Hands down I would have to say Audio-Technica's AT4047/SV large diaphrapm, side address condenser mic. It has amazing pic up and clarity and is NOT made in China.
The price is completely reasonable too, under $600 street price. It even comes with a matching shock mount and velvet dust cover. Quality Japanese mics like this generally cost a LOT but are worth it for serious recording projects. Check out some photos of this mic in the left hand column of my BLOG page linked below. Its beautiful for sound and looks!

I'm not positive if it was released this year or last year, but I've been extremely impressed with the Groove Tubes Velo series ribbon microphones.

For 2008 it has to be the Golden Age active ribbon mk3. It's just stunning value for money and really means there's no excuse for not having at least one ribbon mic. Solo Artist is actually right though in that if you want a large diaphragm condenser mic the SV4047 is supreme.

I was skeptical at first but I have to say that the Neumann D-01 digital microphone is very impressive. I've tested it on vocals and guitars against Neumann's own U-87 40th anniversary edition and TLM-193 with good preamps (Focusrite ISA430, SSL X-Logic and TubeTech) that I know well and, compared to any other config, it's incredibly more punchy, transparent and open. I couldn't believe my ears. IMO, it's really a technological advance against the traditional mic-preamp-AD converter chain.

You're right. The picture looks good - Japanese mics - China mics, whichever, the mics life depends upon the "beholder". But I'm convinced on what you said though:thu:.
