why two amps??

Hi guys, I was wondering why someone as Mark tremonti and some other players the names escaped from me are using two heads in a Rack. I'am busy find out what the best racksystem is for me and looking around who everything is connected. I think the part for me what I really interested is for is how it is connected. I someone can tell the reasons why they using 2 of the same amplifiers. I can imagine to use a dual rectifier and en Fender. But two dual/triple rectifiers and a fender:confused: Well, help me with this.

Well, I don't have a set-up like that:( But, I should guess the main reason for using more than one of the same amp in a rig is EQ possibilities. Sure, there are amps out there that are more versatile maybe, but what do you do if you really like the sound of one particular amp and that amp doesn't have a lot of different EQ's on it? In this case, you use more than one amp, allowing for the same amp sound with different EQ settings so you don't have to compromise anything.

Actually they are using them for backup. When you're out on tour for months at a time, putting on shows every night that people are paying BIG BUCK$ to see, if you have one break down, you better have another ready to go in a hurry - just plug it in and go. I know lots of guys in local bands that will bring something like a POD or a Sansamp with them in base they have amp problems.

Other people use some pretty intricate switching systems to use different amps for different sounds - like say between a Rectifier and a Roland, or a Marshall and a Fender. Different tones for different songs, ya know? Heck - Metallica even does that! :)

I like to have a backup for everything, and I agree that when you're a national-level band playing 10,000 capacity venues, if your amp breaks, you'd damn well better have another one, and fast! Local shows are usually over when the amp quits working. If you paid $80 bucks to see that band and the guitar amp quit after two songs, you'd not expect them to say "Sorry guys, no guitar amp! Thank you, good night!"

I also try to always carry some kind of backup with me, although I'm not at a level where I can afford a couple poweramps and duplicates of all my effects. However, I always try to arrange for a backup bass, I've got a ton of cables in my rack drawer (among a thousand other things), two cabinets, and I only use one channel on my poweramp so in case of a problem, I can swap. Obviously if the amp thermals I have a problem, but that's what the D.I. is for!

We played a show at a 250 person place and about three songs in, my poweramp (an old Peavey, no less!) burned. Literally, there was fire. The fog machine wouldn't turn off behind the stage, and no one could see a damn thing. The fire managed to short something out in my rack, causing the breaker to trip in my power conditioner (and probably saving a lot of equipment). My preamp, which was connected directly to the poweramp via a female AC plug on the back of the amp, also gave up the ghost. My D.I. was built into my preamp. That put me in a situation where I had no stage sound (mic'ed amps) and no fuckin' idea what to do to get it back. I ended up plugging my bass directly into the guitarist's EQ pedal, into my compressor, which had an XLR output, and sending that directly to the snake. Boy was that a nasty sound for the rest of the show... but it was a sound!

I can't think of any one piece of equipment that could blow and wipe me out for the rest of the gig. But I'm using rack components, not Rectifier heads. If one of those dies, you can't just troubleshoot it or go around it on the spot. If it powers up for soundcheck but not for the show, you've got to have an immediate fix while you troubleshoot the first one... and that solution is to turn the head off, rip out the speaker cables, and plug them into the backup head. :)

I might be mistaken, but I think I read somewhere that he gets one distorted tone from a Dual Rectifier and another from a Triple Rectifier. If thats the case then one is a 2-channel Dual and the other is a 2-channel Triple.

guys there are lots of reasons to use 2 amps

another one not mentioned is that let's say you love the tone of your amp but you want to run a stereo rig. in a stereo rig you most likely will only need one preamp but two power sections. so you can either run your favorite amp head on a load and then out thru a stereo power amp, or you can buy two of your favorite amp and use the preamp from one, but the power section of both after going through your rack gear. this way both sides of the stereo rig sound exactly alike

Why does Tremonti have two amps or why do players use two (or more) amps especially when they are the same type of amp? Well, not just for backup but often for different sounds. Bear in mind that even given muliple channel amps, only one channel sounds the way that it does. What if you have a 3 channel amp but the 3rd channel is the one that you prefer for both your rhythm and lead tones but with very different gain and eq settings? You get two of those amps and have one set for rhythm and one for lead and you switch between the two. Many players do this. It also gives you a backup amp and a stereo rig. If you look at some of the guitar geek rigs they will list what amp is being used for what. You will see things like:

Marshall 2204 (rhythm)
Marshall 2204 (lead)
Marshall 2204 (backup)

Tremonti also has 2 or 3 more rectos on stage with him. I've also seen him using some kind of Fender. Most likely for cleans.
