I was thinking about this just the other day.
I think my favorite is the chorus in "Helplessly Hoping" by CSN&Y.
They are one person
They are too alone
They are three together
They are for each other

I love all the Seven Deadly Sins.
I like to watch them smile on The Celebrity Smile Show.
That's the show where everybody wins -
a fabulous tour of the hell they already know.
Mark Eitzel - "Sleep"
I've always like Scritti Politti's "Lover to Fall" where each time the chorus goes:
I'm tellin' you baby 'cos baby it's true
I'm gonna be the lover to fall for you.
But, towards the end it goes:
I'm tellin' you baby 'cos baby who cares
There's gonna be a day when the rich get theirs.
I find it amusing in an unrepentent pop love song.

Great song. I'm glad you got me into her!
Depends on what you mean by smart lyrics. When I think of 'smart' lyrics I tend to think of clever lyrics. And those are my favorite kind. I don't mean the cliched play on words that EVERY country artist was doing on EVERY song about 2 or 3 years ago (it's slacked off a bit..not much though)
I'd have to say 'Watching the Detectives' by Elvis Costello.
If I had to choose one line in the song

No need to tell me how or tell me why

something has to change
undeniable dilemma
boredoms not a burden
anyone should bear
constant over stimulation
numbs me
and i wouldnt have it
any other way
not enough
i need more
nothing seems to satisfy
i dont want it
i just need it
to feel, to breathe, to know im alive
finger deep within the borderline
show me that you love me and that we belong together
relax, turn around and take my hand
i can
help you change
tired moments into pleasure
say the word and well be
well upon our way
blend and balance
pain and comfort
deep within you
till you will not have me any other way
its not enough
i need more
nothing seems to satisfy
i dont want it
i just need it
to feel, to breathe, to know im alive
knuckle deep inside the borderline
this may hurt a little but its something youll get used to
relax.. slip away
omething kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be
desensitized to everything
what became of subtlety?
but how can this mean anything to me
if i really dont feel anything at all?
ILL
KEEP
DIGGING
till I
FEEL
SOMETHING
elbow deep inside the borderline
show me that you love me and that we belong together
shoulder deep within the borderline
relax... turn around and take my hand

there's holes up in the sky
and the devil punched down to the monkeys
and now we got drive through
and a video store where there used to be real live actors
used to ride around here
up on my high horse
with all the other good little butcher boys
a plagarist, of course
so roll over, sweet thing
like a nuclear reprisal, inbound from outer space
there's a comparison i'm trying to swing
god damn it's deafening
i wish you'd shut up about everything
the future is x-rated
there's holes up in the sky
and no one's seen your son in days
and things just keep getting weirder and weirder
and now christmas is for shopping
and the shopping god is everything
so roll over, and lose it
'cause power's just another one of those things, baby
it's pointless if you ain't gonna use it
god damn it's deafening
wish you'd shut up about everything
the future is x-rated

No--this instead:
This man he was a Mexican
Oh yea
Adopted into Norwegian
Oh Yea
Turned into American
Oh yea
But he felt a Mexican
Oh yea
Down Mexico way
Oh yea
He had to learn Spanish
Oh yea
He was a walking fish
Oh yea
He was feeling so brackish
Down Mexico way
Between Norwegian and English
He decided it was time to go
To find the people that he did not know
But the road to Mexico
Oh yea
They should go fast but they should go slow
Oh yea
It's a dangerous road
By now you know that he was fucked
By now you know he had no luck
He was hit on the head by a giant truck
Down Mexico way
Oh yea

(I couldn't find just one to quote...but the last stanza is my favorite)
Angry Young Man (by Billy Joel)
There's a place in the world for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl
He's always at home with his back to the wall
And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost
And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be knowns as the angry young man
Give a moment or two to the angry young man
With his foot in his mouth and his heart in his hand
He's been stabbed in the back, he's been misunderstood
It's a comfort to know his intentions are good
And he sits in a room with a lock on the door
With his maps and his medals laid out on the floor
And he likes to be known as the angry young man
I believe I've passed the age
Of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight
I once believed in causes too
I had my pointless point of view
And life went on no matter who
Was wrong or right
And there's always a place for the angry young man
With his fist in the air and his head in the sand
And he's never been able to learn from mistakes
So he can't understand why his heart always breaks
But his honor is pure and his courage as well
And he's fair and he's true and he's boring as hell
And he'll go to the grave as an angry old man

It seems I've imagined Him all of my life
As the wisest of all of mankind,
But if God's holy wisdom is foolish to man,
He must have seemed out of His mind!...
Even His family thought He was mad,
And the priests say a demon's to blame
But God in the form of this angry young man
Could not have seemed perfectly sane...
We in our foolisness thought we were wise.
He played the fool and opened our eyes
We in our weakness believed we were strong
He became helpless to show we were wrong....

ONE - Creed
Affirmative may be justified
Take from one give to another
The goal is to be unified
Take my hand be my brother
The payment silenced the masses
sanctified by oppression
Unity took a back seat
Sliding further in regression
One
The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind
Society blind by color
Why hold down one to raise another
Discrimination now on both sides
Seeds of hate blossom further
The world is heading for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall, but in the end
We meet our fate together
One
The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind

CHORUS:
Slip slidin’ away
Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away
I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown
He said Delores
I live in fear
My love for you’s so overpowering
I’m afraid that I will disappear
CHORUS
know a woman
Became a wife
These are the very words she uses
To describe her life
She said a good day
Ain’t got no rain
She said a bad day’s when I lie in bed
And think of things that might have been
CHORUS
And I know a father
Who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons
For the things he’d done
He came a long way
Just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned around and headed home again
CHORUS
God only knows
God makes his plan
The information’s unavailable
To the mortal man
We work our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway
When in fact we’re slip slidin’ away

The Wonder Stuff - Cartoon Boyfriend
"There's a worm in my head and a fish in the bed," she said
Confused you will be
He's got the car on the lawn and he's using the horn again
Annoyed she will be
Cartoon boyfriend when you gonna rub yourself out
"There's a girl at my door and she's begging for more," he said
"Abused you will be"
"If you touch a hair on my head then you'd be better off dead"
She said "Oh joking you must be"
Cartoon boyfriend when you gonna rub yourself out
There were pieces of gold in his mouth when they met
And now there's just pieces of coal
There was a thought in his head the first time she said
And now there's just a gaping hole

and stuff but, that's not enough, Crayola Kid.)

Creed - Say I
The dust has finally settled down on the field of human clay.
Just enough light has shown through
to tell night from the day.
We are incomplete and hollow
for our makers gone away.
Who is to blame?
Will surely melt in the rain...
The stillness is so lifeless with no spirit in your soul.
Like children with no vision doing exactly what they´re are told.
Being let into the desert
for your strength will surely fade.
Who is to blame?
Will surely melt in the rain...

One night me and the crew hit the road on a mission
To slurp free brew and go fuzzy flounder fishin'
Kayjees on the hi-fi and the keg was bottomless
Until we brought Skip O'Pot2Mus
And Daddy's gonna get some probably underage and dumb
And everybody knows that the Daddy eats his young
Lupus in the lavatory makin' a big stink
Macin' up the toilet seat and poopin' in the sink
M.S.G.'s tanked up and wizzin' in a cup
Waitin' for a sprinkle genie to come and drink it up
'Cause I'm the One Bottle Willy with the Twelve Horse Ale
After that I get silly like Soupy Sales
Now it's midnight and I'm completely boofy blitzed
A six of Schlitz and the Jew brew Manischewitz
With my beer-tinted glasses I'm ready to biddy battle
I'm "Hungry Like The Wolf" but I'll end up tendin' cattle
'Cause you're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
And I'm pretty fuckin' drunk
Here she comes a funky fried cutie
Mr. Jimmy Pop Ali is gonna get some booty
'Cause I'm Mr. McFeelie with a Speedy Delivery
You'd think I was a ditch the way this chick was diggin' me
But maybe I should check and see if this is where I wanna be
Hey Lupus is she cute? Yeah for a Pygmy
What do you know? You're probably goin' home alone
And it wouldn't be the first time that I gave a dog a bone
Plus beauty it's only skin deep
It's in the eye of the beholder and my beholder's about to tweak
I could tap that barrel in fact I know I can
It's a ménagé a trois you and me and Heineken
'Cause you're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
And I'm pretty fuckin' drunk
Regrets I've had a few
First and foremost I'd like to mention you
For the sake of conversation we'll call you the brand new heavy
You're a mix between an Ugnaut and Eugene Levy
You can call it big-boned I'd prefer to call it gut
You're Buddha you're Shamu you're Jabba the fuckin' Hutt
You had harpoon scars and your boobies were hairy
I smelt tuna melt but I wasn't gonna worry
It was 3:00 A.M. and I wasn't gettin' squat
So I rolled you up in flour and aimed it for the wet spot
I was buttering rolls like a soup kitchen Christian
Then it hit me somethin' bit me while my little rod was fishing
I was deep sea fishin' I took a fat chance
But how was I supposed to know that Jabberjaws lived in your pants?
At that junction I came to realize
That only Frank Purdue likes thighs that size
Fatty fatty boom ba latty I gotta lament
That you were not a girl you were an experiment
'Cause you're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk
You're pretty when I'm drunk

Ah, the news of my impending death
Came at a really bad time for me
I was far too young to depreciate

Now I'm getting sealed bids for a granite vault

the lyrics to Pink Floyds "No more turning away" sorry i dont feel like finding and posting them, but most probably know them.
Some of the best lyrics from a band that everyone should check out- Uncle walt's band-
Desiree- BY WALTER HYATT
Oh Desiree, for once so fair
there should be heaven and a gentle hand to take her there
To your sweet life, my sugurcane
the sweetness of the world
should come like falling rain
Oh Desiree, For once so young
There Should be magic words and spoken with a golden toungue.
and in her heart, that magic done
That warms and lights the day
just like the golden sun
Oh, desiree, when we're apart
though I can't describe the sadness that comes to my heart
to see your eyes, to hear your voice
would bring my soul to life
and make my heart rejoice
Oh desiree, oh desiree, oh desiree
Deeper than love - Walter hyatt
Oh my dearest darling
Your on my mind tonight
now that spring is comming
and the leaves are bright
when i read your letter
i remember life
oh, no
it's deeper than love
that mountain music
makes me think of you
everytime i hear it
want you to hear it too
when i hear the music
i remember life
oh no
it;s deeper than love
it's just a simple beat of hearts
just a glove on the hand of time
It's so long we've been apart
when I remember your life I remember mine
oh my dearest darling
I'm no one's sweet heart now
I've left love behind me
It's never right somehow
when I read your letter
I remember life
oh no
It's deeper than love
High hill- Champ Hood (Uncle walt's band)
I'm alone in my thoughts like the night wind's cry
Last night I thought i saw some love in your eyes
I was hitting pretty heavey on your gin and wine
And it's true you had been on my mind
Do you really want to know how I'm spending my time
I'm just tryin to make the best of your love
I'm holding on now to the potters wheel
and it's turing me so fast that I don't know what I feel
I could be on a ship at sea
with only my thoughts to burden me
I guess it all depends on where to want to be
I'm just tryin to make the best of your love
I live upon a high hill
Work my hand in wire and wood
and i sing like a whippoorwill
and everynight there one thing on my mind
only that you love me
until the day I die
If you love me then
you know I would not mind
Everything I do everything I feel
Is comming back to me in a endless reel
like a movie I don't want to see
because I knew about the man and his misery
and your the only one who remains a mystery
I'm just tryin to make the best on your love
I live upon a high hill
Work my hand in wire and wood
and i sing like a whippoorwill
and everynight there one thing on my mind
only that you love me
until the day I die
If you love me then
you know I would not mind
One more the Walter hyatt
"green tree"
In deapest oceans
and far from shore
away beneath the
resounding storm
great whales were playing
full fathom nine
where they were safe from
the whalers Line
the seasons harm
as children rushing
to see the fair
together wondered
in the pastures there
through spring was calling
to every heart
then dusk came falling
drew them apart
when raindrops fell
Why did the fragile , once seem so strong
why did forever , once seem so long
when words were gentle
and love was new
when i was worthy
as she was true

There's so much to choose from, here's a few of my favorite "smart lyrics" from Ministry.
don't follow my path to extinction
if I had a mind I'd leave it alone
we speak of liberation children, ghetto medication
like a journey to the inside of carnal-fiction
release yourself where the preditor prays
rewind your mind
freeze your world apart
wage war on the eye which cannot see
destroy the temple of emptyness
and what about them in the wake of damnation?
and what about us?
do we come from God?
--What About Us?
absolution and a frozen room
are the dreams of men below
i try to grab it but the touch is hot
the mirror collapses, but the image came not
i'm scared of the darkness in the light
i scare myself because i know i'm right
i see the evil in your savage eye
as it cuts right through the sky
burning inside! burning inside!
--Burning Inside
so what, it's your problem to learn to live with
destroy us, or make us saints
we don't care, it's not our fault that we were born too late
a screaming headache on the brow of the state
killing time is appropriate
to make a mess and fuck all the rest, we say, we say
so what? so what?

"The further we go
And older we grow
The more we know
The less we show"
"10.15
Saturday night
And the tap drips
Under the strip light
And I'm sitting
In the kitchen sink
And the tap drips
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Waiting
For the telephone to ring
And I'm wondering
Where she's been
And I'm crying
For yesterday
And the tap drips
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
It's always the same"

You can't talk to a psycho like a normal human being - Poe, "Trigger Happy Jack"
Sad as it seems _Champ Hood (uncle walt's band)
Sad as it seems
you'll wake and be lonely
through all the night
you'll dream of him only
I talk to you, but you don't hear me
Why can't you see
It's not as sad as it seems
Sad as it seems
your misery surrounds you
I can't seem to break
this silence around you
your heart won't take, this unhappy feeling
But don't feel so low
It's not as sad as it seems
You say you lost someone
you believe in
But why make it hard on yourself
won't you try to love again
Sad as it seems
he's now just a memory
You need to let go
and stop this pretending
what can i do you know that I love you
but if you can't see
then it's sad as it seems
If you can't see
then It's sad as it seems
this one has really unusal metaphors and stuff which is cool
As the Crow Flies- Walter Hyatt
As the crow flies
you can be my baby are you ready
YOu can live in the skies
you can rise on the wings of love
As the cat moves
you can be my woman are you ready
I been sitting to long
right or wrong I'm ready to move
as the crow flies
as the cat moves
i'm a sad bojangles but I'm too young for livin' the blues
As the buck dies
you can be my lover if you hunt me
I will fall int the woods
and the arrow and the goods will be yours
As the river rolls
I will take you to the sea if you want me
I will rock you in the deeP
and sing you to sleep on the shore
As the crow flies
As the cat moves
as the buck dies
as the river rolls
I'm a sad bojangles but I'm too young for the livin' the blues

Indiscipline--King Crimson
I do remember one thing.
It took hours and hours...
by the time I was done with it,
I was so involved,
I didn't know what to think.
I carried it around with me for days and days..
playing little games...
like not looking at it for a whole day
and then.. looking at it.
to see if I still liked it.
I did.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat..
The more I look at it,
the more I like it.
I do think it's good.
The fact is..
no matter how closely I study it,
no matter how I take it apart,
no matter how I break it down,
It remains consistent.
I wish you were here to see it!
I like it!

what is a paper bor (typo error??)
It is actually paper boy:
In other words:
Pictures of people on newspapers that has been delivered by a paper boy. In Britain all the front doors have holes in them where the mail and newspapers are delivered. Once they have passed through the hole, they just fall to the floor.
Hence "the paper holds their folded faces to the floor".

Bright Eyes has some of my favorite lyrics. Here are a few:
"i had a brother once
he drowned in a bathtub before he had ever learned how to talk
and i don’t know what his name was but my mother does
i heard her say it once, padriac my prince i have all but died from the
sheer weight of my shame. you cried but no one came and the water filled your
tiny lungs." -Pedraic my Prince
"i pass a graveyard on my way to work
today i saw two dozen white roses
on a fresh new mound of dirt
and i wondered about the occupant
when the darkness finally swallowed him was he calm and content
or was he sweating in a struggle to keep breathing,
ripping apart the sheets that dressed his bed
crying out loud for someone to help him
and collapsing on his back all pale and dead" -on my way to work
And my all-time favorite line:
"It was in a foreign hotel's bathtub I baptized myself in change
And one by one I drowned all of the people I had been" -From a Balance Beam

Go ahead and bash away but Don Henley can turn a great phrase.
"Same dancers in the same old shoes,
You get too careful with the steps you choose.
You dont care about winning but you dont want to lose
After the thrill is gone...
The flame rises but it soon decends,
Empty pages and a frozen pen.
Your not quite lovers and your not quite friends,
After the thrill is gone....."

Don't know why, but this verse really caught me.
Another one that grabbed me is from an old Daryl Hall and John Oates album "War Babies" the song is 70's Scenario.

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.
Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again.
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes 'round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten, ignorant to the damage done.
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And we're sinking deeper.
Defining, confining, sinking deeper.
Controlling, defining, and we're sinking deeper.
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Lets you choose what you will and will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.
Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.
Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and faded anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold.
Let go.

It's time you songwriting gurus were acquainted with the great Martin Walkyier (ex-Sabbat, ex-Skyclad)...
Youth of our nation - A lost generation
Like lepers we march to the chimes of Big Ben.
Exiled and rejected by powers elected
Our cries from the gutter don't reach number ten.
Give us this day our daily bread
Before the headlines read "bring out your dead."
Chip-wrapper flowers are blown onto this cardboard grave
My spray paint epitaph upon the wall it says...
"Here lies the bones of some poor homeless vagrant
He died as he lived, in the shit on the pavement."
-Skyclad, Cardboard City
[this next one here is dedicated to my man Wes Powell: ]
Commercial suicide's appealing
after ten years on this losing streak.
'Cause I'd rather be called sour and bitter
than be deemed the flavour of the 'weak'.
-Skyclad, Penny Dreadful
I've wandered far (I've wondered hard)
And have one source of comfort only -
When I share my thoughts with you
Mortality is not so lonely.
Countless starts between us -
Myriad the things I miss,
I say farewell and think of home
The static drowns my parting kiss.
Planet Earth is great to visit - It's great to visit
(but you wouldn't want to live there.)
And as your signal slowly wanes -
the fears return (my growing pains),
here it is for what it's worth -
yet another postcard from planet Earth.
-Skyclad, Postcard From Planet Earth
The curtain never falls
On the show that has it all,
Taken in, you can't begin to see their lies,
for the people who are clapping
Are the ones who will be laughing
At your fate, they just can't wait to bleed you dry.
-Sabbat, The Church Bizarre
[and my all time fave...]
Some say I bite the hand that feeds - but to these disillusioned eyes
'tis sweet revenge to watch it bleed (it has only fed me lies),
The dead horses you were flogging could not rise and stand upon its legs,
Behold the leper-minstrel has been cured and nevermore shall beg.

Here's some DEL AMITRI lyrics for you...
Some Other Sucker's Parade
(Currie/McLoughlin)
I must've had a million damn unlucky days
But there ain't no cloud that a bottle can't chase away
I've done my deal of living, ran from place to place
But when the roof comes in I don't wanna take it straight
They say with faith any soul can make it
But hell, why should I wait
'Til the clouds go rain on some other sucker's parade
I've had my share of heartaches, let downs and tricks
But the everyday blues is the one thing I can fix
I've heard those holy brethren muttering my name
But it ain't no sin to drink when you're suffering
Patience, they say, is a saintly virtue
But hell, why should I wait
'Til the clouds go rain on some other sucker's parade
When every heavy sky just empties on your fate
Sometimes keeping dry's something to celebrate
So if the road of sin is the one I'm taking
I ain't gonna stray
'Til the clouds go rain on some other sucker's parade
What I Think She Sees
(Currie)
I've been in this place many times before
With my baby's things among my shoes and strings and clothes
But just because I'm here
Don't mean I can't run out that door
Ain't that what those running shoes are for?
Baby likes to sleep on floor boards bare
And just to keep the peace, well I join her there
And she might say to me
'A better man I can't recall'
But what I think she sees ain't me at all
It ain't me at all to need somebody
Like some lovestruck casualty
It ain't me at all to feel so ready
To be what I think she sees
Baby claims I kiss like I really care
Well, I guess I'd say I don't but the truth ain't fair
And sometimes she looks at me and says
'Babe, my heart just stalled',
But what I think she sees ain't me at all.

God, I could murder a Cadbury's Flake but then they wouldn't let me into heaven -

Johm McRae:
"Well, your CD collection looks shiny and costly.
How much did you pay for your bad Moto Guzi?
And how much did you spend on your black leather jacket?
Is it you or your parents in this income tax bracket?
Now tickets to concerts and drinking at clubs,
Sometimes for music that you haven't even heard of.
And how much did you pay for your rock'n'roll t-shirt
That proves you were there,
That you heard of them first?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
Ah, tell me.
How much did you pay for the chunk of his guitar,
The one he ruthlessly smashed at the end of the show?
And how much will he pay for a brand new guitar,
One which he'll ruthlessly smash at the end of another show?
And how long will the workers keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones.
And how long will the workers keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones.
Aging black leather and hospital bills,
Tattoo removal and dozens of pills.
Your liver pays dearly now for youthful magic moments,
But rock on completely with some brand new components.
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?

Your self-destruction doesn't hurt them.

One of my favorite songs, period. :D
Once, I had the pleasure of covering that song while opening for this stuck-in-the-80s-hair-band-type-of-band called Amazing Grace, and I stared right at their singer the whole time (cause he was wearing a leather jacket, and I thought it was the funniest thing ever).
Anyway, one of my favorite lyrics is off that album, in the song "Pentagram":
Your pentagram is down below our floor.
Your naked body shimmers in the night.
Dancing and chanting in a sacrificial rite.
Your feet are dry with the ashes from dead babies,
Who have passed the test just like all the rest,
But never really understood the reasons why
They took it in the first place.

Song by The Dismemberment Plan:
well i, i am a time bomb and i, i lay forgotten at the bottom of your heart... i'm fine ticking, away the hours to blow your world apart
well i, i am a poison and i, i instill caution in your bloodstream like a ghost, like wine, gathering vintage the day i hurt the most
i, i am a land mine and i, i lay on the soil burned out the battles you thought you'd won, i've got time... to wait for the footprints.. the memory that's on the run...yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
i, i am a tar pit and i, i swell like a living thing all at the slightest touch.. a black grime, yeah, swallowing everything.. a cold and timeless clutch
i, i am a trip wire, and i, i'm stretching across the road you're barreling down tonight...a finished wire, waiting to be released right beyond your sight
i, i am a fault line and i, i'm pulling apart the ground that lay beneath your newest seed.. so fine, moving an inch an hour a caution you won't know, you don't know, you think so (missing word)
well i, i am a time bomb i only live in that one moment in which you die... its not right, its not what i wanted then but you know and i know there's no going back
i, i am a lost soul and i, i send out a sickened light for anyone to see... a cry for help, a warning to stay away.. perverted.. blinded... reaching in darkness....why

just a few selected flickerstick lyrics:
from you're so hollywood:
with designer medications
another valium in the red wine
you're so hollywood
you're so hollywood
talk show host:
the radio
it seems so shady oh
i'll never hear myself just quite the same again
it's overload, in stereo
im sweating like a talk show host tonight
got a feeling:
i got a feeling
it's a feeling that you'll never understand
it's like a rush to my heart
that i hope never ends
because it all depends
it's such a power
a sensation
that it's changing how i feel about you
it's all brand new
the fight is far from over
there's nothing left to lose
direct line to telepathic:
hey, look at me
i'm causing a catastrophe
but i
i just might see
you and me
the excess your own celebration now
execution by x-mas lights:
so get in line
and fortify
its just time to go out
and scream from the top of the moon
one more
time
Life it seems will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
-
Things not what they used to be
Missing One inside of me
Deathly lost this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now He's gone
One of the only songs that gives me the chills every time I listen to it :]

Pig
Isn't it strange
How we move our lives for another day
Like skipping a beat
What if a great wave should
wash us all away
Just thinking out loud
Don't mean to dwell on this dying thing
But looking at blood
It's alive right now
Deep and sweet within
Pouring through our veins
Intoxicate moving wine to tears
Drinking it deep
Then an evening spent dancing
It's you and me
This love will open our world
From the dark side we can see a glow of something bright
There's much more than we see here
Don't burn the day away
Is this not enough
This blessed sip of life
Is it not enough
Staring down at the ground
Oh then complain and pray
more from above
Greedy little pig
Stop just watch your world trickle away
Oh it's your problem now
It'll all be dead and gone in
a few short years
Just love will open our eyes
Just love will put the hope in our minds
Much more than we could ever know
Don't burn the day away
Come sister
my brother
Shake up your bones shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come pouring in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone
Love! love!? what more is there?
We need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There are bad times
But that's ok
Just look for love in it
Don't burn the day away
Look
Here are we
On this starry night staring into space
And I must say
I feel as small as dust
Lying down here
What point could there be troubling
Head down wondering what will
become of me
Why concern we cannot see
But no reason to abandon it
Time is short but that's all right
Maybe I'll go in the middle of the night
Take your hands from your eyes, my love
Everything must end some time
Don't burn the day away
Come sister
My brother
Shake up your bones shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come flooding in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone
Love! love!? what more is there?
We need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There are bad times
But that's ok
Just look for love in it

I don't konw about smartest I ever heard but anything by John Mayer tends to be clever. For example:
And autumn comes
It doesn't ask
It just walks in
would I be satisfied
and find peace inside
rolling half my life
over broken white lines
And if it ever gets bad
I mean stay in bed bad
I'll move to Nova Scotia
Forget the life I had
I'll be up at 9 each morning
Down by the shore
Collecting things that fell off boats in storms
Well ok so I might never
But it's nice to know the option's there

"What do you think of the cool set in London?

Tom Waits:
"It's the tatooed broken promise
I gotta hide beneath my sleeve" from Blue Valentine
and one more that might not be all that smart, but I just have to sing along to when I hear it:
"Let's get married,
In a big cathedral with a priest,
'Cos if I'm the man you love the most

DREAMING TREE
Standing here
The old man said to me
"Long before these crowded streets
Here stood my dreaming tree"
Below it he would sit
For hours at a time
Now progress takes away
What forever took to find
Now he's falling hard
He feels the falling dark
How he longs to be
Beneath his dreaming tree
Conquered fear to climb
A moment froze in time
When the girl who first he kissed
Promised him she'd be his
Remembered mother's words
There beneath the tree
"No matter what the world
You'll always be my baby"
Mommy come quick
The dreaming tree has died
The air is growing thick
A fear he cannot hide
The dreaming tree has died
Oh have you no pity
This thing I do
I do not deny it
All through this smile
As crooked as danger
I do not deny
I know in my mind
I would leave you now
If I had the strength to
I would leave you up
To your own devices
Will you not talk
Can you take pity
I don't ask much
But won't you speak
Please
From the start
She knew she had it made
Easy up 'til then
For sure she'd make the grade
Adorers came in hordes
To lay down in her wake
She gave it all she had
But treasures slowly fade
Now she's falling hard
She feels the fall of dark
How did this fall apart
She drinks to fill it up
A smile of sweetest flowers
Wilted so and soured
Black tears stain the cheeks
That once were so admired
She thinks when she was small
There on her father's knee
How he had promised her
"You'll always be my baby"
"Daddy come quick
The dreaming tree has died
I can't find my way home
There is no place to hide
The dreaming tree has died"
Take me back
Save me please

GREY STREET
Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street
She thinks, "Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dreamed myself a million times around the world,
But I can't get out of this place"
There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together -
To grey
And it breaks her heart
How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears He doesn't listen
There's still a hope in her He might
She says, "I pray
But my prayers fall on deaf ears,
Am I supposed to take it on myself
To get out of this place?"
There's loneliness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together -
To grey
And it breaks her heart
She hears voices from outside her door
Says "take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It'd take the work out of the courage "
But she says, "Please
There's a madman creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street and the end of the world"
There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now
It's more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her
Using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together -
To grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey

Remember the first time I told you I love you
It was raining hard and you never heard
You sneezed, and I had to say it over
"I said 'I love you'" I said...you didn't say a word
Just held your hands to my shining eyes
And I watched as the rain ran through your fingers
Held your hands to my shining eyes and smiled as you kissed me
"If you die," you said, "so do I" you said...
And it starts the day you make the sign
"Tell me I'm forever yours and you're forever mine
Forever mine..."
"If you die," you said, "so do I" you said...
And it starts the day you cross that line
"Swear I will always be yours and you'll always be mine
You'll always be mine
Always be mine..."
Remember the last time I told you I love you
It was warm and safe in a perfect world
You yawned and I had tos ay it over
"I said 'I love you'" I said...you didn't say a word
Just held your hands to your shining eyes
And I watched as the tears ran through your fingers
Held your hands to your shining eyes and cried
"If you die," you said, "so do I" you said...
But it ends the day you see how it is
There is no always forever...just this...
Just this...
"If you die," you said, "so do I" you said
But it ends the day you understand
There is no if...just and
There is no if...just and
There is no if...

How did this get to 9 pages without Matt Johnson (The The)
This guy is by far the best lyricist ever.
On Sex with a stranger
Don't tell me what your name is--
I want your body, not your mind,
I want a feeling, worth paying for before I say goodbye
But as I was talking, I couldn't look her in the eyes,
I just kept wondering,--
How many men unleashed their frustration between her thighs?
There'll be no sleep until the morning
There'll be no lullabys--
'case the devil borrowed my clothes just for tonight--
....
Well I didn't wanna hurt your feelings, honey
but I couldn't suppress my own,
I had to pull myself outta this nosedive
by proving something to myself.
She was lying on her back
with her lips parted.
Squealing like a stuffed pig--
I was going through the motions
faking the emotions,
and wriggling around like lizard in a tin.
On AIDS
Take me by the hands and walk me to the end of the pier.
Run your fingers through my hair,
and tell me what I wanna hear--
Will lies become truths in this face of fading youth
from my scrotum to your womb, --your cradle to my tomb.
I can't give you up, till I've got more than enough.
So infect me with your love--
Nurse me into sickness. Nurse me back to health.
Endow me with the gifts--of the man made world.
Infected
On Love
Then you came back to me and I went down on one knee
With a glint in my eyes and a rose between my teeth
And I pushed out my tongue for you to see
That I'd been dying of a thirst for your company
Then you quenched my loneliness with your tears
And our clothes fell away as we rolled back the years
But we could't deny it because we could not admit it
If our love was too strong to die
Or we were just too weak to kill it
August & September
On Despair
You can't destroy your problems
By destroying yourself
Death is not the answer
For your soul may burn in hell
My memory my fond deceiver
Is turning all my past into pain
While I'm being raped by progress
Tomorrow's world is here to stay
They wouldn't have it any other way
I'm just a symptom of the moral decay
That's gnawing at the heart of the country.
On Time
Well... you didn't wake up this morning,
'cause you didn't go to bed.
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red!
The calendar on your wall -- IS TICKING -- the days off.
This is the day
JUST Damn fine lyrics to a damn fine song
Peeling the skin back from my eyes, I felt surprised
that the time on the clock was the time I usually retired
to the place where I cleared my head of you;
but just for today, i think I'll lie here and dream of you.
I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in,
but if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to SWIM AND pull you out.
A howling wind blows the litter as the rain flows,
as street lamps pour orange colored shapes through your windows,
a broken soul stares through a pair of watering eyes,
uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile...
Uncertain smile
On Religion
If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down by the C.I.A.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome
God belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah
God doesn't even go to church
And God won't send us down to Allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it's sown
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again

I'm not really a big Pantera fan, but...

Okay, maybe not smart, but classic in an early 90's metal kinda way.

Bastard you beat me to it! That lyric is awesome because it doesn't just take one perspective on the bullshit of love.

Danny and I
Spent anther late night over pancakes
Talkin' 'bout soccer
And how every man's just the same.
We made speculation
On the who's and the when's of our futures
And how everyone's lonely
But still we just couldn't complain.
And how we just hate being alone.
Could I have missed my only chance,
And now I'm just wasting my time
By lookin' around
But ya know I know better,
I'm not gonna worry 'bout nothin'.
Cause if the birds and the flowers survive,
Then I'll make it okay.
And given a chance and a rock;
see which one breaks a window.
And see which one keeps me up all night and into the day.
Because I'm so scared of being alone
That I forget what house i live in.
But it's not my job to wait by the phone
For her to call.
Well this day's been crazy
But everything's happened on schedule,
from the rain and the cold
To the drink that I spilled on my shirt.
'Cause You knew how You'd save me
before I fell dead in the garden,
And You knew this day
long before You made me out of dirt.
And You know the plans that You have for me
And You can't plan the end and not plan the means
And so I suppose I just need some peace,
Just to get me to sleep.

Conor Oberst, 21 years old, of Bright Eyes, is quite brilliant for his age. Check these out. They're way better sung, but oh well. This isn't the whole song, just a tidbit.
from the album "Fevers and Mirrors"
Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh
[...]
I sing and sing of awful things
The pleasure that my sadness brings
As my fingers press unto the strings
Yet another clumsy chord
Haligh, haligh, an awful lie
This weight will now be satisfied
I'll give you only one reply: I KNOW NOT WHO I AM!
But I talk in the mirror to the stranger that appears
Our conversations are circles
Always one-sided
Nothing is clear
Except we keep coming back
To this meaning that I lack
He says, "The choices were given"
"Now you must live them"
"...or just not live"
"But do you want that?"
[...]
Stephen Lynch:
Lullaby
------------
Hush little girl, sweet sweet baby don't cry tonight
Daddy is here and he'll sing you a soft lullaby tonight
Why can't it all be like it was before?
How can I explain why mommy's not here anymore?...
.
.

.
.

.
'Cause daddy likes porno and ten dollar whores
Daddy gets wasted and robs liquor stores
Daddy likes rubbing against little boys on the bus
I think that's why your mommy left us
Hush little girl, there is no reason to fret tonight
Don't mind the smoke, daddy just wants to forget...[cough]...tonight
Soon it will all be like it was before
Any minute she will walk through that front door
But daddy plays poker and drinks lots of beer
Then he wants sex that involves mommy's rear
Daddy has sores on his naughty parts oozing with puss
I think that's why your mommy left us
Please don't cry
I swear I'll try
To be here by your side...
Right after daddy gets home from the bar
Visits his bookie and steals a new car
He'll drive to the strip club
And if daddy plays his cards right,
He'll bring home your new mommy tonight

Bruce Springsteen is not the most prolific songwriter of all time IMO but he's pretty solid overall. One of the strongest stanzas in any song I've ever heard came from the Boss in the song "Badlands"...
Poor man wanna be rich
Rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied until he rules everything.
Also agree with the poster a few pages back who posted Billy Joel's "Angry Young Man" - excellent tune. Also "The Pretender" by Jackson Browne - very deep. Way too many to mention really.

I think in the tumult of everyone rushing to find their most treasured and obscure lyric, you've overlooked some obvious stuff.
Counting Crows - Anything from 'August and Everything After'.
Spin Doctors - Various, but mostly "Shinbone Alley" and "How Could You Want Him?"
Lyle Lovett - If I Were The Man You Wanted.
... but, just to prove that I wanted to be obscure as well ...

Good to see lots of Bob Dylan in here. I'll just post some more.
The Times Are A-Changin'
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
Subterreanean Homesick Blues
Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten
Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows
Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters
Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles
Like a Rolling Stone
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Desolation Row
They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row
Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You Belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row
Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row
Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row
Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
"Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row
Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get Outa Here If You Don't Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row"
Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row
Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody's shouting
"Which Side Are You On?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row
Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Don't send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them

the second part of Peter Hammill's " The Future Now":
(.........)
Oh, blind, blinded, blinding hatred
of race, sex, religion, colour, country and creed,
these scream from the pages of everything I read.
You just bring me oppression and torture,
apartheid, corruption and plague;
you just bring me the rape of the planet
and joke world rights at the Hague.
Oh, someday the Millennium!
But how far is someday away?
I want the future now
I'm young, and it's my right.
I want a reason to be proud.
I want to see the light.
I want the future now,
I want to see it on the screen,
I want to break the bounds:
make life worth more than dreams.
(end)
When i'm a little anbgry I LOVE to play and sing this song just for myself, a good piano patch on the keyboard, the right volume....
at the end , some scars in the vocal strings!!!!!!

so tell me about the lovers on the corner
you eveasdrop on while you fry your brain
while the insects wrestle with their lullabyes
and the neighbors grow loud and insane
but you just mention how you favor foreign pictures
it's your favorite way to watch the world collapse
and how every year you try to quit being human
but you feel stupid and a day later you relapse
- geronimo rex - "preaching to the dead"
you inhale the cancer
and watch the smoke rings jump like little dancers
your eyes pale
dressed as ballerinas
harder and harder to follow
you try to focus on one word at a time
but they just keep rushing by
confused remember how you always knew
when it was going to rain
- geronimo rex - "rapture"
when the sky's had its seizure
and the shadows have possessed the hours
and our words have escaped and passed away
i fall in love with the winter rain again
and the night paces on back and forth outside
you're always so silent when i stare at it
you say i'm paranoid i'm plastic
but you can't avoid me
can't peel yourself away
and i can't explain myself to myself

Guilt and Regret they are my two inbred brothers
Guilt and Regret
Oh god how I hate them both from the bottom of my heart
Guilt and Regret and me wake up into a brand new day
Guilt and Regret lively
I am still dead tired-the night has been long and hard
My brothers they ask me:
"Do you recall anything from yester-night, no?"
They laugh at me and go:
"Nothing at all? Well it must have been an evening of joy."
Guilt and Regret
Oh god how I hate them both from the bottom of my heart.
My brothers they ask me:
"Do you recall anything from yester-night, no?"
They laugh at me and go:
"Nothing at all? Well it must have been an evening of joy."
My brothers they tease me:
"Do you remember anything from yester-night, no?"
They laught at me and go:
"O sure you do, we buried our little sister Hope."
Guilt and Regret and me - what a twisted family we are
Guilt and Regret
Oh god, how I hate you both from the bottom of my heart.

i think that lou reed's got some great lyrics, a couple of my favorites:
--pale blue eyes:
"sometimes I feel so happy
sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
but mostly you just make me mad
baby, you just make me mad"
--sweet jane:
"ridin' in a stutz bearcat, jim
you know those were different times
oh, all the poets they studied rules of verse
and those ladies they rolled their eyes"
i always though the first line of the stooges "search and destroy" was great:
"i'm a street walkin' cheeta with a heart full of napalm,
i'm a run-away son of the nuclear a-bomb"
guided by voices has a ton of great lines, but i always liked this lyric from their song "echos myron"
"'if it's right you can tell' echos myron like a siren with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up but we're a very heavy load"

To me one of the most brilliant lyrics that was ever written was by Neil Peart from the song Losing It off of the album Signals.
Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we'd like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it

Amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
We watched the tragedy unfold
We did as we were told
We bought and sold
It was the greatest show on earth
But then it was over
We ohhed and aahed
We drove our racing cars
We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry no feelings left

Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
Anymore
Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
Want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their
Home, and I'm welcome no more
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn't ask)
Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one, da ...
Oh, I haven't got one
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
Oh, There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out

Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different - because it's us
Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care
Kiss My Shades
Hand in glove
The Good People laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care
Kiss My Shades ... oh ...
So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath
For the Good Life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer
But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
Oh ...

Hey, for just plain cleaver writing:
"Here we are again, just face to facing each other, another day..."
But for substance and content:
"Am I sorry your sky went black? Put your knifes in babys backs. Am I sorry you killed the Kennedys, and Huxley too? But I'm sorry Shakespere was your scapegoat, and your apple's sticking into my throat. Sorry your sunday smiles are rusted nails and your crusifixion commercials failled. I'm sure I'll get falmed for this one, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned any Smiths lyrics - Morrissey may be a silly queen, bt he's abrilliant lyricist at times...
"Poor old man
He had an "accident" with a three-bar fire
But that's OK
Because he wasn't very happy anyway
Poor woman
Strangled in her very own bed as she read
But that's OK
Because she was old and she would have died anyway "
-Sweet and Tender Hooligan
"A sad fact widely known
The most impassionate song
To a lonely soul
Is so easily outgrown
...But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you..."
-Rubber Ring
"It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all "
-That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
"Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you) "
-I know It's over
"The monkish monsignor
With a head full of plaster
Said : "My man, get your vile soul dry-cleaned"
As Rose counts the money in the cannister
As natural as Rain
He dances again

When I was a boy I used to live in corduroy
OP shirts and slip-on Vans.
My life was so simple
I had not one pimple,
My everyday was made up of these plans:
To ride my bike to Thrifty's,
Run past the balls and ice cream and
find the Star Wars figurines.
Thinking of my action men,
Kung-Fu grip and all,
What happened to them all?
(Chorus)
Running through my old life
Looking for my lost toys
Where has all my fun gone?
Now that we're all older
Before we grow much colder
Let's all look forward to the new dawn
An anthem for all lost toys
Now that we're all big boys
We'll stand together and sing this song
We'll sing this song
It's not too long
So everybody sing along
When I was a little man
Playdough came in a little can
I was Star Wars' biggest fan
Now I'm stuck without a plan
GI Joe was an action man
Shaggy drove the mystery van
Devo was my favorite band
Take me back to my happy land
Now my brothers and sisters
I don't mean to make a scene
But I lost my action figures
and it makes me want to scream
Greedo, Chewbacca, Luke, R2, and Han,
3PO, Yoda, Bobafett, Obi Wan
Green Machine, Suckerman
Silly Putty, Lincoln Logs
Sitting in my Underoos
Reading christmas catalogs
What happened to my action men and all?
What happened to it all?
Running through my old life
Looking for my lost toys
Where has all my fun gone?
Now that we're all older
Before we grow much colder
Let's all look forward to the new dawn
An anthem for all lost toys
Now that we're all big boys
We'll stand together and sing this song
We'll sing this song

Somebody once asked David Bowie what he most hated in other people. "Talent." he replied. And in that vein, how about the lyrics for a cover version of Walk Away Renee by Billy Bragg. Legendary guitarist Wilco was playing on one of Bragg's studio sessions, and in between takes was playing an acoustic version of the Motown classic "Walk Away Renee". They kept the tape running, and OVERNIGHT Bragg wrote the following lyrics to go with it:
"Walk Away Renee"
She said it was just a figment of speech
And I said you mean 'figure'
And she said no 'figment' because she could never imagine it happening
But it did
When we first met, I played the shy-boy
And when she spoke to me for the first time, my nose began to bleed
She guessed the rest
The next day we went on a bus ride to the ferry
And when nobody came to collect our fares, well I knew then this was something special
I couldn't stop thinking about her
And everytime I switched on the radio, there was somebody else singing a song about the two of us
It was just like being on a fast ride at Fun Fair- the sort you want to get off
because it's scary and then, as soon as you're off, you want to get straight back on again
But oh love is strange
And you have to learn to take the crunchy with the smooth I suppose
She began going out with Mr. Potato Head
It was when I saw her in the car park with his coat around her shoulders
I realized
I went home and thought about the two of them together until the bath water went cold around me
I thought about her eyes and the curve of her breasts and about the point where their bodies met
I confronted her about it
I said 'I'm the most illegible bachelor in town'
And she said 'Yea, that's why I can never understand any of those silly letters you send me'
And then one day it happened
She cut her hair
And I stopped loving her.
Meanwhile the rest of us have to substitute hard work for talent.
Regards, Aristeas

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Waiting for someone to show you the way
Time and lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you fine- ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run...
You missed the starting gun

That's exactly what they attacked when a typically
dark skinned Disney villain
Used civilians against civilians and charged the trojan
horses into our buildings.
Using commercial aviation as instruments of
destruction,
Pregnant women couldn't protect their children.
Wheelchairs were stairway obstructions.
Now I have to back petal...from the shower of glass
and metal,
Wondering how after it settles we'll find who provided
power to radical rebels.
The Melting Pot seems to be calling the kettle black
when it boils over,
But only on our own soil so the little boy holds a toy
soldier...
And waits for the suit and tie to come home. We won't
wait 'til he's older,
Before we destroy hopes for a colder war to end.
"Now get a close up of his head..."

Makeshift Patriot
The Flag Shop is Out of Stock
I hang myself while the stock markets crash
The city is covered in inches of muck
I see some other pictures of victims are up
Grieving mothers are thinking their children are stuck
Leaping lovers are making decisions to jump
While holding hands...to escape the brutal heat.
Sometimes in groups of the three.
The fall out goes far beyond the toxic cloud where
people look like debris.
But all they saw after all was said...beyond the talking
heads
Was bloody dust with legs looking like the walking
dead calling for meds.
Hospitals are overwhelmed. volunteers need to go the
hell home.
Moments of silence for fire fighters were interupted
by cell phones.
Who's going to make that call to increase an unknown
death toll?
It's the one we rally behind. He's got a
megaphone...and he's promising to make heads roll,
So we cheer him on, but espestos is affecting our
breath control.
The less we know...the more they fabricate...the
easier it is to sell souls
An addictive 24 hour candle light vigil in TVs.
Freedom WILL be defended...at the cost of civil
liberties.
Viewers are glued to television screens.
Stuck...'cause lots of things seem too sick.
I use opportunities to pluck heart strings for theme
music.
I'll show you which culture to punp your fist at and
what foot is right to kiss.
We don't know who the culprit is yet...but he looks
like this.
We know who the heros are. Not the xenophobes who
act hard,
"We taught that dog to squat. How dare he do that
@#%$ in our own back yard!"
They happened to scar our financial state and char
our landscape.
Can you count how many times so far I ran back this
same damn tape?
While a camera man creates news and shoves it
down our throats on the West Bank,
With a 10 second clip put on constant loop to provoke
US angst.
So get your tanks and load your guns and hold your
sons in a family huddle,
Because even if we win this tug of war and even the
score...humanity struggles.
There's a desperate need of blood for what's been
uncovered under the rubble,
Some of them dug for answers in the mess...but the
rest were looking for trouble.

How about these about dreams:
What a dream I had....
.....
And when you ran to me, your
Cheeks fleshed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand
And when I awoke
And felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair
With my grateful tears
Oh, I love you girl
Oh, I love you
Simon and Garfunkel
They’ll come true
Impossible not to do
Impossible not to do
Now I tell you openly
You have my heart so don’t hurt me
You’re what I couldn’t find
Totally amazing mind
So understanding and so kind
You’re everything to me
All my life
Is changing every day
In every possible way
And oh my dreams
It’s never quite as it seems
Cause you’re a dream to me
Dream to me
The Cranberries
There is nothing that should ever take your heart away from what it is you
wanna do
You should always go with what cha love don't follow no one else just do what's
good for you
Tell em
Dreams are real, all you have to do is just believe

Four...ooooooor each other.
Yeah cool lyrics.. but how about:
Well, I dreamed I saw the silver
Space ships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun,
There were children crying
And colors flying
All around the chosen ones.
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun.
They were flying Mother Nature's
Silver seed to a new home in the sun.
Flying Mother Nature's
Silver seed to a new home.

BIRDS
-----
Lover, there will be another one
Who'll hover over you beneath the sun
Tomorrow see the things that never come
Today
When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It's over, it's over.
Nestled in your wings my little one
This special morning brings another sun
Tomorrow see the things that never come
Today
When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It's over, it's over.

When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look, but it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it. Now the child has grown. The dream is gone.
I don't even NEED to say what that's from. :)

I remembered another one.. very intelligent words.. actually the whole song is... and yes I like Simon and Garfunkel ;)
"Fools," said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence"

Here's a bunch of my favorites:
Terrified of Telephones and shopping malls and knives
Drowning in the pools of other lives
Rely a bit too heavily on alcohol and irony get clobbered on by courtesy
In love with love and lousy poetry
And I'm leaving on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it almost feels ok
--Aside, The Weakerthans
I do not see you standing still that statue that I molded in my mind to kiss so beautiful you'd never move again
--Without Mythologies, The Weakerthans
Some far away place, some sad table littered with chip plates, in bad light, in 48 frames of the movie on the cutting room floor you said true meaning would be dying with you.....
And though I wanted to.....
I did not smile.
--Without Mythologies, The Weakerthans
Garage sale saturday I need to pay
My heart's outstanding bills
Cracked up compass and a pocketwatch
Some plastic daphodils
Cutlery and coffee cups I stole from all night restaurants
A sense of wonder only slightly used a year or two to haunt you in the dark
For a phone call from far away
With a hi, how are you today?
And a sign of recovery comes
To the broken ones
--Everything Must Go, The Weakerthans
My city is still breathing but barely it's true
Through buildings gone missing like teeth
--Left and Leaving, The Weakerthans
Wish I had a socket set to dismantle this morning
Just one pair of clean socks, and a photo of you
--My Favourite Chords, The Weakerthans
Around these parts
If I could live
If I could live 1,000 years
But the man cannot descend enough
If you would live
A smiling drunkness and a glass of milk
Goes with a piece of raisin bread
Only to catch the noise I hear
Loudly
A scalpy ketchup bottle and a two dollar bill
I guess it's time to pay the bill
But you know I never will, I'm hungry still
--When Good Dogs Do Bad Things, Mike Patton With Dillinger Escape Plan
Istanbul was constantinople
Now it's istanbul not constantinople
Been a long time gone, constantinople
Why did constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the turks
--Istanbul, They Might Be Giants
And I will close with possibly the greatest most perverse lyrics ever!
Hey there people I'm Bobby Brown
They say I'm the cutest boy in town
My car is fast, my teeth are shiny
I tell all the girls that they can kiss my hiny
Here I am at a famous school
I'm dressing sharp and I'm acting cool
Gotta cheerleader here wants to help with my paper
Let her do all the work and maybe later I'll rape her
OH GOD I AM THE AMERICAN DREAM!
I do not think I am too extreme
And I'm a handsome sonofabitch
Gonna get a good job and be real rich!
Women's liberation
Came sweeping all across the nation
I tell you people I was not ready
When I fucked this by the name of freddy
She made a little speech then
She tried to make me say when
She had my balls in a vice but she left the dick
I guess it's still hooked on but now it shoots too quick
OH GOD I AM THE AMERICAN
But now I smell like vaseline
And I'm a miserable sonofabitch
Am I a boy or a lady I don't know which
So I went out and bought me a leisure suit
I jingle my change but I'm still kinda cute
Got a job doing radio promo
And none of the jocks can even tell I'm a homo
Eventually me and a friend
Sort of drifted along into s&m
I can take about an hour on the tower of power
As long as I gets a little golden shower
OH GOD I AM THE AMERICAN DREAM
with a spindle up my butt til it makes me scream
And I'll do anything to get ahead
I lay awake at nights saying thank you fred
OH GOD OH GOD I'M SO FANTASTIC
Thanks to freddy I'm a sexual spastic
And my name is bobby brown
Watch me now, I'm going down.

I was taught a month ago
To buy my time and take it slow.
But then I learned just yesterday
To rush and never waste the day.
Now I'm convinced the whole day long
That all I learn is always wrong
And things are true that I forget
But no one taught that to me yet.

hollywood glamorized my wrath
i'm a young urban psychopath
i incite murder for your entertainment
cause i needed the money... what's your excuse?
the joke's on you
Third Eye Blind - "Slow Motion"
i read dead russian authors
volumes at a time
i write everything down except what's on my mind
cause my greatest fear is the sucking sound
and then i know i'll never get back out
and there's a bone in my hand
that connects to a drink
in a crowded room, where the glasses clink
and i'll buy you a beer and we'll drink it deep
because that keeps me from falling asleep
Third Eye Blind - "Narcolepsy"
and now it's fall and your shoulders get tighter
nervous flicks on your lighter, boots
your pissed off poets
your women's groups
and the friends with you we should have known this fool
well, i guess i missed the mark
but my fingers catch the sparks
at the thought of touching you
Third Eye Blind - "Wounded"
i can't forget the smell
of summer trees after midnight
they're bendin' backwards to please the wind
you touched the tattoo of the sun
on a warm belly that once
carried a baby for a while
and let that crackled leather jacket round you fold
red faced saints monogrammed in gold
and in this beauty, i would not go any further
cause i suddenly remembered...
we can't live this way forever

Some of my favorites:
In any bar any place,
Where working men meet.
Hey boys this rounds on me,
Man that jukebox sounds so sweet.
I got some change lets shoot some stick,
Straight in no slop,
Man this beers going down so nice,
Rack 'em up I'm feeling hot.
Welcome to ...
The heart of a miracle.
Welcome to ...
The heart of a miracle.
...She told me to come but I was already there...
Beautiful loser
Where you gonna fall?
When you realize
You just can't have it all
