I agree 100% about the Zoom H2, especially in terms of bang for the buck.
For the smallest, slickest one with the longest battery life, though, I'd have to go with the Yamaha Pocketrak 2G.

I have a BOSS BR1200CD I didn't want to involve a laptop so this digital recorder offers onboard recording, mastering and burning CD's.
It's been great but I think you'll definitely need a gigbag for it because it is not very portable otherwise. You can see pictures of it at my BLOG linked below.

Would be nice to find a portable hard disk recorder that had quiet preamps but also at a reasonable cost.

+1 Great performing and features; steal for the price. Got one for Christmas. $179 including nice silicone form-fitting shock cover!
