Can you please give some advice on how to build own sounds, especially those atmospheric pads, on the jd-990 for beginners like me? I have basic knowledge of synthesis but when I hear some of those fascinating patches (like in the contest-demos) I feel completely overstrained and tend to resign and use presets only .

And: is an external (software) editor recommended for the jd-990 or does editing via display make sense in the long run?

Regards!

Editing via the display isn't that hard. It's very well laid out, so you will get use to it. and eventually editing will be at the tip of your fingers without even thinking about it.

If you want to build you own sounds, first find some good existing patches and work with them. Alter them into your own creation. (Change waveforms ect...).

Here's my little contribution to the contest, made without any external fx (just normalized). These are my very first steps with this complex machine

It's all recorded at the same time in performance-mode, I used the internal Eq and "mixer".

It's the 808-kick-wave (No 159), pitch-env at maximum from highest (+50) to lowest point (-50) and very short T1 (7). Then tuned up (+38).

Thank you Now you give me tips for making incredible "Don Solaris-Style"-pads?

Welcome to the kick club! I remember when i made that kick first time in 1994. We could not afford samplers so the pitch envelope over 808kick on Roland JV-90 was the only solution to have the megapopular 909 style kick. You'd not beleve the stuff we pulled out of JV in multi timbral. Later the Super JV 1080 came out with the better cpu, so there was no more of that funny "skipping" of the kick drum.

But i like to see you guys pulling max out of a single instrument. That's the way to learn synths.

You got no time to do the track? Liar! This contest has no deadline until we collect enough material to start the poll for the best track.
I'm in. Tomorrow I'll start saving money for a JD synth

Where in Calif. are you located? I'm in the Bay area and am thinking of selling my mint JD800. However, I'm not into shipping it.

I'm down in Orange County, Karma. Thanks, though! I was kinda leaning towards a 990 anyway, I don't have room for another keyboard.

OK I'll bite...

I've got a JD-800 at home and plan on getting a 990 to go along with it soon. I've got to clean the key contacts on the 800 because some of the keys don't work right. But I plan to contribute to this competition by the end of May!

Question For Don:

Greetings Don,

How are you generating the wide stereo image?

I've got a JD-800 and do not think it can stereo pan the four tones. Does the JD-990 have stereo panning for each tone?

Yes.

And many other things. (btw this article needs update. I forgot to list another thing that JD-990 has and JD-800 doesn't. The modulation is not fixed to one LFO per parameter. On JD-990 you can use two different LFO's for the same destination - i.e. pitch, filter, tva)

JD-800 can't do 30% of what JD-990 can.

From experience, i found the rubber dome mech to be the culprit for dead keys on JD800. (they can split)

You can pick them up at: http://www.vintageplanet.nl/

Also i posted this thread which might be of interest:

Thanks for your help. I think all keys pretty much make a sound. It's just that the velocity is -way- off on two or three keys. The rest work perfect. Love this this synth BTW. It just has the most unique and musical patches. I've got my expression pedal routed to aftertouch, which is really great for changing the sounds in real time.

Don - I just got the 990 and I bought a used vintage board. I cannot get the system to recognize the vintage board. The boot screen says "Expanded" like it should but no love. I cannot get it to load the sounds...when I go into utility to load it just says "card not ready"....I think I seated it firmly..altho the tool was not provided. Any suggestions? - Sam In Santa Cruz
