Was there a "last" classic rock album ? Was there a point in time when Classic rock stopped and punk, hair, synth, or
what-have-you started ?

A.IC.'s Dirt- the last great Classic Rock Album......
Do you mean classic rock in the sense of radio station formats? Or a generalization? I think "rock" has always been around. Let's start with Zep for time's sake. From them all the way to Pearl Jam, with Skynyrd, Boston, Journey, Poison, Crue, AIC, Soundgarden. All of those bands in between, have always made "rock" music. So do you mean "classic" to mean regular, or as in dated?

I guess the easiest thing would be to tell you to go look for this post on the guitar forum. It went on all day, even though I expected more responses here. Thanks !

When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit the airwaves, classic rock was dead.

What was so "classic" about Journey, anyway???
There's a "classic rock" station that plays the same dozen or so bands every day in my city:
-AC/DC
-Aerosmith
-Van Halen
-Pink Floyd
-Led Zeppelin
-Lynyrd Skynyrd
-Def Leppard
-Foreigner
...and several others I can't remember right now. I used to like these bands. Now I'm so sick of them I could vomit.

Maybe in a few more years they'll play nirvana on classic rock stations. The stuff needs to age you know. Go back to 1985, and tell eveyone that classic rock stations would be playing U2, and The Cars. You'd get big laughs. They play both of them here in seattle, but i can only stand to listen to the station maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Ply the same shit over and over.

Classic rock is a media creation, not a musical one. A song becomes "classic rock" when it can be played on a classic rock station and make profit for advertisers.
Hell, I think Wilco's new album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is some classic rock n roll. Same for Radiohead's "Kid A" and "Amnesiac".
Of course, if you mean the media-sponsored-tunnel-vision type thing, I think it ended with the birth of "punk".
People get this WAY wrong...the Sex Pistols did NOT invent rock. They were created by a damned clothing store owner, for Chrissakes!
So, who birthed "punk"? The Clash, still one of my favorite bands. The Ramones (who are sadly dying off fast). Possibly also the Stooges, and maybe MC5.
Now, that stuff still "rocks", and I consider it "classic". But, if you are letting them impose these genre labels on you, then I would say "classic rock" died when punk was born.
Oops, I meant to say the Sex Pistols didn't invent punk. They sure as hell didn't invent rock. :)

Really some of those bands sre still around Lou Grahm is from my hometown and Foriegner still plays and is getting ready to tour. Those bands also produce new albums with a slightly "classic" sound. What people have to realize is that when all those groups came out in the late 60's or early 70's they were establishing a genre and precedent on the rock scene. That became so ingrained in a generation that we still have a working class side of every city that listens to that music. It is very blue collar oriented. I mean it is over played by corporate radio stations. The punk scene kicked rock and roll right in the ass.
The 80's brought in the pop groups and the old bands had to struggle to remain part of the scene and catch on the brand new MTV bandwagon when it came. Then the late 80's had the hair bands (Warrant, Ratt, Winger, Poison). There popularity stuck around till the "Seattle Sound" made it's debut in the early 90's. The 90's had bands such as Counting Crowes, Blues Traveler and U2 holding on. There again the old bands had to struggle. Most of their popularity is based on old fans and old songs. Rock unfortuneatly is a dead art form in way. Even guys like John Cougar or Billy Joel said in interviews that "it is no longer vital" or "It's not music of the streets". Like it or not Hip Hop is the thing now. Music just evolves but it will never be like it was or that "fresh sounding again". It's just my opinion but I think the writing and musicianship has gone down and I got out of that scene.

Rock is dead?????????????
Do you guys have your heads in the ground??
Garage Rock is actually on the rise...
Buy these albums by these folks today if you are worried -
Guided By Voices - Isolation Drills (their new one comes out in two weeks)
The Strokes - This Is It
Queens of The Ston Age - Rated R
The Foo Fighters - There's Nothing Left To Lose
The White Stripes
Pete Yorn - Music for the morning after
The Hives
Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies of the Future
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin (They also have a new one out)

Stop getting your new music from corporate radio, Rolling Stone and Spin, and MTV/VH1 and you'll discover lots of killer stuff
My newest favorite classic rock album is Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels To Be Something On. It was actually released in 1998 but I just got turned on to it last month.

I am really not into that scene anymore. Keyboard players do not get much play but it is not as vital as it was, never will be. There probably is some decnet stuff out there but like I said the quality has gone down.

I was talking about Classic Rock, not garage rock. Garage rock could include grunge, hair, etc. I don't think bands like Styx, Foreigner, Boston, REO, Journey, Eagles, etc. are garage bands.
I'd heard the Strokes single, not the entire CD, but I wasn't impressed. Nothing really orginal, but like I said, I only heard one tune.

The Strokes aren't original, yes, but they still kick ass.
If you like to drink with friends - try this.
Play the new Strokes CD loudly while you drink some cold Budweisers.
You'll quickly be converted.
I think you are defining "classic rock" as the tired kind of music heard on "Classic Rock Radio" - Styx, Bob Seeger, Steve Miller Band, Foreigner...
Hey I LOVE that stuff but the songs are soooooooooo played out. I like all the bands they play - I just wish they would choose different singles.
As in, instead of playing Sabbath - War Pigs, Iron Man or Paranoid - they could play Lord Of This World, Supernaut and Into the Void.
Fill in you favorite band.
The reason people think their is no good music being made currently is do to laziness. Just because it's not on the radio right now or MTV or Rolling Stone, doesn't mean it ain't out there.
Like listening to ONE Strokes song briefly and saying it didn't do anything for you...
Anyway, what was the question.............
Last great classic rock album ? The Gene Simmons/KISS solo album
How about Foghat's Greatest Hits? Or Rick Derringer or what about Steve Perry's "Oh, Sherry" (Sherry Perry)

So you're saying I have to be buzzed at the least, preferably drunk , in order to get "The Strokes". That's what I like-- music that tests my sobriety !
Here's a question---Many classic rock bands are still producing cds, so how come the classic rock stations don't play the latest releases from classic rock artists ?

i'd have to agree with you to a point. What is dead is rock radio, give or take the few college stations out there playing cool stuff, and most of those there are only a few weekly shows that play cool stuff. for the most part you will never hear an original song played on the radio. you can't even find one over the 3.5 minute mark. if it doesn't have a hook within 30 seconds you're screwed. the only band i've seen beat this format is Tool. They're they only band i can think of that can still write a 7 minute song and the radio will actually play it.
There is a lot of cool stuff out there, you just have to look.
If you like How it feels....you simply must pick up Diary. It's Sunny Day's 1st full length and it's amazing. Also, there is LP2, or it's also called the Pink album. Just in case you didn't know, the original bass player and drummer in the touring Foo Fighters were from Sunny Day. Will, the drummer, came back and started playing with Sunny Day again on the album you have and the bass player is still with the Foo. okay, i've rambled enough.

No beatles, rolling stones, cream, who, allman brothers, henrdix, etc. on a "classic rock" station?
I've always thought of Appetite for destruction as the last classic rock album, but most of it had died out long before that.
