I am absolutely clueless of how a DJ works. Can someone give me a site that has a good introduction to DJing?
Also, do most DJs use a synthesizer or a drum machine? I notice that many trance artists like Sasha make most of their own sounds, but how do they play them during a live session?

Neither, DJ's usually use two turntables and a mixer. They play vinyl records.

Sasha doesn't make most of his own sounds when DJing, he is using records from other artists. Unlike most DJ's, Sasha does occasionally produce his own songs or collaborates with producers. He released the Xpander EP and is coming out with his first solo album soon. For producing trance/house tracks, producers use a wide variety of tools. Samplers, drum machines, synths, are used to create the sounds. Then the producer takes these sounds and edits them, then arranges them into a song. After it has been sequenced, it is mixed down, usually with Pro Tools to produce the final product. It is a long and taxing process sometimes. But Producing and DJing are very different things, although many artists do both.
