hey everyone
ive been playin guitar for a while, and am starting to write some of my own stuff. I have lots of ideas and riffs that i have wrote but i can't seem to put different parts of a song together. I always get the idea of my first riff, chord progression, or whatever stuck in my head, and can't seem to go far away from it. Do you all have any advice on how to do this? I have tried recording the basic riff into the computer and playing it over and over to hear something in my head, but didn't really work for me. Thanks for any help.

I hear your problem dude! One possibbilty you may want to approach is not worrying so much about the guitar first. Just kind of play that riff and mumble a random melody over it and see if that makes you hear anything regarding the progression of the song. Think of what exactly you want to get across in the song. Think of a song as a painting or a memory or emotion and play off of that. Try not to think as much chordally. A good melody will open up harmonic and chordal possibilities. Also, you could try taking that riff and just play something over it. Jam with yourself! Another idea is just simply to jam with CD's you have for ideas and whatnot. Don't let musician's block get you down dude! Sometimes it's just a matter of letting go of what you know and just feeling the music! Hope this incessant rambling has contributed to your cause in some way!

Try messing around with your loops. Cut them up and paste the pieces in a different order. A program called Tuareg ( www.brambos.com ) has really kick started my creativity at times with some of the tools the program has. It's meant more for dance and techno music, but it can really do wonders on guitar samples.
