Bob Seger's "Like A Rock"
And don't say Chevrolet, 'cause it was "big" before they bought the rights.

Probably because at the time it came out, music was in a very lame state.

The Christian undertones of the lyrics and cheesy blue collarness of the music probably appealed to the truckers and rednecks (who surprisingly, listen to a lot of music - how do you think country got so huge?)

I'd have to see the demographics from Seeger's record company and from Chevrolet before I can answer that question. :D :D :D :D
It all comes down to marketing. Or so they think.

I don't think the song's crap at all. The song has stood through time on it's own, and not as a novelty song so it's kinda proved itself to be valid.
You said yourself that just because something strikes our fancy doesn't make it good, at the same time just because it doesn't strike yours doesn't mean it sucks.
My personal feelings on the song, I can't really say. I recognize it as a good tune but I've heard it so many times that my mind just tunes it out now, even Segar's voice has just become background to me now. Don't really think it's as good as something like Fire Lake or Against the Wind though.

Actually, what I meant was that at the time the song came out, people embraced it because it was better than what was out there at the time. I don't deny it's a good song - though through overexposure, I've also tuned it out.

I'm a Seger fan, but that tune always seemed so, for a lack of a better word, lame. The hook is only three notes. Maybe the simplest "big" hook I know.
Why this bothers me, I have no idea. I imagine it's my frustration at trying to find a clever hook line, only to hear "Like A Rock" every time I turn around.
