1994 PRS CE 22 - Neck refinish - Harmony Central Musician Community Forums

I bought a '94 CE 22 body is in perfect condition. The guy sanded the clear coat off because of his playing style. I paid a realllyy low price for it, so i wasn't about to complain.

Any idea what the best type of clear coat to use? I'm a little new to dealing with paint.

so I feel a little qualified to get back to you.

Sorry about the blatant self-promotion.
My self-esteem needs building here after so many insults today.

So here's my big recommendation.
Chances are you'll be using spray cans, and you should try Krylon.
That's the best product in a spray can as far as I'm experienced.
How experienced do you want to get?

Before you start over-spraying everything around you,
what's wrong with the neck being sanded down?
That's what I do even with guitars I build myself.
You say playing style, I say faster action.
I don't need a beat up guitar to make me look like I'm playing it,
but I certainly want to be able to move my hand around,
especially moving big barre chords up and down the neck.
Too much laquer on your neck is like singing too loud.
Sooner or later the build-up is going to wear you down,
not the other way around.

I would suggest Tru Oil gunstock finish or tung oil. It's difficult to mess up those finishes.

I'd go with the original Nitrocellulose laquer finish or some form or laquer.

Minwax sells nitrocellulose laq in spray cans that would work well. Easily found at Home Depot or Lowes, and with careful application on a well-masked guitar, the results will be damn near as good as nitro shot from a HVLP gun.

Good product and good choice for this app. However it is an acrylic. IIRC the difference is in the type of binder used. Still laquer with about the same properties as nitro. Don't get your panties in a knot people I said about. It is a bit different but not much.

I emailed them and they said it was nitro

The Minwax is nitrocellulose lacquer. For sure. They do make polyurethane and acrylic, but this stuff is nitro.

I have been keeping my eyes open for an older PRS to just have around... If you don't mind revealing how much did you drop on this guy.. I like to get an idea of what they are going for in different places. Kinda make an overall average of everything.
