SPEAKERWAREHOUSE Vintage 30's.. QUESTION

Looking at putting these Speakerwarehouse.com Vintage 30's in my Peavey Classic 50.

Been playing through Greenback 25watt Marshall for 20years and never really played with stuff because I didn't really find a need to.

MY QUESTION IS:

What does the "30" in Vintage 30 stand for? Wattage? Magnet size?

The specs on these vintage 30's show 60 watts each at speakerwarehouse.com

12" Vintage Guitar Speaker
The soft parts of these speakers are from the old original British manufacturer which supplied parts for the original Celestion™ speakers.
Product Specifications

Power Rating 60 watts
12" Paper cone
Treated paper edge
1.75 inch voice coil
50 oz Ceramic magnet
Terminal board
Frequency range 70 - 5000 Hz
Sensitivity 1W/1M (SPL) : 100 dB
Nominal Impedance : 8 or 16 ohm
Mesh dust cap
Resonance frequency, Fs 75 Hz
MADE IN THE U.S.

ONE OTHER THING:

If I was going to replace my speakers, what ohm rating should I get. The current speakers are 16 but there is a jack in the head for 8 or 16ohm

It's not the wattage; they're rated at 60-70 watts. I don't believe it's magnet size either. I think the "30" may be for "30 years" like an anniversary for Celestion's G12 perhaps (just guessing here). They were first released in the mid 1980's if I remember right.

They didn't always label them as "Vintage 30." My 1987 Marshall 2554 combo has the speaker labeled simply as "Vintage G12."

8 or 16 ohm will be fine as long as you connect to the right output. If you have an extension cab, match to that cab's inpedence and halve you amp's ohm output (ex. two 16 ohm speakers, you'd run your amp on 8 ohms).

Also consider a mix of V30 and G12H30 (or Hellatone 60 and 30, respectively). This would be a 60-watt combination and a very balanced one at that.

FROM CELESTION

Vintage 30
The Vintage 30 resulted from Celestion’s early steps to preserve the tonal characteristics of vintage speakers while using contemporary materials and construction techniques.

As the 1970s progressed and guitar amplifiers became more powerful, guitarists began to demand the tone of the Celestion Blue in a speaker that could handle more power. So in the early ’80s, Celestion made pioneering use of Laser Doppler Interferometry to analyse the cone behaviour of an original Celestion Blue. We could then form a precise model of our vintage speaker characteristics and apply it to a speaker design using new materials for greater power handling.

The result was an instant classic. Seemingly twice as loud as anything else at the same power level, the Vintage 30 handles massive overdrive sounds with ease. Tight bass, fat mids and a smooth, harmonically rich top end have made the Vintage 30 an excellent 4 x 12" loudspeaker. Of course, it’s also suitable for any other cab!

Dude. Keep the greenbacks. The warehouse speakers are good but greenbacks are greenbacks.

Hmmm... the warehouse speakers seem really cool, is there any concensus on whether or not they sound as good or better than a real v30?

I'm thinking of giving their CL80s a try in my Marshall 1960A.
