Anyone out there doing a "GINO VANNELLI" quality MIDI-based show, or working at it?

We are working towards this. Our newest music is heavily Gino-ish. What is it you want to know?

What sequencer and sound modules/synths do you use?
Do you use the sequencer live?
How much automation?

Got a "Carlos Rios" type guitar player? :) His leads were killer.

I've got a Chick Corea album with Mike M. on it. He's fantastic as well. I will check out those two Gino albums. Thanks!

We are doing drop track mixes. My partner and I are multi-instrumentalists. We are mixing several different versions of our songs. Ie: one with no vocals and guitars, one with no bass and drums, vox and drums, then no vox and keys, etc. Usually we end up with 5 to 7 "drop track" versions of each tune. We burn them to CD and use the version we feel like playing, live. So if I wanna play my drums and my partner wants to play bass then we'll use that version. This is all in a 50 cd changer.
We want to do as much of our songs live as we can but trying to keep a 8 to 12 piece band together is proving to be impossible in my neck of the woods.
Live we bring midi drums, a Roland GM keyboard, a Roland JP8080, various guitars and basses and we sing in all songs.
We are still in the process of pulling it all together. As we write new material we take into account our live act and do the drop mixes.

Sounds reliable. Do you use a click track? Do you work toward and get a "live" sound quality from your recorded tracks? Do you get (1) song per CD? I am trying to do something similiar using sequencer and 5 pairs of tracks for stereo (1) bass, (2) guitars, (3) strings/horns (4) drums, and (5) keyboards plus a click track. I can mute any one or more of the stereo pairs on my mixer depending on who is there to play live. I mix the instruments to the same tracks on every song. My delima is what to do live...lugg my laptop and all the sound modules, or get a multitrack hard disk recorder. I have a DA-78HR DTS I could use if the song selection within the sets never changed, otherwise it would probably be too slow. CD would probably be a good option for me if the live instrument selection was fixed, but it's not. Decisions....decisions

All our live songs have an identifiable intro so we know when to start. each cd holds one song and it's variations, we program the cd player in the order we want. We try to get studio quality. Our music is not pounding rock so our audience is a little more demanding yet at the same time forgiving and accepting of our act. We have only played live once with this setup as we only have 10 songs prepared. The prep time for each song is enormous!!
