Mystery Tubes! (NOS and NP pre tube comparison)

4 clips. For each clip there is a different tube in v1. For all 4 clips the rest of the tubes are the same. v2 has RFT 12ax7, v3 has JJ ecc83s, and the power tubes are GT EL34M.

In no particular order the v1 tubes are Sovtek 12ax7wa, Electro Harmonix 12ax7EH, Mullard 12ax7a/7025, and RFT 12ax7. Your task is to determine which tube corresponds with each clips and decide which one you like the best. Figuring out the sovtek I think is by far the easiest. The rest are pretty tough IMO.

Clip 1: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8318555

Clip 2: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8318554

Clip 3: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8318553

Clip 4: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8318552

Purpose is to show how the v1 spot really affects your crunch tone. I was a little surprised by what the results.

No way am I going to risk guessing which tube is which, but I would rank them as follows (favourite first):

4,1,3,2.

I can hear that there are subtle differences, but none of them really make enough of a difference to me to spend the extra cash. The only difference that I felt was significant enough to comment on was that #4 was substantially quieter than the other 3...so Sovtek?

Great tones, though. Playing a set with any one of those in my preamp certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Keep in mind that the only tube changing is the v1 tube... this position is the initial tone driver.. doesn't affect the gain too much.. I'll make a comparison later on just switching the tubes in v2. My guess is you'll really hear the differences in crunch and dynamics with that one.

Given what you can figure out from the previous posts you had a 50/50 chance of getting this right (if you're smart). You got it wrong.
