Just run a cable from the output on the back of your computer to the in on your vcr or tv if it has one.

yeah, ok. That's not going to work if there isn't a tv-out jack on his video card.

Most TVs are terrible as monitors, unless you're all you want to do with your monitor is watch videos. They have poor resolution, and don't work well with narrow lines, like the ones you're reading right now.
The exception might be some of the high-end HDTV monitors, that have digital inputs. Some have VGA in, while one of the Sony HDTV sets actually has firewire video-in.
