I've got a quick question for ya. I have a rat shack dj mixer that has an input for a record player. Like most phono-ins, it's preamped to accept the typical low-level signal from a turntable. What can I do to make my phono-in compatible with a normal line level from a CD or minidisc deck? Are there any adapters available or anything? Thanks.
Joe.

Nothing really, there's more involved than just gain staging. Records are recorded using the RIAA curve, because of the analog nature of a record, and in this case I mean analog as in analogous, you can't represent true sine waves properly because bass frequencies wouldn't fit on the record, or at least not nearly as many, records would be about five minutes per side or so. The solution is/was to use a logarithmic curve against the music, so you cut the bass frequencies WAY down and boost the hell out of the high frequencies. The phono pre 'knows this', so it automatically tries to undo that, this levels aside, the phono inputs will not give you the results you are expecting.

Most mixers have a switch between phono and line, or separate inputs. Get one of those.
