They're not talking about it yet. It is a major overhaul. The guitar itself is being designed and built in collaboration with a major LA luthier, and it will be a boutique quality instrument. The modeling technology is enhanced as well.

That's all I will say as I know people at Line 6 and will not betray their confidence.

It won't appear until Summer NAMM. It will 'raise the bar' in the same way the Alchemist amps did.

Suhr is not the builder.

Supposedly Adrian Belew was using a new signature Parker guitar at NAMM that includes Variax capability as well as piezo/13 pin guitar to midi output. Does anyone know if this is a cooperative agreement between Line 6 and Parker to release this guitar to the public soon?

Line6 should make retrofit Variax kits that will fit inside your stratocaster or les paul, as they are the most popular guitars. Then you can play YOUR guitar. I'd probably buy a new/used MIM if the Variax retrofit kit was not too expensive. If they are working with an LA builder, it sounds like it will be expensive. Do you know if they are designing in the USA and are going to manufacture overseas, to keep the cost reasonable?

I too cannot betray any confidences, but I was given the following quote for the record from Marcus Ryle when I asked if they were dropping the Variax: "We are not dropping the Variax guitar." He then gave a smile that said a lot more than that statement :)

Hi,

I was there when Marcus said that and that smile was promising.

Later on I heard a few things after being sworn to secrecy that made me postpone a few purchases in order to have the funds ready when it hits the market. Just in case.

You can buy them, but they are insanely expensive:

I absolutely love my Variax 700. I've just recently realised how much again. I had a project doing theme music and around a dozen incidental pieces for a video game, and the Variax is all over it. Big Les Paul solo blowing all over the theme music, the sitar sound, 6 and 12 string acoustic sounds, the banjo sound, and also I discovered the merits of the telecaster sounds, which I've not really used much before, but are awesome. Got some great Keith Richards rhythm tones out of it.

I also bagged a Variax bass, and used that quite a lot on this project. The upright bass sound wouldn't fool anyone solo, but in a mix it works great. And the McCartney violin bass sound is an absolute joy.

Recorded all that using the XT Live, with the Bass expansion added. Line 6 stuff is generally awesome, but once you start working with a few of their products as an integrated system, it gets seriously mind boggling.

So I'm really looking forward to a Variax 2. I'll only actually buy one a year or two after release when the price gets sensible, but a new one coming out is bound to cause a price drop on the current ones, and I'll buy a second 700 as soon as that happens. :)

It would probably be easier to use one of these:

The gr20 doesnt do anything that the variax does, two completely different beasts. Now if you showed a pic of the vg99.... thats another story.

Yeah the VG99 is basically a Variax and a POD in 1 box...

Oh and the Belew Parker has like.. Every single thing you can have on a freaking guitar, it's so wacky! :cop:

Only if that particular variax modelled not one but two guitars simultaneously, plus having such features as HRM synthesis, midi conversion, true USB audio/interface stability, complete midi implementation and control, d-beam controller, ribbon controller, completely customizable effects chains, and a much more robust alternate tuning dsp engine (ie altered tunings on 12 string and sitar models).
