Lets just say you were commisioned to write a new national anthem (for your own country) ... what sort of things would you want to say in it ???

If I was doing it for the US (I'm actually Canadian living in the US) I'd probably do something along the lines of "America The Beautiful" - show off the good things about the country.

I dont know what I would do...but I know what I wouldn't. I would completely avoid any reference to anything modern or typical of this time period. I would keep it generic. Maybe a slow melody line and a slow build up to the end. It has to be able to be sung or played in different ways, to allow people to add their own touches to the song when it is performed.

For an empire-style of country, I'd have a hard time coming anywhere near Elgars Pomp & Circumstance March 1. There has never been a more magnificent example of pompous excellence. Unfortunatly, England is still stuck with God Save The Queen. Oh, well. Their loss...

Whatever the lyrics are the music would definitely be Metallica's Seek and Destroy. :D

I'd do one of those Star Wars or Jaws kind of things and let the music do the talking. :D

I nominate Radiohead's "The National Anthem" as the new actual "National Anthem".

Let's see that high school band class try to pull off that horn section! :D

I agree, something uplifting yet intimidating......Kindof like those russian classical music pieces with the "dont fuck with me" attitude.
