Question OT...sorta...can you folks make some song suggestions?

Happy Monday all. Yeah.

I need some song suggestions for my rock band. As some of you may remember, I'm just doing lead vocals. I'm tryting to keep this Bass Forum-appropriate, though, so my song requirements should reflect that. Anyways, I sing pretty high. However, songs that are in our set list like "Any Way You Want It", "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Workin' For The Weekend", "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Girls Girls Girls", and "Nothin' But A Good Time" are taking their toll. As I described to the fellas, those types of songs are like sprinting. I can do it and do it pretty well most of the time, but one can only sprint for so long. "Don't Stop Believin'" pretty much hit my limit. So, I need song ideas. They need to:

-Be mid-range vocally (Lower than the songs that I just mentioned, yet not too low.)
-Be not too gravelly cause I'm a big wuss like that.
-Be "modern" (our set list is chuckabuck full of 80s nonsense, augmented by 70s garbage, and only peppered with 90s because my bandmates feel that the 90s sucked for music. ) So, maybe 2000 and newer?
-Have a nice bass groove and be slightly dancable. That's where the bass comes in.
-Be easily-recognizable to your general bar- or club-goer. Bonus points for sing-a-long-ness.

I've been listening to nothing but The Police, New Wave, Punk Rock, and Joe Strummer for the past several years. So this type of music escapes me. I appreciate any ideas you have.

Fast Life - Freestylers (Here's the You Tube. Killer dance tune. Not the cleanest song, though)
That 70's Song - Cheap Trick (theme to That 70's show. Very recognizable band. Fairly new material.)
World Shut Your Mouth - Death Cab for Cutie (remake of an 80's Julian Cope tune)
Heaven - Los Lonely Boys
Who Says You Can't Go Home - Bon Jovi (ditch the You Give Love a Bad Name. Same reason as the Cheap trick tune and people do sing along to it.)

You serious on the You Give Love A Bad name? We do it pretty well.

Whitesnake? We had been doing "Here I go Again". Musically, they couldn't make it sound good. Not sure how "Still Of The NIght" would go. Probably DOS--dead on suggestion.

The Middle is a good idea. We've batted that one about in practice a couple of times. I think it may be our guitarist that's opposed to it. He's a shredder and I think it troubles him to play simple stuff.

Smooth...argh...makes me want to rip out my earballs. But you're right. Those guys mentioned that one the other day. Matchbox 20 is probably a good idea...that guy's pitch isn't too hard on the pipes. So another good idea.

That is painful. I'm just going to pretend you didn't say that. Same goes for if/when one of my bandmates suggests it. I'll just say, oh, Hinder? Oh, I see, you want to do more Billy Idol. Splendid.

Ideas that I have been kicking around and I'm hoping the guys jump on are...

"Danni California" RHCP
"Wish You Were Here" Incubus

Any thoughts on "Miss Murder" from AFI?

Not modern, but what about "Fascination Street" from The Cure?

That's a great description of "What I Got." And the Rob Thomas stuff is a great suggestion. I had forgotten to post Street Corner Symphony by Rob Thomas in my last post. Here are a couple of other suggestions as I think about it. All of these have been used in TV commercials in the past few years

Better Now - Collective Soul (I think for Kellogg's Special K)
Hollywood - Collective Soul
The Only Way is the Wrong Way - Filter (Hummer)
Get What You Need - Jet (either used for cars or software, I can't remember)

I'm surprised to hear you mention Collective Soul. We had come to the agreement as a band that "Shine" was probably their only cover-able song and we're on the fence about playing that one. I'll search them out when I get home.

We do "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" from Jet already.

As much as I used to hate Machbox 20, I definitely think I'm going to bring that up again. That new(er) tune they have is a bit of a toe-tapper.

I very much appreciate all the suggests! Keep em coming!

"Just Like Heaven" is the Cure song of choice, but that's a cool idea.

And I agree with you about "Smooth", but wait till you see what happens to the chicks when you play it! It is like catnip to hot chicks.

You should also think about "Pour some Sugar on me", as much as I hate that song, for the same reason.

exactly. My band always ends up jamming on that song for about 20 minutes. Good times are had by all

We did just add free for all to our list of covers though. Mainly because the guitard is completely gay for Ted Nugent. I'll admit that the song has grown on me.
Have you thought about any Grand Funk?

Some bands have a rule about covering only one song per band. If your band doesn't, don't drop it. Fascination Street is good, as would be "Why Can't I Be You?" and "Just Like Heaven." Another one that's 80's, but you can hear a fairly current recording of live is How Soon Is Now (The Smiths). Look for the live version under the name of Morrissey. Easy on your pipes. Also a band covered it for the theme track of the TV Show Charmed.

I've been suggesting "Just Like Heaven" for about 2 months now. Seemed like the suggestion went over like a turd in a punch bowl. I mentioned that last week and they were like "Oh, I don't mind doing The Cure, I just don't know any of their songs." How do you not at least know "Friday, I'm In Love"? or "Love Song"? or "Boys Don't Cry"? Sometimes I can't tell if those guys are f*cking with me or not. I mentioned that we should do a Cars tune. They looked at me like I had 3 heads. They claimed to never have heard The Cars. Do you believe that? I mean, there is a bit of an age discrepency, here. I'm 31, the guys are 27, 26, 25, and 23. But how do you not know anything from The Cure or The Cars. Especially when they know tons of 70s stuff and tons of 80s stuff.

"Pour some Sugar" is actually another good idea. The band I subbed in a while back "played" that song. Horrible. Barely recognizable it was so bad. But the crowd still ate it up. I never got that song, but aparently, everyone else did.

ONly thing...still hoping to get "modern" with the suggestions.

My suggestions have been "modern." At least within the past 7 years to very current. Welcome to the Black Parade (My Chemical Romance) is another one that's not hard. Just cut the all music intro.

My modern reminder was mainly poited at Mark. He's got great suggestions, but they were still fairly 80s-focuses. My favorite these days, but like I said, we're trying to balance out the spread.

I mentioned My Chemical Romance. I like some of their stuff. I haven't gotten into their last album, though. I have it but only listened to it once. I'll check it out.

I guess I need to make a CD up of a lot of these suggested tunes and hand them to the guys rather than just making suggestions that get dumb looks and then forgotten about.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hey man! I still play KC and the Sunshine Band on gigs......what do I know from modern???

If you ain't opposed to a slow song or two, "Apologize" by One Republic is kinda nice.....

You might also take a crack at "Crazy B*tch" by Buckcherry

I'm right there with ya, man. I'd be fine just doing 80s stuff, with the occasional late-70s addition. People give the 90s such a hard time for being a crap decade. Why are we having such trouble coming up with good 2000s songs? That's pretty telling, wouldn't you think?

I'll look up "Apologize". According to the fellas, they actually got a little flack for being too "in your face"...rocking "too hard" and not laying back and grooving or swaying a bit. So we definitely need a few more slower songs.

My suggestion for a slower song would be "All These Things That I Have Done", from The Killers. Good tune.

What about Lovecats by the Cure.

It has a cool bassline and most people know it.

Dammit! 1983

Great tune. Where are the good new songs? Where do they hide?
