Same, it seems to be more costly to go from here to somewhere South of London, than here to Newark... which is strange... but, yeah, certainly keep it north of London.

Right - update on this - I think the two most commonly accepted options were those of:

Ancient Mariner and
Les Paul Love - ie. Lincoln.

I don't mind either way.

Right then, I'm gonna look into function rooms possibilities in the various areas.
Help from you UK people much appreciated. If you do know of an outstanding venue that is easily accessible by road & trains, and has enough B & B around to meet our needs, do propose them.

At the end of the day, most of us are gonna have to travel quite a way by the sound of it, only a lucky few will be close by.

- lincoln (I know of a pub that has a dedicated "concert room" with PA. Perhaps they'd consider renting day time if there's no band in the evening)
- newark
- nottingham
- birmingham?

Some pubs are very often only too happy to let you have their function room free of charge, knowing that it'll bring them extra revenue anyway.
Some pub even have a function room in which you can be extra noisy without bothering anybody.

We might want to consider partners too - if we have to stay away overnight somwhere, they might want to come along? Or am I pushing too far there?

Thanks for this! I think any of those cities is a good option. It might not even be necessary to do B and B if you have a partner or friend who can drive, and is happy to look around a town for the day or part of the day. Should we also (or even first) fix a weekend/date? Saturday or Sunday would be fine for me. I don't mind too much when, but probably can't do before December. We might have to do it after xmas, in terms of getting everyone on board?

Yeah, date wise, I think we're probably looking at february/march to give everybody plenty of warning.

I think that once we'll have decided on a geographical area in which to organise the meeting, finding a venue sholdn't be too difficult.

I was reading ancient mariner's venue, it does look pretty cool - drum kit & PA already there, that'd be handy. A shame about the remoteness.

If most people are south based, perhaps ancient mariner's venue isn't such a bad idea after all, although is it far from networks?

The main thing to remember Ant, is that England is smaller and poxier than France! So any distance ought to be more or less manageable, especially if those with cars are willing to pick others up from railway stations etc. I am willing to do that, if it easier, say, for someone to get to Leeds station, or somewhere there abouts.

So how come you are on this island? You seem to have adopted it.

Oh.... Long story!!!
Came around to learn english - then met that english lady that can sleep all morning long.... that was more than 10 years ago!
Still together, and been in england over 11 years instead of the planned 1 year!!!!

You never know what life has in store for you, that's the only certainty.

I’ve met a forumite (in Lincoln) and jammed with him the 2nd time we met - pascal, he who lives in abu dhabi. It was very good! It’s nice to meet musically & gear minded people, who understand why the thought of slowly caressing your guitar and hugging it every now and again ISN’T odd but a normal thing to do.

It was cool.

I can't remember any discussion involving hugging ang caressing one's instrument, though... Could it be the Cognac?

Nice project you have here, lads. Please let me know when/where this happens, in case I happen to be around. Although I don't live in the UK anymore, I still end up in Lincolnshire regularly.

Aha! I thought as much, you old dog you! Does she speak French? My wife is Romanian origin (Brit citizen now) - I taught out there, did vol work years and years ago (1992), so I have part of my life in another European country too... and it is a handy language to get away with gossip without people knowing what you are saying!

Birmingham and Nottingham are both easy for me. Newark more tricky if it's a Sunday, but fine on a Saturday. London also easy.

I'd be hoping to do a day trip, though I don't mind returning very late.

She speaks a little french, but not enough to slag people off in front of them without them knowing. I'm sure it's something we can work on!!!!!!

Been looking at rooms in places, got to say I find it difficult to find something like what we'd want.
Anybody with local knowledge of brum & nottingham wants to investigate location possibilities?

Eh, eh I learnt yesterday that some of our friends are moving to bicester very soon.....

Just bumping this up. I don't think it really matters all that much how good the location is, as long as there are some decent pubs nearby. I think we're being far too precious about it. Also, I don't see the actual playing of guitars is a perfectly suited location as the most important thing - after all, ten guitarists don't necessarily make up an entirely fruitful/useful musical exchange (although I assume some can sing and bass). In some ways, someone's place might be the best. I would be willing to offer, but we don't have a very big house and I think Harrogate is a long way for people to come. Is rakester still up on the offer? West Midlands...

So, are you going to join us CSM, if we eventually work out what we are doing? Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's a bit tricky knowing what to set up when you have never met most of the people on the forum, but I have been wondering about the possibility of doing it for about a year.

I met up with a guy from another forum in Glasgow during the summer... we were a little concerned that it might be awkward but it wasn't at all... we sat in the pub for 4 hours and didn't run out of things to talk about.

I'm not massively active on this forum but I'd be interested in meeting up, whether for a few beers or a jam and overnight stay. I'd be coming from Plymouth...

Right guys, i have a possible venue in Lincoln at the duke wellington.

Sunday afternoons only though - they need the saturday afternoons for evening to set up. They said we could be loud, but couldn't get the damn man to tell if they'd charge for it. Funny, if you ask "would there be a charge or are you happy with beer money being spent" 3 times, you'd think they'd try to give you some sort of answer?

Can sombody try to find a venue in nottingham or birmingham?
