Okay, my studio setup isn't all that great. I only record stuff for fun. Okay, here we go-

1. Basic studio gear/setup.

Custom Built Computer..............................$500
Lexicon Omega Audio Interface...................$200
Cubase LE 4 DAW.....................................(comes with Omega)
(Crappy) BC Rich Warlock...........................$170
(Crappy) Yamaha Keyboard........................$70?
Alesis Sr-18 Drum Machine.........................$250
Line 6 Pocket POD....................................$130
Samson C01 Condenser Mic........................$70

2. How much it cost to put together.
Add it all up, and it's- $1390?? Wow, I never knew how much it was really worth! Well, if you add in the gear I'm eventually going to buy...

Cubase Studio 5.......................................$300
Shure KSM27 Mic......................................$200
Korg MicroKorg Synth................................$400
FireBox Firewire Audio Interface...................$300
No Lexicon Omega...................................-$200

...It's worth $2390. Wow- that's a lot...

3. Some basic pros/cons of the setup
Pros- Pretty good sound quality
Easy to switch between instruments
Custom Computer runs VERY fast

Cons- LATENCY!!! That's why I'm getting the FireBox (USB is too slow)
Drum Machine is a little robotic sounding
Desperately need to upgrade to Cubase 5

4. A rough estimate of the production quality it gives them.
Not bad, definitely not a studio recording, but great for demos.

5. What kind of music and methods it suits
I play Rock/Metal. The Pocket POD helps get great guitar tones, and I plugged in my own custom kit into the SR-18 for drums, and I use the bass sounds with the Alesis, too. Overall it’s great!

would be nice and easier to search through if this could all be somehow categorized by price range and quality maybe..

Price ranges on these studios change monthly and "quality" is in the ears of the beholder. 13 pages long (so far). I don't see any way to accomplish that request.

I think I may have a solution for getting that big studio sound without going completely broke. I just recorded a solo album, and another album with my band. They are both turning out great, but I could use suggestions for next time. Check out the sounds I came up with at www.myspace.com/vandarthmusic or my website, www.vandarth.com. Here's what I did to get my sound:

1. Drums: For mics I used a Shure mic kit. An SM 57 on each tom (3) and one on the snare. I used a beta 52 mic on the kick. For overheads, I used two Bluebird condenser mics. They run about $300 apiece at Guitar Center. I run these mics through some nice mic preamps. I use Pro Tools 7 LE with the Digi 002 box (a little outdated, they have the 003 out now but it's more expensive). For the tom preamps, I just use the Digi 002 pre's. For the kick I used a Universal Audio solo 610 preamp (about $799 on musiciansfriend.com). Then for the overheads, I used two Universal Audio LA-610 preamp/compressors. They're $1500 each, but they sound great. I also use them for bass, guitar and vocals, so they work for everything. For the snare I just used a Sytek MPX-4A solid-state preamp. Then after tracking, I used Steven Slate drum samples ($300). They're perfect recordings of kicks, snares, etc. Chevelle, Paramore, Avenged Sevenfold, anything you hear on the radio these days is using them. I used about 4 kicks and 3 snare samples, and mix them with the sound of the real kick. You can use beat detective to find the beats, and then sample manually (which takes forever) or buy a keyboard that contains macro capability. I use the Logitech G11 keyboard.

2. Guitars: I double the guitar and lay each rythm track down twice. For lead stuff, I just do it once. Here's how I get the rythm sound:

I mic a Mesa Stiletto half stack with a bluebird mic and a Shure SM 57, both running through the UA LA-610 preamp that I used for the overheads. I hard pan them both hard right. Then I record the exact same part again with a stereo direct Mesa Rectifier recording preamp. I pan that hard left and it sounds terrific. Then for leads, I usually just go direct with the Mesa preamp.

Bass: This is my weak point in my mixes right now. It does the job, but isn't especially outstanding. I plug in direct to the UA LA-610 and use slight compression.

Vocals: Use the LA-610 peramp but I don't use the compressor. I use some compression and a limiter in pro tools. I use a Bluebird condenser mic. Usually I duplicate the vocal track (not double, just copy the track and make a 2nd one of the same thing) and add reverb to the 2nd one. Then I mix the two until it sounds good.

EQ: I use Pro Tools 7 Band EQ 3. I came up with some settings of my own after doing some research. Mostly, just carving out a spot on the bass track for the kick drum was the biggest problem. I did boost some of the highs on the lead guitar, but not too much.

Mastering: I downloaded AAMS (Audio Auto Mastering System). It will analyze a recording that you pick, and then compress/normalize/EQ yours until the levels match. I picked Foo Fighters: Long Road to Ruin for my tracks.

That's what I did! Check my sites, www.vandarth.com and www.myspace.com/vandarthmusic to hear how it turned out. I recorded all of the instruments and performed myself. The CD is $1 at vandarth.com if you want to download it. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Vandarth. You have a very cool setup. Anyone who knows about good sound knows that the first step is good mic pre's. As for the dillema with your bass sound, I have a solution that is cheap and sounds great (and is pretty versatile). Go on Ebay, find yourself a late 60's, early 70's Fender Bassman Silverface amp head(1967-1976, the earlier the better). These can be found for $400-$500. What?!?! For a point-to-point vintage tube amp??!?! YES SIR!

I would get the 50 watt as it will be easier to push the tubes into overdrive (natural compression) with the low-wattage amp. Replace the tubes, unless they were recently replaced, and have the amp biased by your local amp-tech. Then pick up a decent 4x10" (plus tweeter) Ampeg cab. Send the bass directly to the Bassman and mic the Ampeg with a LDC, routing the mic through your fabulous pre's. The Bassman is dead simple. It has a volume knob that pushes the preamp tubes from clean to compression or overdrive to fuzz-crunch. And it has a very long throw 2-band EQ which makes a huge difference in the tone, making the amp versatile. The Bassman has two channels, each with two inputs. For recording you can daisy-chain the channels together to get a higher compression ratio from the tubes, or more distortion.

The 50-watt will probably be a smidge cheaper but the 100-watt is great too. It also has two channels, the EQ is a 3-band which makes the amp even more versatile and many of the 100-watters have a master volume. The master volume is a pretty easy mod that you could add to any model.

I currently own the '69 Fender Super Bassman Silverface which is a 100-watt amp. I needed the louder amp to throw louder bass in a live setting but for recording I preferred the Bassman 50 that I used to have.

The late 60's and early 70's Bassmans were the template for all of the early Marshall Hi-Gain amps, so this thing also sounds KILLER with guitar. Every studio should have one. Some people will tell you that the Blackface is better, and in some ways they are. But the price difference between Black and Silver is not really worth it, especially for bass guitar.

I was like you. Never happy with bass guitar recordings. Recording through a tube-powered bass rig was the only thing that changed that. Well, Native Instruments Guitar Rig plug-in does it great too!

See more about these amps:

This ends my good deed for the day :)

No flaming here!
For acoustics, I just picked up a Yamaha APX500 and LOVE it!
It was only $299 @ GC and was pretty highly rated on MF.
Easy action, good tone, onboard tuner and great feel.
I'll be learning and then teaching the kids on that one.

The wifey also bought me a Laguna LG, but those are a bit more $$.

OK, Here goes:

After a LOT of reading/ researching (check out real traps and steve klein sound webpages) and looking on ebay for good equipment that studios were upgrading from (and some new stuff), reading on HC, and creative low to no cost furniture, I settled on:

Room: 11x14, wood floor, staggered stud wall construction, window to outside, steel garage door for studio door(!), self made room treatment with OC 703/ 704 covered in 4mil plastic then acoustically trasparent fabric ($8 each). Wood floor was DIY, $90 closeout. Mixer furniture was an abandonded sleigh bed mahogany footboard on it's side on an abandoned old (but sturdy!) large cosmetically beat up computer desk (total cost: FREE).

DAW: SONAR 7 on DELL duel core PC with 20" flatscreen display

DAW Control: Yamaha 01x

EQ/ compressors: URS A,N,S series; 01x and sonitus compressors

Console: Tascam M-3500. Glorified set of faders for the external summing unit and as a setup for cue mixes. D/A from SONAR to the fader/ channel strip then direct out to external summing. Gives me faders with no audible degridation.

Summing: SPECK X-SUM

Reverbs: Yamaha 01x (From Yamaha DM2000) x2 units and Lexicon Pantheon

Conversion: Yamaha i88x, RME ADi-8, Mindprint DI-PORT

Pres: Yamaha i88x and MLA-8 (10 of these total), Mindprint x2, HHB Radius 50 tube pre/compressor, Joe Meek VC3, SP VTB-1

Monitors: KRK ST6, Blue Sky EXO

Hardware Compressors: HHB Radius 50, Joemeek VC3, Samson S-COM

Key plugs: URS Eq's, URS Saturation, Yamaha pitchfix, compressors, sonitus compressor, multiband compressor, and limiter

Mics: Sure SM 57, SP B1,C1, BLUE Bluebird, MXL 603s(x2) Oktavia MK-219, CAD Trion 8000 tube mic, Cascade Fathead II ribbon mic.

Total cost (room, furniture, treatment, equipment) about $12K

Pros: Really good, clear, 3-D sound. Mixes translate well, but I also know the monitors. Better than a number of local pro studios. Enough ins/ outs for just about anything I come up against. 20 channels out to the speck. Lots of faders and good summing. (Not trying to start up the ITB/OTB debate but it works for me).

Cons: Not Protools so some will look at it in a negative light. Took a lot of time to research and look on ebay for deals and to decide what route to take that would work best for me given the cost restraints. Also not big names on a lot of the equipment, but it's just for me and select friends. Preamps are clean, so need to get the sound right at the source, use mic placement. Flavor comes from sound source and EQ/ compression, although URS saturation can give some flavors. Mlan has a steep learning curve and needs lots of tweaking to get it right, but once it's set, it works fantastically.

I posted years ago in this thread, and I've made huge upgrades since then so I wanted to make another post.

I have some pics below and some links to original songs I recorded with this setup.

I don't record my band here, I just work on covers for educational purposes and original songs for fun. I do each instrument individually, but I could probably record a whole band here. It's not ideal acoustically but for an amateur setup but it's not bad.

I have my workstation up high so it's convenient to use while standing when playing guitar or singing. I use a wireless keyboard to control the software while recording the drums.

Computer: Custom built Athlon64 3200, 2 gigs of RAM, two 80gig IDE hard drives (saving cash with some old hardware), M-Audio Delta 1010LT. I run Windows XP with Cubase SE.

Mixer: Behringer UB1202

Preamp: Ol' cheapy Audiobuddy

Monitors: Some old low end M-audio monitors.

Mics: CAD Pro cheapy 7-piece, Shure SM-57, MXL condenser and some others.

Also I use Sennheiser HD280s for tracking.

Instruments: Squier CV 60s Strat, Fender MIM Tele, PRS SE Singlecut, Chordbender, Martin DC-16RGTE, Guild GAD G212, Carvin Bolt 4-string Bass, Pearl Export 5-piece (late 80s with Zildjian A crash/ride, Zildjian hihats, and Sabian AA thin crash), Peavy Delta Blues, Peavy Classic 20, Fender Bassman 100.

My gear is really dang simple... Just a Fostex MR8 MKII 8-track recorder, Alesis SR-18 drum machine, a few guitar/bass pedals (boss, digitech, etc.) and a Shure PG 58 microphone (complete with a whole mess of wires). It's good enough for my "just for fun" solo project, but I'd never record a band with this. lol
