Hey folks! I mostly hang out in the bass and live sound forums.

I've been writing lately, and I've made a Myspace page to put my songs put there for critiquing. (http://www.myspace.com/jwolskerocks)

Each song has a blog post, if you don't mind checking them out, let me know what you think!

These are just rough versions with me and my casio, so mix/technical stuff is not anywhere near finalized, and the end result is going to be a whole-band effort of tweaking.

Sorry, can't get past the fx on the vocals and bad acoustic sound.

I feel conflicted about reviewing your music, because it's not my style at all, so I worry that I may be biased.

...but, regardless, I feel like the songs are generic-sounding. I listened to every one on the page and they all sounded too similar to each other and too much like every other classic/southern-rock-revival group I've ever heard.

Also, I agree with the previous post about the vocals. However, despite how the song is recorded, I can tell that you're capable of singing. I think you could easily improve this.

I hope that this doesn't come off overly critical, because your stuff is actually pretty well-executed. It just doesn't strike a chord for me lyrically or musically.

I agree with this. It's not that there is anything significantly wrong with the music, it's just that nothing is really jumping out at me. They're not bad tunes at all, I just think you may need to be a bit more adventurous in trying to sound a little bit different than the masses if you want to stand out. I hope you end up posting more stuff in the future. It seems like you've got talent.

this does not sound good at all. it sounds like any other sound out there. definitely needs some work.

We can see you know how to put a song together. But I agree that this music is just... music. Not a lot of flavor to it, I would probably flip the channel if I heard it on the radio.

Also, some parts sounded "rushed" or unnatural. When you do the recordings, maybe do it in layers, so you can concentrate on either singing or playing.

I look forward to seeing what you can do when you put it together nice.

I think your music right now is a blank pallet, waiting to be painted. Let's see what you do with it.

Cool, thanks!

These are the first mock-ups to get the ideas down.. my drummers name is casio. my guitar is run direct and I didn't really play with it too much.

I put all these tracks together in about an hour a song, that's with everything that is on there (and some had a few tracks that were removed for these rough mixes)

The rushed feelings would be lyrics I'm reading/singing along to the song for maybe the third time ever... I write them and play through them to make sure they fit, but hadn't really become comfortable with them. I actually play these mixes and sing along to the songs, so the next go-around should feel more comfortable...

I'm looking forward to getting these ideas together with my band, where they will certainly shed the generic feeling, my guys will add a nice flavour, I think! I think they are a good starting point, though.

Thanks again for the feedback, I'll let you know when any of the tunes are updated!

Sounds great, man. And at only 1780 miles from Chicago we're practically neighbors. :D
