Yow all,

My current setup is:
POD Pro
Mesa Boogie Recording Pre (which im selling)
BBE Sonic Max
Behringer 2x31 Band EQ
Mesa 2:90 (being fixed after it died)

and a marshall cab 1960B

I want to improve my sound. Think meshuggah if anyone knows them. A really tight sound. I like the tightness of the POD on some settings - v chunky but it can sound a bit harsh and digital.

Im thinking of swappign the 1960B with an Engl cab - do they have stronger bass as my 1960B farts alottt? ( I don't want a mesa cab - mainly cos of the nu-metal image but if i had to resort to it then maybe)

Triaxis or dual recto? I have a rack rig so i want to stay that way to save £. Does the triaxis have a nice tight sound or is the recto better? Which ever i got i'd have to get a G-Major for effects dam it.

Don't know how much closer to a meshugguh sound you can get than with line6, which is what they were using the last I heard :D Maybe you could try ditching the BBE for awhile and see how that goes. I liked my POD Pro when I had it. I eventually sold it to get a VHT GP3 which I'm happy with, but the POD Pro was bang for the buck and I reckon it'll do you good with abit of tweaking. Do you use cabinet simulations? I found that turning off cab sim made it sound a LOT more alive. And also playing with the cabinet tuning modes

By the way what's wrong with the G-major? I'm loving mine

Yeah they use POD Pro's now ut fredrik thordendal is a sound genius. i got exact sound i want on recordings but live it seems a bit weird. they go direct into PA (meshuggah) which ive done but i prefer a cab really - tho i might start doing that again im not sure :s

i want the g-major! but thats £400 then £130ish for a floorboard...need a new cab first as my marshall cant handle it at loud volumes :s just farts like an elephant on curry.

Oh btw the POD with cab sim off is horrible! i use it for my clean sound but with distortion its really harsh.

Have you tried taking the back off of your Marshall Cab, and working on it? Usually, if you place a piece of Rubber between the brace post, and the back, it will take care of the "Farts" that you're Experienceing. Most of the time, the noise you're hearing, is the back, vibrating against that post.

It seems that some 290 are dying frequently later.

Are you sure you know how to take care of it ?
Did you turn it on without connecting it into a cabinet or something ?

biuje:

yeah i know how to take of it, all though it is my first valve amp. its a 1996 one. the valve sockets are arcing or something apparerntly- it died during a sound check at a gig! i usually run it in stereo but with the band i was playing with i used mono and i think I mite have made an error and used the wrong ohmage which is somethign ive never done before but soundcheck was a rush until it died. i turned the other channel off though.

Ska_o_matic:

The recording pre is well nice its just not my style. the clean is lush!! ots amazing - nice compressed tight sound...and when u play open chords on the distortion that is lush ...i just like a really tight DJENT DJENT - meshuggah style palm mute which it doesnt have (any ideas :s ?) just not my thing is all - other wise its a great preamp. tis brand new pretty much - u interested in buying at all ?

marshall freak:
i have modded it by deeping the cab (added an extra 3 inchs to back and added foam inside and too the back panel - the post i think is more secure with the foam) any other ideas cos id like to run two cabs anyway ?

any one got an engl cab or know what they're like?

I just got my second ENGL 4x12" standard cab and I love them !!!;)
I went with the standard 'cabs 'couse I have learned to hate the v-30ś. :D
The ENGL cabs absolutely demolish my old shitty Marshalls.

Was thinking of using them as canoes from now on....

Anybody who's got a pair of really bad strats ???
Would be cool to use as paddles. !:D

Weird. The manual says : leave the level of the unused channel at 0; you know. I don´t trust that method !

That's funny I found that with the cab sim on my sound became REALLY processed and muffled sounding. But then I like a brighter heavy tone :) Whatever works for you man.

As cool as that is vince, I suspect it's a little off topic. I can't remember when the last time I heard a band that fit the description given by acle, using a CAE 3+ was. Actually I think it was never.

Regardless I've always wanted one of those for myself :D
But the price and waiting time have put me off totally

what version of the POD chip do you have? mines 1.3 which ive only just updated - isnt there a 1.4 ?

cab sim off on the 1.2 was cack but it isnt as harsh on the 1.3 - id ned to try it live with a band praccy - im only going thru a shit marshal combo - mesa stil dead - waiting for valves to come.

cockrocker:
wikked man, what speakers do they have in them then :s ? is the standard cab the 240ish Watt thing? oo and does it have stereo inputs. does it have good low end ? as in non farty?

does anyone use a normal mixer with-in their rig? i have a cak 4trak mixer and im thinking of using it to use two preamps together (and an A/B to select between the two). maybe if i just taped it heavily to the bottom 2U of my rack case :s ?( i dont have enuff £ for any of the like things designed for this job - spending on cabs n stuff first.)

Hey Acle,

I heard a lot of your clips (also from the meshforum), and think you'll definitely have to check out the Marshall JMP-1 and the TriAxis.

Listen to some of these songs from some friends of mine (Meshuggah style) to hear the TriAxis in Action.

http://www.textures.nl/home.htm (under 'download')

Signal line on these recordings was:

Ibanez Universe -> TriAxis -> MesaBoogie Strategy 400 -> Marshall 1960A -> Lots of different Mics and preamps (8!) -> Digidesign 001 -> Protools (Mac)

at live-gigs both the guitarists use JMP-1's (TriAxis is too fragile)
One of 'em with abovementioned Strategy 400 and the other with a Marshall 9200

check it out and lemme hear what you think!

Oh, and Maarten (tubefreak) used a cheap Behringer 1U rackmixer once in his setup...
maybe it's still on www.tubefreak.com

Try and ENGL preamp, or maybe a modded MP-1. I play alot of Meshuggah stuff, I get a pretty close tone to theirs with my Mp-1s.

You have modded mp-1's, right? With wich mod are you getting similar Mesh tones?

Man the 3.666 sounds EXACTLY like my old dual rectifer. I was amazed at how well they nailed the tone of the mesa.

oops sorry I read that mesa tone not mesh.....

I'm using a combo of a 3.1 mod and the 3TM mod together at the same time.
