Well, you've got the right idea. The mixer is the piece of equiptment that most people place inbetween their turntables. On the mixer the main controls are :

1) A crossfader
2) Channel faders
3) Master volume controls
4) headphone output controls

The crossfader determines which record is being heard. If you slide it all the way towards channel A you will hear only channel A. If you slide it all the way towards channel B you will heard only channel B. And if you put it in the middle you will hear both.

The Channel faders act as volume contols for each turntable or channel. If you leave the crossfader in the middle you can set the volume of each channel independently with the channel faders.

The master volume controls are pretty self explanitory.

The headphone output controls can be as simple as a volume knob and as complex as a miniture mixer for the headphones.

Of course, this is the simplest mixer design, with no EQ's or FX loops to deal with, but this should get you going. If this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to help you out some more. Also I will try and find a link to a site that may help you.

Peace.

Just as a footnote, I checked out www.pssl.com and their prices are a lot higher than what I have seen at 123dj.com. I would recommend checking out the latter for cheap mixers. A Vestax PCV-175 is a good starting mixer. They are charging 400 at pssl.com, and 320 at 123dj.com

You may be able to find a lower price, but Pro Sound is the best DJ gear company I've dealt with. They have great service, excellent packing and shipping, and if you do find a lower price within 45 days they'll beat it. Here's a link to the details about there policies.

Sorry to make this sound like an infomercial, but it's true.
