I've been on the fence for a while about getting a guitar synth, and now that Carvin sells them, I'm leaning more towards buying one. My problem is that I don't really know where to start as far as the other stuff I'd need to buy. I know I would need some type of processor, but I have no idea which one to get for what I want. I'll give a few examples of what I'd like to do with the guitar, and what I don't need. I'm not looking for "synth" sounds, but would like to sound like a few instruments besides guitar. I'd like to be able to sound like various woodwind or brass instruments, piano, organ, and a few stringed instruments (violin, cello, sitar, banjo, maybe a classical guitar). Is there one unit out there that is better suited for this?

Well, Carvin sells controllers that allow you to connect their guitar to a third party module that is either a synth or sampler or that sort of thing.

It doesn't have any internal synthesizer circuitry, I'm not aware of any
instruments that do have internal synthesizer or sampler circuitry.

That being said, there are a number of third party boxes by Roland and
Axon that allow pitch-to-midi that would allow what you want.

I'm thinking some kind of sampler or the like.

As far as sitar and banjo sounds, the Roland VG99 has spot-on emulations
of these instruments with no tracking delay, you can do cello-like sounds
with it as well as a nylon string guitar.

Check out some of the demonstrations of the VG99 online, it sounds like
that might be more to your liking since it can do nylon/steel guitar sounds,
sitar sounds, banjo sounds, 12-string guitar sounds, etc.

It might better be thought of as a multi-processor/emulator on steroids.
