Some more rules:
  • No external effects (chorus, delay, reverb, etc...).
  • Overdub allowed.
  • EQ per channel allowed.
  • Compression per channel allowed.
  • Track normalization welcome.
  • Track length: 1 - 5 minutes
  • You really don't need to cheat - everyone who submits a song is a winner here.

Things to keep in mind:
  • You got no time to do the track? Liar! This contest has no deadline until we collect enough material to start the poll for the best track.
  • So... you are shy and don't want to submit your song because it is not good? Wrong answer. Remember: there are no bad songs, just bad critics. (and we will have no critics here).
  • Be a part of history! Roland JD series are cult status now. There are many people who heard about the legend of this synth, but never actually heard it play. Submit it - for their good.
  • There are no winners and losers here. Have you ever seen an old-timer race? Everyone who participates is a winner. You are a winner.
  • So, You would submit your track but got no inspiration at the moment? No problem. Take white noise, use resonance and apply s/h LFO to modulate the cutoff, use phaser -> delay, heavy chorus and largest reverb all in series. Hold a note for 60 seconds - track done. See? It wasn't that hard.
  • Don't be lazy; submit your track, song, audio experiment, noise, anything.
  • You can do it for fun, experiment, rivaling, or simply to praise this wonderful Roland synthesizer.

How to submit a song
If you have a webspace this is pretty easy. Create a temporary directory, put an mp3 into it, and submit its URL. If you have a myspace.com (or similar ) account place, submit URL to the page with mp3, and that's it.
If you don't have any of above, then follow this procedure:
  • If you own Internet Explorer, or some other web browser that supports FTP, just click this link: ftp://jdcontest.awakeaudio.com and use Username: jdcontest Password: jdcontest
  • Go into "jdcontest.awakeaudio.com" folder, then into "upload" folder and create a new folder (right click) with your Harmony Central username.
  • Upload your file into your folder.
  • Your folder will appear on http://jdcontest.awakeaudio.com/upload/
  • Go into your folder and copy URL of your mp3, and place it here.
  • If your web browser doesn't support FTP, then download any FTP client of choice. SmartFTP is free and works great: http://www.smartftp.com/
  • Address: haven.dreamhost.com Username: jdcontest Password: jdcontest
If you don't want to mess with FTP, then use http://www.rapidshare.com/ - this should work 100%.

I´m on.
How long can be the music? 6.36 minutes is ok?

Or can I apply some of my previous recorded music?

By other side, I guess is better to do a new music. That a comment about 60 second one note only is interesting, I can try to do a BIG Tzóóóóóingggg...

The end date is...?

Ill volunteer to host all the Mp3's if need be, Ive got plenty of space/bandwidth on my webserver.

Also - if we're going to use percussion in our track can we design the sound on the JD, then sample it and load it into a drum sampler like Battery? As long as no external effects/filtering is used?

Sure you can! Because technically, we do the same thing with overdub. We "sample it" and then "play it". But you will loose that charming oscilation that is present due to low DSP power. For example: JD will not kick same drum sound exactly the same way - specially if you applied envelopes to it.

Ok I will list names of people i know here that have a JD:

Sealed
Dxdreamer
Clusterchord
Mook
G-bus
Flat Earth
Paolo Di Nicolantonio
idiotboy
Don Solaris
gilbertopb
Awake77
aeon
EJ2
burster1
Karma1

i expect them to submit.
Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't let you do it even if you put tape over the logo and the letters .

Just start a Triton (Le) competition, see how many bite .

Mp3???

Why not raw .WAV files? The JD´s are sUperB machines, so is a crazy thing create an massive 86 patches layered art piece to reduce it to 56kbps...

Ok, ok, I can think about 192kbps, or even 128Kbps, as most sites like Myspace and Soundclick uses.

Awake says he has a webserver, don't know if we can FTP to it though.

Otherwise, can we piggy onto whatever server the "monthly mission" folks use?

Indeed I do, Ill be happy to donate ~100Mb for the contest! I dont have anonymous FTP setup, but I can provide a FTP account just for the contest. Everyone just uses their FTP client of choice and the same username/password.

Let me know if you guys need it, and Ill set it up.

I will try to see if I can get the time to dedicate to my JD-990. So count me in on this one.

It will be a good reason to test out PTLE on my Intelmac and mbox till I decide what I want to do for a good solid new daw system (that I can afford).
