Ok,
seems like this forum needs a little juice.
So tell me what your ulitimate rack would look like, disregarding your wallet.....
for a start, here's mine:
Engl 580 midi preamp
CAE 3+ se preamp
Marshall Plexi head (modded by Bradshaw)
VHT poweramps (3 for tri channel)
TC Gforce
TC triple C
Lexicon PCM 91
TC 2290 delay
Tri strereo chorus
Korg Rack tuners and Furman conditioners
2 x CAE 4x4 looper (or Mario's Axess stuff)
Sennheissr digital wireless
Cry Baby Rack Wah
Eventide H3000/or the orville
Black Cat voodoo vibe
3 Bogner 4x12 cabs (Vintage)
AAAAAhhh mann that would be cool....
What's your dream rack?
El Grinder

Start with an SKB Shock mount rack case.
Toss a Furman voltage regulator/power conditioner up top.
Add a Mesa/Boogie Triaxis preamp and Coliseum 300 power amp loaded with your choice of EL34 or 6L6 tubes.
For post-gain effects, take your choice of a T.C. Electronics 2290 Dynamic Delay or an Eventide DSP7000 Ultra-Harmonizer with the sampling upgrade.
If a gate is needed, toss in a Rocktron Guitar Silencer.
Put either a Teese RMC-3 wah in front of the rack or a Dunlop Crybaby Rackmount into the rack.
That leaves only the Peterson strobe tuner to add.
You might want to finish it off with Monster Studio Pro 1000 instrument, patch and speaker cables.
That's my idea of a primo rack.

Why would you need the BBE sonic maximizer?
Why would you need an Orville? Those things are 4 channels in, 4 channels out.
Why would you need two Strategy 500s?!!!! I have one and have never gotten both channels over 4 at once.

For those of you that were saying you wanted a Strategy 500, there's one on eBay for 700 bucks with a reserve price of 800. (No, it's not mine. Mine isn't going anywhere *grin*)
Ok, so where was I on my ultimate rack rant.
I wouldn't mind upgrading my Eventide GTR4000 Ultra-Harmonizer to a DSP7000 Ultra-Harmonizer and adding the GTR II preset library.
I really should add a Rocktron Guitar Silencer after the Triaxis to cut out some of the noise on the highest-gain patches. A Keeley compressor between the Triaxis and the Silencer would be cool though, just to add some sustain.
I'd love to try out a Mesa/Boogie Coliseum 300 to see how it fares vs. the Strategy 500. It'd be nice having the Deep and Half-Drive independently controllable along with adding the Modern function. Oh yeah, and the Coliseum 300 can use EL34s or 6L6s, so it'd be fun to experiment with even more different tubes.

does the strategy 500 really leave you wondering if there is something better??
A strategy 500 is really rare but a colessium 300!
thats almost unheard of..
It would be cool to see if there are any differences though..
El Grinder

The Simul 2:Ninety and Coliseum 300 were the generation of power amps after the Simul 395 and Strategy 500, which were, in turn, descendents of the Simul 295 and Strategy 400.
Both the 395 and Strategy have Switch Track. Both sides of the amp have two "tracks". Each track has its own Deep, Half Drive, Volume and Presence controls.
The 2:Ninety and Coliseum 300 have Smart Power. With Smart Power, the Deep and Half Drive are independently controllable. Plus, you get the Modern function added.
With the Strategy 500, you can't switch straight from a Deep sound to a Half Drive sound, with the Coliseum 300, you can. Plus, you can try EL34s in the Coliseum 300.
Pretty much everyone says that the Strategy 500 is about the best tube power amp you can get (except maybe some VHT models), but I'd really love to try the Coliseum 300 out.

OK, here's my idea of a good rack. Whether or not I'll get to build it is another story:
Rocktron All-Access MIDI controller w/ 4 continuous-control pedals
Custom guitar
1. Bridge EMG output
2. Neck EMG output
3. Piezo output
4. 13-pin hex output to fanout box
Fanout box connects w/ VG-88 and midi EZBus digital mixer. EZbus outputs to switcher.
All 4 outputs go to Switchblade-16 switcher via Sennheiser digital wireless units (and a custom digital wireless for the 13-pin)
4-channel Orville in Switchblade matrix
Dunlop Rack Wah in matrix
Preamps in matrix:
Engl 580
Folkesson-modded JMP-1
Soldano X-99
Ernst Rover
Triaxis
Access
Switchblade outputs 4 signals to Tascam DM-24 digital mixer tied to Apogee D/A converters:
Mixer outputs to rack power amps and heads:
Marshall Jubilee 2550 (via re-amp box or FX loop)
Roccaforte 40 (via re-amp box)
AC30 vintage head (re-amp)
Dr. Z Route 66 (re-amp)
Dr. Z 6545 head (re-amp)
H&K Triamp (re-amp or FX loop)
Diezel (stereo version) (re-amp or FX loop)
Fender Bassman vintage head (re-amp)
THD Bivalve (re-amp or FX loop)
Bogner Ecstasy Classic (re-amp or FX loop)
Marhshall Plexi 50W RI (re-amp)
Rivera Knucklhead (re-amp)
Top Hat King Royale (re-amp)
VHT 2:90:2 (KT-88)
Marshall 20/20 (EL-84)
Marshall 50/50 (EL-34)
Mesa 50/50 (6L6)
Ernst Traveller (re-amp?; EL-34)
Note: most of the heads and rack amps will be channel switched via a SoundSculpture Footsim, and custom fitted w/ MIDI-controllable/programmable motorized knobs.
All of these power amps will be switched (w/ five 4-input CAE amp switchers) between 5 custom cabs, each which are fitted with the following mix of speakers: a Jensen 15" vintage, a Celestion V30, a vintage soloist, a greenback, a vintage blue alnico speaker, and 2 vintage 10" Celestions. Each speaker can be connected/disconnected from the cab load via a SoundSculpture Footsim signal.
These cabs are all put into isolation boxes, and each individual speaker is miced with an Earthworks SR (ultra-flat response) mics.
The mics all run into another Tascam DM-24. The modeling amps (VG-88, Vetta head, Zentera head, and Cybertwin head) can be patched in at this point also. Then time-based FX are added in the effects loops:
Another Eventide Orville
Lexicon 960L
T.C. digital delay
Sony Sampling Reverb
All of the signals are mixed down to a single stereo pair, and are outputed to the tracking room or live concert mixer. During live performances, the live mixer can output to tape as well as to a pair of Mackie SRM450 powered full-range monitors (300W+100W Solid State), or to a wireless earphone set, if the occassion should call for it.

As outlandish as that setup may seem, it should be noted that many of the features in that setup will be incorporated into my REAL, steadily-expanding rig. Here is probably what it will more realistically end up looking like:
1. Custom guitar (yes, w/ 3 outputs + 13-pin output)
2. RMC fanout box and VG-88
3. SoundSculpture Switchblade-16 GL controlled by All Access
4. Engl580+ Ernst Rover + Dunlop rack wah + Orville in the Switchblade matrix
5. outputs to 4-5 rack power amps or heads controlled by Footsim. Heads can be re-amped into.
6. amps will switch into a stereo pair of custom (buddy-made :) ) cabinets with a mix of vintage 12" and 15" speakers.
7. amps housed in home-made iso boxes and miced. Mic lines go to Tascam DM-24 (from home studio) digital mixer. FX loop also can be routed to Switchblade to add time-based effects from any open Orville channels.
8. Signals mixed to stereo and sent to tracking room, FOH, FOH recorder, and/or a pair of Mackie SRM 450s (400W total, Solid State) monitors.
That's more realistic. But YES, its still ambitious.

Dream equipment loaded in one 8u SKB shock mount rack case.
Furman AR-1215
Eventide DSP7000
Mesa/Boogie Triaxis
Mesa/Boogie Coliseum 300
That's all.
The Furman protects against, spikes, surges, voltage changes and EMI/RFI interference. It also keeps the voltage stable to keep the Mesa units keeping a stable sound dispite the house power supply voltage.
The Eventide DSP7000 would handle all of the post-gain dynamics and time-based effects. I'd probably have both the GTR4000 and GTR II preset libraries loaded on it along with the 172 second internal sampling card.
The Triaxis would ideally be a version 2.0 with the phat mod. It would be loaded with either Telefunken ECC803s gold pin preamp tubes or Telefunken ECC83 smooth plate preamp tubes.
The Coliseum 300 would have the Deep, Modern and Half-Drive modes controlled by the Triaxis and would be loaded with Svetlana 6L6GC power tubes.
Of course I'd be running a custom B.C. Rich koa neck-thru Warlock with MasterTone pickups in front of the rack and Mesa/Boogie Rectifier Traditional cabinets loaded with Celestion Classic Lead 80 speakers behind it. :)

lol WOW, this is an OLD thread...
But, what the heck, it's still valid.
I think my dream rig would be pretty much what I have now... Neck Thru Warlock -> Triaxis -> GTR4000 -> Strategy 500 -> Celestion loaded cab.
-I wouldn't mind maybe changing out the stock pickups for some MasterTone pickups.
-I've thought about adding a Dunlop Crybaby Q-zone in front of the Triaxis.
-I might even get a smaller poweramp (either 20/20 or 2:Ninety).
-I probably will upgrade my MIDI controller soon.
But overall, I think I've got what I want out of my rig.

YES!
This IS an OLD THREAD.
:)
I still maintain that for me, a Mesa Quad or Triaxis does the trick for being my preamp, anything with Mark II and III sounds, a Furman voltage regulator handles the juice, Eventide handles the effects (what's the current "godly" one, the H8000?) and for raw power a Mesa 2:Ninety, Strategy 500 or Coliseum 300 would all work fine for me (preferably with GE 6L6GC tubes).
Of course my speakers would have to be the Celestion G12H-80's that I'm always babbling about too...

Wow, Tuv, that's pretty stripped down & simple...
Of course I can't think of an acoustic setup (for myself) much better than an Alvarez-Yairi steel string acoustic strung with Martin M140 phosphor bronze strings and a Dunlop "stubby" 3 mm pick (optional).

Lol.....yes this is an old thread...........
El Grinder, have you getten to try the coloseum 300 yet?
El Grinder
11-13-2003, 03:01 PM
Nope, but as my understanding goes, it's pretty much the 2:Ninety with larger transformers and another pair of tubes on each channel. So, a slightly beefier sound with higher headroom.
Pretty much it's the same as the Strategy 500 with the "modern" function added. Of course the Coliseum 300 can also be switched to EL34 tubes. I've rather grown on the 6L6 and 6550 sound though.

If it's going to be the ultimate rack system, I wouldn't settle for anything tc electronics or furman, I don't care who is using them. There are far better effects processors (eventide duly noted) and power supplies (line conditioner, v-reg, etc). Get your cases from A&S Case Co., toughest shit ever.
I'm actually selling my 12-space ATA shockmount because I found out I need a 16-space instead, sucks. They sell for about $600 new (my 12-space) and I've had it for a couple weeks, brand new, PM if interested. Personal plug, yes I'm guilty. ;)
Good luck with that "ultimate rack" setup. P.S. - If it's the ultimate "rack," I don't think you want heads in the mix, right? Even though I have a 2-head roadcase in my setup... take care.

Hey Lord!
My ENGL 580 is doin fine though i didn´t tweaked it to much.
What can i say?
You can get all sounds out of it.(just ask Morris)!:D
It would be interesting to compare it side by side with your SAVAGE SE.
Man what would i give for this Thing.
Lord did i mentione if i don´t like the JMP1 i will swap it out and grab a Triaxis!!:D :D :D
Then i´m really a Psycho!;) :D
BTW how do you like your SAVAGE SE?How does it compare to the SAVAGE 120?

Mario,
I don't own the new SE, it's the 'older' model Savage SE. That being said, it sounds killer and if I compare with the Savage120 I must say the Savage SE sounds smoother, more chime. I love them both a lot!

Folkesson-modded JMP-1>
Hey, can anyone tell me more about Folkesson's JMP-1 mod? I went to his web site:
http://home.swipnet.se/folkesson/priser.htm
...but it's all in Swedish so I'm not sure what the mod actually does. Any JMP-1 users out there who have had theirs modded?

Wow! a trip to the past....
Can't remember if this was the rig I wanted, so here I go:
Lexicon mpxg2
Soundsculpture switchblade
peterson tuner
roland midi system
roland synth
wireless system
furman power conditioner
pro co rat
z vex fuzz probe

At the moment my ideal rig would be...
Preamp: Mesa Quad
Amp: Laney TT50H
Cab: Pair of 4x12 Bogner Uberkabs
Effects: Marshall BB-2
Marshall EV-1
Echo Pro
Mod Pro
Misc.: Axess GRX-4
MIDI controller for the Quad
and whatever system to run the Echo and Mod Pros.
I'd use the GRX-4 so I can hook up the Laney's preamp section and the Quad preamp so that both go into the Laney's power section and I can switch between the preamp I want. Then it's a case of hooking up the effects (the two pedals can go in the GRX-4).
It's a pretty simple rig and I would have a 4U effects rack, then a 4U rack with the Quad (and possibly a Mesa 20/20 for smaller jams and a backup) and ideally a nice roadcase for the Laney head.
The great thing is it's not too far out of reach as I have the Mesa Quad and 20/20, the Marshall BB-2 and a Laney head (just not the right one! ;)).

A few years ago I had what I thought could match anybody's and in less space than most! Here it was in 1995:
1984 Gibson Les Paul Standard (Honeyburst)
1994 SRV Stratocaster
Martin HD35 Acoustic
Vox Wah
TC Electronic BLD Distortion
Roger Mayer Rocket FX Fuzz Pedal
H &K Access Midi Controllable Preamp (drives everything else)
Rockman midi Octopus/
Rockman Compressor/Marshall 9001 Preamp (In Amp loop on Access)
TC 2290 Delay (Series Loop AB on Access)
Lexicon LXP1 Reverb (In loop C)
H & K Access 250 Power Amp (switches driven from Access)
Mesa Midi Matrix and Abacus pedal board)
Two ADA 2-12 Cabinets performing in stereo
I still think this rig is awesome. Two amps, TC delay, midi controlled, EL84 distortion at 25 watts a side wide up, Bedroom or Live!
Today I am trying to replace the 2290 and LXP1 with MPX G2 and so far it is a disaster programming-wise.
I guess the real problem here also is that I do not have a direct guitar to amp path like some rigs do.

I did this today. It's not totally figured out yet but here's the gear:
Mesa Quad (channel switching w/ switcher *see below*)
Mesa Triaxis
Mesa Rackmount Recto
**Marshall JMP-1
**Marshall El34 Power amp
2x - Mesa 2:90
2x - *Those Switchblade units with all the fancy switching thingies
3x - Roland SDE-1000
Eventide H3000
MXR Blureface Flanger/Doubler
T.C. G-Major
Lexicon Reverb of some sort
Korg Tuner
Crybaby Rack Wah
Axess switcher thing to switch channels on the Recto
**4x - Marshall 4x12
3x - Mesa Recto 4x12 (one per amp)
3x - Mesa Recto 2x12 (one per amp)
9x - Mesa Recto 2x12 Wedge (3 per amp, to be used as monitors for everyone in the band :D ; I know they're out of production but this is my dream rig right?)
**The Marshall rig will go with the Marshall cabs, the other cabs all go to the Mesa amps. When I say "one per amp" I only mean the Mesa Amps.
All controlled by a CAE RS-10 with the 2 extensions.
Some of it is probably a bit redundant but I think it would be fun to have.

how do you like those Rivera TBR's?
I used to have an original TBR1 (before the SL/M differential) and a TBR2SL.....LOVED THEM....

I love the TBR's, they are great sounding, I really like the low power settings with it in triode mode, sweet smooth tone, yet with the balls of authority behind it. Great stuff, Rivera is highly underappreciated IMHO.
