where can i get some? Like guitar rig or amplitube but free. I never seem to have a practice amp around anymore and I think going with software could be super versatile and fun for practice.

This one is called Fretted Synth, it works. You might need a VST host though, I cant remember:

I have some blog posts about free amp software. Head to my blog and use the search widget, you'll get plenty of links to keep you busy.

It's getting to be time to do another freeware update, there have been some nice releases in the meantime. Lots of stuff from AcmeBarGig, more LePou stuff, and Aradaz is back from his coding hiatus and providing more things.

One more recent development you definitely want to check out is from Auraplugs, they recently released another in their "freetortion" series of plugins. The last one was a great-sounding freeware Digitech Wammy simulator that really nails its functionality and also has a good distortion available, but the most recent one is a very nice sounding Mesa amp sim. They have five freetortion plugins so far and they all sound great, but the most recent two really push the limits for them.

I have to give a vote for acmebargigs amp sims..Im liking the new Dickhead,Meathead,PeckerHead amps. Each has a dallas arbiter rangemaster modeled trebel booster that sounds pretty good when kicked in.

Couple VST that I've been playing with :
TLR A 110 - no documentation - you gotta play around with it to get the tones you look for - 4 tiny buttons at the right change the character, 3rd one down is high-gain

Dirthead - mehhhhh . . .

FA-3 - can be really nice, again, you have to play with it for hours to dial-in

California Sun - one trick pony for the Mesa tone - very nice

Juicy 77 - nice clean tones here
