Tech 21 NYC's Boost D.L.A. pedal. It's perfect for the gigging guitarist who wants a delay and solo boost in one stompbox. I've been a loyal Boss DD-2 and DD-3 user since `91, but the Boost has now taken up residence in my live rig.

For me, #1 is the carbon copy. inexpensive, sounds great.
#2 is the Vai Jemini. Lots of hate for it on the forums due to some strange reasons (ie, not related to tone, the colour, the price, the fact its endorsed by Vai, etc) but it is a really cool OD/dist pedal.

^ werd!...I looked at EVERYTHING hoping to find the features the D.L.A. has in one pedal...none exist- it has it all- great delay, tone to darken the repeats, tape flutter and the most important (imo), BOOST to kick it out there for soloing-

+1 pitchblack is great.
Also the Blackstar HT line is excellent - the HT-Dual versatile tones, good buffered bypass, and separate speaker emulated line out.

I would like to add a +1 for the Carbon Copy as well...
...and I would like a -1 for the Line 6 M13...That was the biggest disappointment I've spent money on all year...

For a single stompbox, I would say a Keeley Fuzz Head. If you couple it with a good distortion/overdrive pedal, it will really sing...forever. I'm testing the Holy Fire by Creation Audio Labs for that spot.
For a on the floor multieffector, I was pretty impressed with the BOSS GT-10. I haven't even gotten through all the amps, models and effects, (its got something like 400 presets). Very handy for recording when you need to quickly dial in a certain "flava" for your tone. I posted my own list of Best Guitar Gear for 2009 below so check it out.

Others that I acquired this year but that are not strictly new : Fulltone SupaTrem, Pigtronix EP-1. Both are terrific pedals.

I'll say the RC Booster Scott Henderson Signature Edition is fabulous. I used one for our New Year's Eve gig and it's the best pedal I bought in 2008. Killer.

I love the line6 M13.
I like (and own) a Line 6 M-13 but I have to say, it's still not perfect.
To be frank, while there were some cool effects products that sound pretty great, none of them were flawlessly executed whether it was overall performance issues, poor to mediocre build quality, less than ideal layout, clunky MIDI implementation for multi-effects units (or lack of MIDI), lack of common sense features, etc.
For example, the Digitech GSP-1101 was a nice offering with great sound, a nice, simple software editor, reasonably solid build etc. but they neglected to put a rear panel input on the unit. It's got a front panel input, which is great and all, but my setup needs to have a rear panel input or it's no go. I ended up returning it. ALL guitar rack gear should have a front AND rear panel input.
Also, there is only one modulation effects bank on the GSP-1101. There's a lot of effects to choose from but you can only run one of them at a time. I want two banks.
Boss understands this, which is why I went with the Boss GT-Pro instead. I would have preferred the Digitech GSP-1101 for tone and it's single space format, but the GT-Pro won out because it had both front AND rear panel inputs, the ability to run two different modulation/pitch shifting effects as well as a separate chorus module.
And don't get me started on the M-13. I love the effects and the ability to run multiple versions of the same effect type as well as the overall layout, but it's build quality is mostly crap (it looks more solid at a glance than it really is...just open it up and take a look inside and you'll get the real story), the knobs are just begging to be sheared off by a stray beer bottle or obnoxious/drunk stage diver (how 'bout sturdier knobs and a metal knob guard on the audience side and not just on the player side), crappy MIDI implementation, an effects loop that isn't on/off switchable, etc.
Or the new Digitech RP-1000. Great concept, but only one loop for external pedals. This could be resolved by putting something like an Axess 4 pedal MIDI loop switcher in the loop and switching it as part of a preset on the RP-1000 via MIDI...but wait...there's no MIDI.
I could go on about other units and their shortcomings, but you get the idea.
Seriously I can't think of a single effects unit (pedal, rack or desktop) that didn't leave me saying, "This would be perfect if it just had/did/didn't..."
2008 was the year of endless misses in the effects world. :o

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one.
I think the M13 is hands-down the best guitar fx unit to come out in 2008.

I think the M13 is hands-down the best guitar fx unit to come out in 2008.
Probably...but it's still far from perfect...especially if your a semi-pro to pro level user. They're just not that solidly built and the MIDI implementation is crap. The sounds are cool, the interface is very intuitive and the redundant effects capability is a feature that has been long overdue, but all that doesn't matter much if the unit ends up failing on you. They tout the unit as being particularly sturdy, but open it up and look at the switches...it's a big tough looking metal switch that presses a cheap, tiny plastic switch that's soldered directly to the PC board. And you don't have to open the unit up to see how flimsy the encoder knobs are...it's just not going to hold up to years of serious gigging and touring.
I've had so many Line6 products fail on me over the years that I was reluctant to even buy my M-13. I'll use it for the studio and the occasional jam session or one off show, but I'd never come to rely on it in a gigging or touring situation. It's just not capable of surviving that kind of punishment. I'd have to carry 4 of them on the road just to feel that I had an appropriate level of backup where normally I might only keep one extra backup of something I used that much...like a Boss GT-10 or Digitech RP-500. Sure, the effects don't sound as cool, but I know that they'll take a beating and still work. :o

There's several contenders, but I'm going to mention a personal favorite that I have not seen anyone mention yet:
Subdecay Prometheus.
If you need a filter pedal, this one's a killer.

Danelectro Cool Cat Series - Cheap, high quality good sounding pedals
Hard to pick a single best of the line winner (although the Vibe is a personal favorite), but if there was an award for the best new line / series of pedals released this year, the Cool Cats would definitely be in the running IMO.
Other than the Digitech Hardwire series, I don't think any other company has released a new series of pedals this year that could even be considered for the honor.
the Superdelay is pretty awesome, although I sold mine. Probably would of kept it if the Timefactor hadn't existed.

I own the fuzz, but there are a lot of wiiners in this series. I hope at NAMM this year they have expanded this series. I'd love a flange and a phaser.

The MXR Carbon Copy is by far the most natural sounding delay out there, with the addition of a built in modulator it can create everything from a smooth slap back, or room, to a pulsating psychedelic echo chamber. Before this I would say the Memory Man was the best echo out there but this is now the number one pedal on my board. Like all MXR gear its simple and does the job right every time, no fiddling. Great work MXR, I think this is going to be a classic!

I agree, but only if you have humbuckers. To my ears, without adding an EQ pedal it doesn't sound full enough with single coils.

I have the digitech hardwire tube overdrive. That is a well built pedal:thu: Nothing I own is sturdier feeling. I also got the Cool Cat Fuzz, very nice (but butt ugly-what's with those stickers?) and the Carbon Copy this year. I understand the Carbon Copy is the fastest selling pedal in MXRs history and deservedly so. They are all worthy contenders when considered for what they purport to be budget vs professional quality etc.
Bottom line....I was just blown away by the quality and sound of the digitech hardwire. The way the knobs move, the detailing, the weight, the sound options. I think they truly got these pedals right. I would have no fear of ever gigging live with them. Excellent product and good value.

Not sure when it was actually released, but the coolest stomp I bought last year was the EHX Memory Man w/ Hazarai.
Visual Sound's Jeckyl & Hyde V2 clocks in at a close second place.
Another +1 for the PitchBlack, btw.

I must be psychic. I got a gift certificate for Christmas from work to the local music store so I went in and picked up an MXR Carbon Copy and Vox Satchurator. I've been very pleased with the carbon copy. I agree the satchurator does not sound as good with single coils. It seems best fit for lead work and less useful for rhythm. Go figure. I wax and wane between loving it and thinking it's just OK. Anyone else have opinions on it?
