View Full Version : Think I shorted my phase 90

I took it apart to mess with the trimpot and think I shorted something when I had the circuit board on the floor while plugged in. It still works but the switch now cuts off the sound at a certain point, and there is a ton more hiss when the effect is engaged. I ended up not even touching the trimpot so it's not that. Is there any way for me to test the circuit and find out what's going wrong? Maybe just a few components got fried and can be replaced? I'm a complete newbie but can solder a bit.

My best advice is build yourself (if you don't already have one) a simple audio signal tester and trace the circuit with it starting at the input until you find the component that is causing it to cut out or where hiss enters the signal. That's the best way to find out what parts to replace.
Yep, that would be the way to do it. Build one of these (http://www.diyguitarist.com/PDF_Files/DIY-AudioTester.pdf). Get hold of a schematic, usually not too tough to find online for free. Hook up an ipod or similar source to the input of your pedal and then, following the schem, go component by component through the signal chain with your audio probe.
I found a tip online a while ago. If you start probing in the middle of the circuit, most of the time you can cut down your debugging time. It's called the rule of halves or something like that. Starting in the middle, you can tell if you need to go forward or backward in the circuit based on whether or not your problem--in your case, hiss and audio dropouts--is present at that point or not.
