Can I just say that I don't hate eBay? I've only used it infrequently but it's always been fine for me.

Never sold anything on eBay, but I buy gear off there all the time. Never had a problem.

eBay is a great Reality Check. It keeps the dealers honest. And all those "collectors" who were hoarding Kays, Harmonys and other junk are finding out what they're really worth. I've bought and sold a couple of dozen instruments on eBay, including some high-dollar ones. Every deal was fair and a lot less hassle than the alternatives.
Yes eBay absolutely sucks compared to how it used to work. It’s completely out of control. As a buyer it is slow and buggy from all the ads, scripts, and “features” that I don’t want or need. Searching/browsing is much, much slower than it was even a couple years ago, and just pathetic compared to how things were in 2001 when I started.
As a buyer I get tired and give up much sooner searching for items because it loads so slowly. As a seller I know fewer people are going to find my items for the same reason.
They changed the listing tool to make it easier for idiots that don’t know anything about HTML, and it takes 5 times as long to list something as it used to. I’m a private seller, so I’m not interested in tools offered by outside vendors to make listing easier. I’m paying eBay to list, so I expect them to provide the proper tools and ease of use.
They are also rude, unresponsive and difficult to contact in the first place. The reps are stupid and know less about how eBay works than I do. I have to inform them of eBay policy and direct them to transfer me to divisions they don’t even know they can until I tell them.
After I had a major conflict with rude first line support person a couple years ago I told them to connect me with their legal department or my next call would be to my state Attorney General, who just so happens to love going after eBay for their many abuses. They finally gave me the number to the office of the President of eBay, so I have direct access now. I finally got to talk to someone with an IQ greater than a carrot, but that was more difficult than getting an audience with the Wizard of Oz.
I don’t list or buy as much as I used to. I wish there were another option on the web more like the old eBay. I like the auction format and the Buy-it-Now and all that.
I have 100% feedback with over 500 transactions, so I've not had many issues with members. I've only left one bad feedback in 8 years, but I'm easy going with members and give them the benefit of the doubt. It would take a lot for me to leave bad feedback, and thus only the one so far.

My biggest complaint with eBay is that sellers can no longer post negative feedback about buyers, or respond to negative or false feedback.
You have to be careful, for sure on eBay, but In general the people I've dealt with on ebay have been honest. I've had over 200 perfect transactions, about half of them as a seller over the last 5 years or so on ebay. But...I had a very bad experience on ebay recently with an abusive buyer who was totally unreasonable. After it was all over, I received a negative feedback filled with false allegations about my honesty. Under the current rules, I see no way to respond to those allegations.
The whole episode has left a very bad taste in my mouth for eBay.

I've been on ebay for 8 years. It's still a good place to buy things. Pretty much sucks if your a seller, you have almost no recourse on anything. And then too most of the real assholes are the music people. I have never had a problem selling cycling stuff or camera stuff or junk around my house.

I've only bought stuff on Ebay & had no problems. But there are other online vendors that sell stuff cheaper than you can get anywhere on Ebay. American Musical Supply, for one has a best price guarantee. And Ebay does take forever to load. I'll shop the Ebay used market but that's about all.

If you view the auction pages for ReliableFender at ebay, you will notice the same bidder is the high bidder on their Fender Deluxe Logo Straps. An account with a (1) for feedback suddenly needs 10 guitar straps and raises the bar immediately after a bid is placed.

These are only 3 examples of them shill bidding. Just a warning that if you purchase from them, you might not be getting the best price possible.
I would hope that ebay would do something to rectify the matter.
PS: and I like ebay.

I have 100% feedback with over 40 transactions. It is a mess now for sellers, I agree. I was planning on selling off a lot of stuff on Ebay after I retire ,before moving, but the unfair treatment towards sellers has ruined that idea. As a buyer, remember after all of the sellers are scared away there may be nothing left to buy at Ebay anymore. I'm now dealing with places like TigerDirect DIRECTLY now.

don't worry, craigslist (affiliated with eBay) will soon be charging for listings, sales etc.

my friend bought a 1965 martin for $4000, he thought it was a good deal until he got it. the head stock was snapped off, the back had a hole in it, and most of the tuning pegs were gone. that's why i personally believe in only buying guitars from local guitar shops or craigslist.

I've bought 2 guitars and about 8 pedals off of Ebay and so far I have not been screwed yet. Selling on Ebay is not very attractive which is why I always ask questions about what I'm buying. Buyer beware right?
Unless the seller has totally F'ed up I will not leave bad feedback simply because the seller can't respond.
All in all I like the Bay.

Yeah ebay sucks for buyers, sometimes buyers ask me to give them a better deal off ebay and only through paypal and I say YES.
I also sometimes get better deals off ebay stores I just ask them to to give me a discount and they almost always do. I got a monitor for 250 they were selling it for 285 with buy it now on ebay I paid them only through paypal.
If Craigslist starts charging Im gonna be SO pissed!

well i mean i've never been screwed on anything, whether it be tickets or shirts or cds, but i would never buy a guitar off ebay. i just don't trust spending the much money, and having that much trust in something that i've never seen before. craigslist is the way to go.

I hate waiting for paypal to pay me for the items I have sold. Right now they are holding a thousand dollars until I get a positive rating or 21 days. UPS shows all items delivered. I have an amp I really would like to purchase that is going to have to wait until I get paid.

Maybe. But THEN, billslist or somesuch will pop up and be "free" to list. People don't like to pay for things. There is an entire forum here dedicated to this fact. Sad, but true.
Also, Ebay DOES suck. I definately see into what they are trying to accomplish. Get rid of the little guy. Powersellers ONLY FTMFW.

Yep. Having a few million dollars to play with for 3 weeks can make you a lot of money.

"Little guys" are sometimes untrustworthy. It's easy to post a picture of a brand new Gibson Les Paul on a post, even when the product they have is a beat to shit chinese fake. At least with powersellers you get a bit of reassurance for what you're buying, whether it be more expensive or not. In my opinion, craigslist is the all around best choice. You can see and play what you're buying, plus people will give you deals and you'll actually be able to communicate with people directly.

Another advantage to craigslist vs Ebay. When you sell on Ebay it becomes taxable income. That's bullshit because quite often you get less than you originally paid. But the IRS doesn't see it that way.

The NEW thread to replace the shocking memo thread...
My buddy used to pull in thousands a month on ebay just trading in specific specialized cameras and golfing equipment. I just had dinner with him Saturday and he has officially left ebay. The reasons are legion, but as a seller it just has grown too many negatives to make it worth it. It started with the inability to rate buyers and went downhill from there.

I'm selling a ton of stuff on Craigslist this week because we are moving. I bought a ton of stuff at garage sales and am now selling it for 8-to-75 times what I paid for it. And it is all C-A-S-H!!!
I see them face to face, they agree to buy it, they give me cash, they take it away, and we're done. I have no reason for ebay.
However, that is because I live in a megalopolis. Once I move to central Kentucky the pickin's on craigslist may be thin...
I will confess that after selling all this stuff on Craigslist and computing what it all cost me at garage sales, It hit me how an industrious fella could make significant "extra" money just buying stuff at garage sales and selling it on Craigslist.

I hope you mean you're selling it for a reasonable price, and you aren't lowballing people.
