80 STAGES OF 12AX7 TUBE GAIN BROoTaLitY

Just finished this.
40 12AX7's, 80ma of high voltage, and 12amps of heater current
and you get 80 stages of gain!
My camera is bending the pics a bit, but here you go;

This is actually a preamp tube aging/burn-in rack
I just built for Dougs Tubes.
He'll be offering higher quality 12AX7's from now
on. Putting time on the tubes before you get them
does two things. One, insures you don't get any
premature failures, and two it also burns off
some of the nastyness/trebble associated
with brand new preamp tubes.
An incredible amount of work, 40 sockets, 80 mounting holes,
9 pins each, two resistors each, and all of their connections.
Doug

That is intense! Looks like Doug's Tubes will take another step infront of the competition.

I am surprised the chassis can handle that many sockets too.

Where's the booby knobs? I feel for ya drilling all those holes. I get to spend the week building 34 solid walnut drawers, all with dowels to hold wine bottles, for some Terlato wine disply in NYC scheduled for March. Ugh.

That's overkill even for using to burn in tubes.

Although I can only IMAGINE how much of a BEAST of a metal amp something like that would be... even if it cost $1000 to retube it.

woods not bad. I don't have a press here so it was all hand drill.
I was pretty beat after that.
The last time I built one of these it was a 100 tube unit.
I wish I had pics of that one, it was crazy when it was loaded
with tubes.

Not overkill, the guy I built it for is a tube dealer.
Here's the interesting thing about this unit,
with just a few connection changes, a driver tube,
and an output transformer, you could convert
this one into a 20watt power amp.

Yeah, wonder what 12ax7s sound like in a power tube configuration? I'd imagine not very good but I don't know shit about the "turn the tables" theory.

I know if you were looking for ultima clean headroom, a 6L6 in the pre section would NEVER break up.

20 watts of 12ax7 madness.

No true, a 6L6 used as a preamp tube will distort.
It's been done allready.
There are a few 12AX7 based HiFi power amplifiers
on the market, do a search you'll find them.
I think one even goes as high as 40watts.
Retubes are expensive!!!!
