Soft drums, synths, samplers, whatever.

Spectrasonics' Omnisphere gets major props for being really comprehensive and sounding good.

I'd also give high marks to Heavocity's Evolve. It's all you need to do really great soundtracks and dramatic sounds, and it's not even that expensive.

I think it was released too long ago to really qualify, but the one fairly recent VI that has impressed me the most is Digidesign / AIR's Velvet. It's really the only VI I've ever played that knocked me out so completely. It's an astonishingly convincing EP VI, and it is incredibly playable and musical. It's just a blast to play it.

I'm not sure if this totally qualifies, but the Arturia Analog factory seems like a lot of innovation for simply a midi controller.

I haven't tried Omnisphere yet, so I can't comment on that.

The ones for me were:
1) Camel Audio's Alchemy. As simple or as deep as you want, with a great resynth engine.
2) FAW Circle- however, this is more due to the potential there than how it actually stands at the present. The CPU optimization needs lots of work still.

Honorable mention goes to NI and the Kore Player/Korepacks concept.

Phil - have you heard Scarbee's EPs? I have those (PC user here) and I can hardly imagine something better.....
