O.K. As a bunch of you know I am doing a shootout of basically equivalent amplifiers by different manufacturers in search of the ultimate amp hear. I'm starting on the middle to low end and working my way up to more expensive gear as I go. This way I can demo several less expensive amps at once and narrow the field more quickly.
I have played on these amps at home (except the one that showed up 5 minutes before rehearsal) and decided to take them to rehearsal to see how well they sit in a live mix situation with a full band. To me that is the true test of the amp.
All of these amps were tested using the same 3 basses (Sentinel 5XL, Mike Lull Vintage Jazz 4 & MTD Kingston fretless 5) and the same cabs (Eden D-210XLT & Eden D-115T) to make the most accurate comparison. This will be the case for all of the tests.
All of the amps are also in the 400-500W range for power.
The first 4 amplifiers are as follows: Yorkville 400B, Euphonic Audio iAMP 500, Genz Benz GBE-500H, and Ampeg SVT-IIIPRO.
Here's a shot of them all in the rack and on the cabs....very purdy

I'll list them in the order I bought them.

Yorkville 400B:
Really nice little amp. Paid a couple hundred bucks for it a few months ago for a back up head and for jamming in the basement and I was shocked at how good it was for the $$$$.
Features: 7 The front panel is very simple. Has a gain knob, a Volume knob and a 10-band Graphic EQ. There is no parametric or semi-parametric on this amp. All the EQ is in the Graphic. It has High and low gain inputs for active/passive and en effects loop send and return for a parallel effects loop on the front as well. line out as well. It also has a footswitch jack for the graphic EQ and contour (slap contour) functions. There are also buttons for the Graphic EQ in/out, Contour, and Limiter. The rear panel also has a series effects loop that is a tip/ring config which is good for a rackmount compressor, etc...and a balanced 1/4" line out. Lots of good stuff for an inexpensive amp.
Sound: 6 Pretty darn good. Very uncolored and clear, though not piano-like. Basically gives you a good representation of the sound of your bass. The contour is pretty good but a little bass-heavy for my tastes. The graphic EQ is effective but I still prefer even a 3 band semi-parametric to only a graphic. If you want 2 different sounds out of this amp and have it footswitchable, then it's what you have on the EQ and then just flat.
Overall Quality: 5: It's a pretty well made amp, but the pots are very scratchy and feel a little cheap. I have heard that the sliders and pots are noisy on many Yorkville amps, so it's not just this one. Case is pretty heavy duty and the jacks are pretty solid. The solder work inside the amp is sub-par IMO, especially for gigging. It got bounced around a bit in shipping to me and the 2 big caps came off the board. Now any amp will break if you abuse it but this was due to very poor cold solder joints. The rest of the amp held together better. This is important to me because gear doesn't always get treated nicely when you are gigging no matter how careful you are. Shit happens and I need an amp to be able to withstand at least a little punishment.
Overall rating: 6
It's a good budget amp if you like one tone...clean. The EQ is useable but nothing special. Pretty good power output for its rating but about what I would expect. Great value for the money but there are definitely better amps out there. I'm still going to keep this one for a backup/practice amp though. It's perfect for that.
The Genz is next............

Genz Benz GBE-500H
Got this one off the bay as well. Paid $412 + shipping for it. The rack ears were a little bent when I got it, but I fixed those up no problem and they're fine now. This is the predecessor to their current model, the GBE-600 that many of you rave about.
Features: 5
This amp has 2 preamps, one is FET and the other is Tube. You can control the level of each via knobs on the front panel. They are not, however, footswitchable for selecting them or blending them. I think their current model the GBE-600 does this. You can also control the tube harmonics and saturation levels from the front panel as well. Effects loop (serial) send and return jacks are on the front panel as well as the tuner out (which I like in the back better for a rack mount unit). Also there are active and passive inputs on the front panel, Master volume, and 4 band EQ. The DI is also on the front and has a pre/post EQ selection button and a ground lift button as well. Good design there.
Sound: 7
Great sounding amp with a ton of power. The loudest of the 4 by a pretty good margin. Power is not what this amp is lacking at all. Versatility is. You can get great tones out of it, don’t get me wrong, but not nearly as versatile in the EQ section as the other amps tested. I understand they have remedied that with the newer 600 series amps. The fact that you can get really growly tube sounds out of it though is where this amp really shines. Having a lot of control over the tubes character makes this a really nice feature. Best overdrive from just an amp head that I have heard. Really warm with lots of low end booty and not brittle or thin like a lot of amps I have tried. The EQ is set up with low/low mid/hi mid/ and high knobs for setting it. I didn’t get quite as much high end out of this amp as I would have liked for that crisp top end of a slap setting. This amp is really well situated for a rock or metal setting. Not the best one out there for jazz or slap bass sounds. Although the tube overdrive with my fretless sounded pretty damn sweet.
Overall Quality: 7.5
Very well built and well designed. I really liked the layout of the front panel and it’s built to last too. It looks and feels like I could drop it off my roof onto concrete and plug into it and play 5 minutes later. I’m not gonna try that though . All of the pots and buttons are very solid feeling and it has a real nice look to it as well.

Euphonic Audio iAMP 500
Got this one off the bay as well. Paid $500 + shipping. A great deal on this amp. Showed up in great shape. I was a little surprised at the fact that it was a little heavier than I expected. It’s no heavier than any of the other amps tested, I had just heard how light they were and had that preconception.
Features: 9
This is one of the best laid out amplifiers I have ever seen. Really nice design to it. It has a tree semi-parametric 4 band EQ that is very nice and easy to use. A knob controls the level and a slider controls the frequencies. The mids have a full and ½ option as well. In addition to this EQ there are preset buttons for Deep, Presence, Thumb, and Bright to add a little sump’n sump’n to your tone right off the bat. The EQ is also defeatable on the front panel as well to just run everything flat. The DI is also on the front and has a pre/post EQ selection button and a ground lift button and a separate DI out level knob. Really good if you want your stage level and DI levels different. 2 effects loops, 1 serial and 1 parallel. Both have dedicated wet/dry mix knobs on the front panel so you can tweak you effects levels to perfection. Awesome feature. Has a mute button and tuner button as well and the tuner is built right into the amp and viewable on the front panel. That’s a nice feature, but I found the tuner a little jumpy and not as accurate as I would like. It does have a tuner out on the back though. This thing has a ton of great features. I just wish they would have made some of them foorswitchable so that in the middle of a gig I didn’t have to go back to my amp and mess with it to change settings/sound. This was the biggest disappointment in this amp. It seems like they thought of everything and then left out how to make it easy to use in the real world at a gig. The only footswitchable function is mute.
Sound: 9
I look for basically 2 great sounds obtainable in an amp based on the style of the music I play. It has to have a great finger style tone that has clarity without sacrificing low end response, and it has to be able to get a good slap tone. This amp does both. It does both really well. Period. One of the better sounding amps I have ever played through and I’m a former Glockenklang owner. Again it’s unfortunate that I have to actually stop and go back to the amp to change these sounds though. I also want whatever amp I decide on to not need extra EQ pedals, etc. I want that built in. Also while it’s a very good sounding amp, all you will get is clear tones out of it. You will need a tube emulator (BDDI) or overdrive unit if you want and grit out of this amp. It does respond well to that though.
Overall Quality: 8
Looks to be very well built and very well designed. No cheesy cheap components like on some amps. The knobs are a little plasticy but feel pretty good as do the sliders. Nothing exceptional, just good quality.
Overall rating: 8
This is an excellent amp with a ton of features. Great clarity, response, power and one of the most versatile EQ sections I have ever seen in an amp. If they ever make this with footswitchable features or in a 2 channel version, they will sell like hotcakes.

Ampeg SVT-III PRO
This just showed up this morning. I wasn¡¦t expecting it until Monday so I didn¡¦t get a chance to dink around with it before rehearsal. Brought it anyway. Paid $475 + shipping for it on the bay. This thing is in primo shape too. It has one scratch on the right side rack handle but other than that it looks like it¡¦s brand new.
Features: 9
Most of you know about this amp and have read the reviews. It has a ton of great features. It has a 3 band EQ (bass, mid, treble) and a 5 position mid frequency selector switch. I really like this feature as it makes it easy to dial in a great tone right away. It also has a footswitchable 9 band graphic EQ to augment your tone or set up a completely different EQ tone that is instantly accessible. I really like that feature. It¡¦s like they took the EQ from the Yorkville and added the parametric that it was missing. It also has bright, ultra high, and ultra low buttons to kick up the tone instantly depending on what you require. Mute switch is there as well and this and the Graphic on/off are what the 2 button footswitch control. Separate gain and tube gains was a good idea. The DI is on the back, and has a level control as well pre/post EQ. It also has an AC outlet in the back for one other unit like a tuner if you don¡¦t have a big rack with a power conditioner. Nice touch.
Sound: 9
Terrific sound. Not quite what I was expecting. Much more clarity and just plain booty. Lots of balls and with the availability of 2 EQ sections, you can dial in 2 really, really good sounds very quickly (like finger style/slap or fretted/fretless). Adding a bit of the tube gives it added warmth that the EA lacked a little of and really added crispness to the highs. Cranking it gives you a bit of natural tube compression as well. Overall I was blown away by the tone and I was much better than I remember an Ampeg sounding. I¡¦m gonna have to but an all tube one to compare it to. I actually like this better than the SVT-5PRO I played. I like the EQ options a lot more, even though the added power isn¡¦t there. Very adequate power in this amp driving the Eden stack though.
Overall Quality: 9
Built like a tank and it looks like it could stand up to a lot of gigging abuse. All of the knobs and sliders feel great with no looseness and the sliders are very tight. Chassis is solid and the speaker plugs were still so tight on this thing it was tough to get the monster cables in there.
Overall Rating. 8.5
The only features this didn¡¦t have that the EA that I would want did was the semi-parametric EQ (which it more than compensates for with the footswitchable Graphic) and the 2 separate effects loops with wet/dry mix. It¡¦s has been several years since I have played an Ampeg, and maybe my tastes have changed, or their gear got better or I was just stupid back then, but I was extremely impressed with this amp and it does everything I really need and amp to do. Plus it does them all very very well.
The Ampeg SVT-IIIPRO wins round 1 of the shootout. Nobody who reads this is more surprised than I am right now ƒº . We¡¦ll see how it stacks up against Ashdown, EBS, Eden, Trace and some others I have in mind.
Edit: just to be clear, the deciding factor of the Ampeg over the iAmp came down to useable features over tweakability. Both sound great, the iAmp is more versatile EQ-wise, but the SVT had better options so far as practicality during a gig for my purposes. You mileage may vary.

Nope.
Bass magazines will generally tell you every amp is the best thing since sliced bread. I'll tell you what I really think. :)
These are all really good amps in their own right though. I will admit that. I liked them all, I'm just looking for the prefect amp for me.

I'm dying to hear what you think about the Asdown compared to the Ampeg. (Also like to know what you think of the Ashdown, GenzBenz, Mesa Pulse, Ampeg SVT-IV comparison).
Great comparisons.
Stuff I'd like to see you test...
M-Pulse 600, SVT-IV, Hartke sm4000, Eden Road Runner, Aguilar db359, Ashdown ABM series and the new Fender line.
Thanks man. Great work. Wish I could have tested them as well!

Gonna test a lot of 'em. The M-pulse is probably the Mesa I'm going to test. You're right on targe with the Eden...WT-500. AMB500 for Ahsdown, either e Sunn or Fender 300T, and I want to try the new Genz Benz GBE-600 now that they've made a lot of the improvements I would have made over the GBE-500H.

you might really like the Aguilar too. It's expensive, but it sounds delicious to my ears. I've been blown away every time I've played on one. At school, the three larger practice rooms had a Walter Woods through a Bag End cab (a Patitucci leftover I'm sure), an Ampeg SVT-IV through a Hartke 4x10 and an Aguilar db359 through an Ampeg 4x10pro. The Ampeg sounded great through the Hartke (the cab cleared up the detail from the Ampeg), but the Aguilar just sounded so fuckin' hot. Warm, fat, yet detailed and clear. Mamma, what I'd do for that set-up.

The only Aggy I played was a DB359 and GC through an Aggy 112 and I wasn't that impressed. May have needed to be retubed though and most of the gear at that GC is abused, so I'll definitely give them another shot.

Very true. A lot of this is personal preference. I'm looking for the amp that most suits my needs and wants. Everyone is a bit different in what they want and need out of a bass amp.
For instance, one thing that annoyed me a little bit about the EA iAmp 500 is the fact that the power switch is on the back of the amp, while all the others were on the front. Why would you want the power switch on the back of a rack mount amp? It makes it a pain in the ass to turn it on and off when you have to reach through the back of your rack every time. Some people probably don't care about that....I do.

Jazzy,
Don't you think it'd be best to compare all tube heads against all tube heads? As far as I can tell, each of the amps he's tested in his comparison thusfar have had solid state power sections, and it wouldn't be in the spirit of consistency for him to throw in one single all tube head...however, I'd love to see a tube head amp shootout as well

Just rambling here, but one thing I've found with amps (and especially tube amps) is that their 'bedroom' tone can have very little relevance to that amps performance in the mix...this is what makes it really hard for me in terms of selecting gear.

very true. amps can sound entirely different quiet and "at volume", I term I use to suggest an ams true useful volume when playing with others.
The GK combo I used to have, for instance, sounded warm but fairly clean at quiet volume. At gig volume it sounded harsh, brittle and incredibly aggressive. Not the amp for me once I started playing gigs.

+1 Hiwatts are great amps, but I like that you're doing amps that are readily obtainable...;)

Plus I'm gonna start with.....AFFORDABLE!
All of the amps do far were $500 and under. That way I can test out amps that more people can afford and also but a lot more at once and knock out more amps that way.

The one I really would like you to do is a 70's SVT though...several of forumites have them and it would be interesting to see what you think... ;) You won't get your sound switching capability (I do that stuff in front of the amp) but it IS a readily available amp and kind of a benchmark...:)

I see 'em all the time going for $800-$1200. I'll pick one up here in the next couple of months. It's definitely on the list.

Hmm...the Trace V-8 was so sweet amp too...;)
And the Peavey Classic 400 doesn't sound half bad too....but the weight...:D

Bump because this thread almost fell off the forum. :(
Maybe it should be preserved in FAQ form for a bit?

Or maybe I can just preserve it for a while and then combine them all at the end?
