I'm sure everything your wrote was valid but if I want to study statistics again I'll go to grad school. If you want to provide evidence disproving my theory I'm ready to listen.

It's really not very complicated. It just tends to be pessimistic (in terms of how much info you actually can distill from data) and that can get frustrating for folks, so there can be a temptation to cowboy the process In that way it's a lot like Clever Hans Quote:
Or if you want to use statistical support, then yeah - it might be good to take a refresher course or two ain't nothin wrong with that It's not unlike "If I wanted to play guitar, I'd go study guitar" - hey if you want to play English horn I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to use a guitar... If you want to provide evidence disproving my theory I'm ready to listen. This is an important point - and one that often gets misunderstood (you may remember this from your experiment design stuff) Nullification and contradiction aren't the same My analysis forwarded was nullification (ie we have NOT provided valid grounds for the assert) What you are asking for is contradiction (ie demonstration that the opposite of the assertion is valid as an assertion) However, since the assertion the band identity needs to be clear and that means one singer, one lead guitarist, one bassist, and one drummer. is based on an an absolute ("needs" , a requirement) We have a relatively simple task as we can use disproof by negation (you may know it as disproof of a universal through demonstration of an existential) if something is asserted as required and we can show an example that exists without that requirement -- then we have a contradiction more explanation is avail if needed - but it's pretty classic. A) Assertion : All dogs have 2 eyes 2) Given : Bob is a Dog 3) Given : Bob has one eye 4) by A[3] : Bob is NOT a dog CONTRADICTION 2 : 4 and in the thread bands that have been listed with >1 singer( etc) that do not follow the 1 singer (etc) requirement. QED We may consider it a popular practice, we may consider it wise (or not and it may not even be universal) to follow -- that's different than required Last edited by slight-return : 11-04-2009 at 05:36 PM. |
