View Full Version : SONAR 1.0 - Will it Work w/Integrated Audio?

I have just installed SONAR 1.0 on my P4 1.5ghz home-built PC (512mb RAM, ATA/100 40gb 7200RPM HD, with a Intel 845WN MTB).

I've gotten nothing but crashes, blue screen of death, freeze ups galore...

The one thing I skimped on w/the home-brewed PC is sound: thinking that I'd research & buy a pro-level sound card at some point, I initially just set it up with the integrated SoundMax digital audio that Intel provides onboard on their motherboard.

Could that be what's crashing me? If so, that begs yet another answer to that "Magic Question:" which sound card in the mid-price semi-pro level range would be good to use with SONAR 1.0?

Thanks.

not sure if that is what is crashing you... maybe maybe not..... other possibilities could be driver problems/confilicts, overheating (get "motherboard monitor 5" software to find out), OS problems (if you're using ME, throw it away.... 98SE is maybe ok, preferred is Windows 2000 or XP)... or many other things could be causing it. PCs are a pain sometimes.

Yes though - do get a soundcard... that integrated stuff is ewwww :D If you need something realllly cheap... soundblaster live -- BUT only because I heard there are some "alternate" drivers made by another group for the SB that can help reduce its latency as low as 8-9ms compared to it's usual many times more than that (but not as good as a pro soundcard of course). The driver's are located at www.kxdev.com .... I have NOT tried them, and I hear you lose many of the card's "consumer" benefits (gaming and stuff - though who cares - you're a musician hehe) - but probably worth checking into if you do go that route. Otherwise, yeah, get a nice soundcard.... right now I'm picking a nice one out myself for my own DAW to replace my soundblaster.

Peace.

oh forgot to answer your other question....

People have been referring "me" to stuff like Echo Mia, M-Audio Audiophile 2496, Delta 44 or 66..... and I'm considering most strongly at the moment the Audiophile with an added small mixing board (possibly a low/mid-range Behringer). Check my other recent post in this forum for details.

Peace.

Yeah -
I already have a Mackie 1202 - the 1st generation, NOT the newer VLZ, but still decent enough... so I'm considering the same setup you describe: the Audiophile seems to have good A/D & D/A converters and all that, yet is under/around 200 bucks? Doesn't have multiple connectors - but that's what the Mackie is for...

The OS is Win98SE - I'm a systems admin. in real life (day job). So it is excruciatingly annoying to deal with the freeze, crash or BSOD symptoms at home! haha The Win98SE was clean install. I was reading a forum on Prorec.com where the guy suggested disable scanners, antivirus, etc. - anything running on the system other thatn the digital audio software itself (and I do have a scanner hooked up (to USB). My crashes will occur when just playing back the Sample Files included with SONAR, though - so I'm really thinking the onboard sound is at the crux of the problem

Thanks for the info.
:D

Keyz316:

"Absolute Cross" is a nice looking site - is that your company?

hehe cool.... I have a similar "real world" job.. so it bugs me too if my home system acts up. Finally I said to myself "thats enough!" and built the best system I could without skimping on anything (though unfortunately I "did" skimp on the graphics card by not getting a new one - its from my previous system.... and it doesnt have well-developed Windows 2000 drivers... it "works" but in gaming and stuff the quality is greatly reduced.... I need a gforce or something - but with so much music gear to get, the graphics get to wait hehe)

Yeah that's my site :D That one is really my "home" site... it does generate significant ad revenue though (not as much as it used to though)... gets 2000-3000 visitors per day. I do have some others as well:
www.TutorialForums.com
www.GetClipartHere.com
www.CrossDesign.net - my business site... needs redesign
I also have www.keyboardplayer.info but I haven't had time to develop it as planned as of yet. I also have www.Photoshop-Tips.com which just forwards over to AC at the moment

Anyhow glad ya liked the site :D
Go for the new pro soundcard - I'm sure it will make a big difference... even if it doesnt stop the source of the crashes, it will still greatly improve your recordings.

Peace.
