I need advise on a good expression pedal to be used with a Rocktron All Access (or any midi pedal I guess). I now use a Boss EV-5, but it feels a bit plastic? is there a better expression pedal to be used? (I like Ernie Ball volume pedals, but heard they do not function as exprsssion pedal - wrong impendence?)
Thanks for your advice!

I prefer the Ernie Ball pedals but there are other alternatives. What some people find is that the taper of the Ernie Ball's pot doesn't match well with their midi pedal's CC port. That is cheaply and easily changed out. Do a search on this a you will get a lot of info.

email me and i'll walk you through modding the ernie ball 6166 pedal to work great with your all access. i use two of these pedals with my AA and i couldn't be happier.

Is this something that needs to be done to the Ernie Ball pedal no matter what midi controller you are using?

I had to mod my 6166 with the GC Pro. Before I modded it I was only getting a sweep of about 5% in the toe.

I use a Korg XVP-10 Expression Pedal and i am very happy with it. It is rock solid.

I must be really lucky. I use the EB6166 with a Ground Control and have no problems with the sweep. Maybe it's f'd up?

hmm...bizarre...if you've got a log pot, the sweep should be concentrated at one end or the other...

maybe something particular about the gc?

i have a moogerfooger ring mod....can the ernie ball control it ?

what ernie ball-model does work as an expression pedal ?

the moogerfooger needs a 50k or 100 k pot i think.

I've got a 6166 and it works fine with it, there's a little switch that can change the tapering of the pedal for swelling. If you play around with that it shouldn't be a problem at all...

Also it may be that you're using the wrong one, like, one for active pickups (25K pot or something.)
I'd imagine they wouldn't work either...

Has anyone tried the Rocktron HEX pedal? I looked at the instruction manual, but was kind of turned off by the TRS cable the thing uses. Do you really need to use a TRS cable to get the HEX to function as an expression pedal, say, in a DMC Ground Control?

What's wrong with TRS?

I'd rather it be that way than an insert-cable.

Then there's no Y's

It would look a lot cleaner too.

I'm using a Ground Control and an EB 6166 right now. All I need is a "normal patch cord" to make the connection between controller and expression pedal. If I were to get the HEX, would I also need to get a new cable, or would my old cable suffice?

Interestingly enough I use a Boss 300L with my GCP to control the VCA in my system mix+ and it works just fine with no mods or anything.
All I do is run a short stereo cable(TRS to TRS) from the 300L to the GCP ctrlr input #1 and set it up in the GCP menu.

TRS output is how you truly use the 300L as a expression pedal.
It does have some slack in the taper and all I had to do for that is adjust the taper pot on the pedal up from minimum until I started to hear audio and then back it down one notch from there.

Now it starts the audio taper w/ the VCA as soon as I start to move the pedal all the way to max and has a natural feel. I haven`t had any problems since.

btw,

I tried a couple of ernie ball volume pedals and they are great pedals in terms of build but I tried a couple that had the switches on the side(6165,6168). I didn`t like them because it was too easy to hit it by mistake and then it makes your expression not respond or respond all weird. That`s not a good thing when you are on a gig and can`t figure out why you don`t have any sound. They don`t all have that switch on the side though.

my 2 cents,

Tom
