There is a difference. Haze machines are generally comparible to the 'must have' cracked oil machines but cheaper. I think someone worked out (Le Maitre possibly) how to make a smoke machine behave like a cracked oil machine.
Hazers are supposed to leave a haze of smoke in a room that takes longer to desperse than standard smoke machines. If you want a proper haze effect from a lighting point of view, then a cracked oil machine is the best. Smoke machines are good for sudden smoke clouds that clear often too quickly. Haze is a more subtle and long term effect.
Most musicians don't like smoke. Hardly any complain about a cracked oil machine...

Just light stuff on fire. That'll give you plenty of smoke.

the haze machines can help bring out the best impact in your lighting show tremendously,, especially if you utilize scanners or other intelligent lighting....
the fog machine is more of a one trick pony,, used as a special effect once in a while........
