I finally got the Portishead Live in NYC DVD, and all I can say is WOW! Great scratching, and great synth work!

Watching the DJ, I was wondering, are there special record you buy solely for scratching?

Yep, tons and tons and tons. Go to:
www.turntablelab.com for loads of info
My current favourite's Dirtstyles/Sealed Breaks, shitloads of anti-skip beats (ie samples are positioned on the record so that if you skip, yuo remain in time, ie snare skips to snare, bass skips to bass etc etc) for drumming and a nice long 'beep-ahh-fresh' section with loops on t'other side. Drummings all I can do, but I can do it very well indeed.
There are better records out for general purpose scratching though. D-Styles' break records seem to be pretty good, and Focus has some good records for practising amongst other things.

Does anyone know what kind of mixer Andy Smith was using? It seemed like he didn't use the crossfader much and instead used buttons to cut the sound.......
