I have a keyboard controller with one midi out, no in. I have a Yamaha QY-70 with midi in/out. I have a Delta Audiophile 2496 with midi in/out. I want to use the keyboard controller with the QY-70 and the soundcard into Sonar. If I unplug the midi connection from the card into the QY-70 and plug the keyboard controller in to the QY, it makes sound but does not record onto Sonar. It works fine with the mini keyboard on the QY if I have the midi in/out from the card to the QY. Is there a way to do this maybe with a box of some kind? Thanks, J

Hey jbow - Interesting variety of gear you have there. First, you know that there's NO transmission of SOUND when it comes to your Midi cables right? Midi just carries data. So until you decide to hook AUDIO cables from your QY 70 to the Delta card, Sonar wont be able to capture any actual SOUND.
Having said that, Sonar can certainly capture your MIDI data and have the QY 70 PLAYBACK Midi tracks from Sonar just fine. You'll just need to listen with head phones (or speakers) attached to your QY70 and your Delta card wont actually be processing any SOUND.
IN any case, you dont need any more "black boxes".
*******************
OPTION ONE (A Midi-only setup that would work):
Midi Out from controller to Midi In of QY 70
Midi Out of QY 70 to Midi In of Delta AND
Midi In of QY70 to Midi Out of Delta
THEN, the most IMPORTANT thing...besides setting channels right in this whole thing...is selecting your Delta adapter's Midi Ins and Outs wherever it is that you configure Midi Ports IN SONAR. Otherwise Sonar wont know what youre trying to do! Then you should be ready to make Midi-only tracks with Sonar.
*********************
OPTION TWO (A Midi AND Audio setup)
Do the steps above in Option One
THEN ALSO Connect audio cables OUT from the QY79 to AUDIO IN on the Delta card. NOW you can make Midi tracks, as above - AND make true Audio tracks after editing your initial Midi work, AND hear all this from your computers speakers if theyre attached to audio outs on the Delta, AND you can convert everything to wav files when youre ready to, in Sonar, and youre working with real digital audio data.
**********************
The QY70 is a clever device. However, Ive never worked with it myself. You realize that it is already a SEQUENCER all by itself, right? I dont know how to bypass this to do what youre trying to do, but you want to make sure that the QY70 is not interfering when youre playing and that it "knows" youre sending Midi and Audio data to your soundcard and to Sonar. I'm sure it can support this and just be your sound source. Good luck, LFE

Hi LFE, I'm a little confused still, you wrote...
OPTION ONE (A Midi-only setup that would work):
Midi Out from controller to Midi In of QY 70
Midi Out of QY 70 to Midi In of Delta AND
Midi In of QY70 to Midi Out of Delta
I'm not sure how to go from the keyboard out to the in of the QY and from the out of the Delta to the in of the QY.
Thanks, J

Okay. Well, you said the following:
"I have a keyboard controller with one midi out, no in. I have a Yamaha QY-70 with midi in/out. I have a Delta Audiophile 2496 with midi in/out."
So if your gear really has these connections then you simply buy Midi cables and hook them up as I suggested. (Thats a total of three cables - one between keyboard and QY and two between QY and your Delta's Midi adapter. Plug in as I explained - your MIDI connections are labeled on everything, right?) But if there's something I'm not being clear about - please let me know what you mean. Best, LFE

I really don't understand and I really do appreciate the help.
If I go out of the controller and into the QY. Then out of the QY and into the card I have used up both the in and the out on the QY and I don't know how then to go from the out on the card to the in on the QY. Thanks, J

Ahhhh....youre absolutely right, too. How dumb of me! I've only been doing Midi for like 4 years too.
I'm glad you kept after me. Okay the QY only has one Midi in and out. Yes. And we need to get a Midi connection back from the sound card to the QY. Sorry, youre right - an adapter is needed. A good source is www.midiman.com. Or just talk to somebody like www.zzounds.com by phone in the morning.
Really sorry. Geesh. Meantime, for my stupidity, I'll dig a bit and try to get back to you with a suggestion. (By the way, you could play with the controller IN to the QY and just the QY Out to the card. And then unplug the controller and plug from the cards out to the QY's in and listen if Sonar has captured properly. But you want something permanent that wont have you unplugging and switching all the time.)

Midi out of the controller to midi in on the card. Midi out of the card to midi in of the QY. It works!!! Yes! Thanks again, J
