Honestly, I can't see why it was created in the first place. This seems to be the ill-conceived idea of some marketing "genius"...

neither can i, and neither can i understand why the hell its still up here, taking up space. it just makes me dislike PRS a lot more, for the sheer fact that there are other builders doing better things, with less promotion.
thank you, GC/Musicians Friend, for plugging PRS up our asses, when we already have the music scene of the late 90's and Guitar World magazine to follow the same function.

O.P.: PRS makes nice guitars (a bit pricey tho) IMHO. But, while many here may hate them with a passion, what's wrong with the sponsor of this site, HC trying to make a little money?
What did you pay to post here?
You're not paying for the running of this forum, HC is.
If you don't like advertising associated with HC forums, go buy them out and YOU pay the money to run it.

Considering the "resounding" success of this forum, I think the whole project kind of backfired.

I would be the first to say that a lot of advertising money is wasted money.
Is it a good idea for PRS to have their own forum inside an expansive group of forums like HC instead of their own? Well, if it sells a few more of their guitars, then maybe.

If they changed the forum title to "Snorkledicks Anonymous," traffic would shut the place down.

It wasn't paid advertising. Musician's Friend had nothing to do with it. And if Fender or Gibson opened up their doors to us, we'd go there.
The Factory Tour thread in this forum has close to 5,000 page views, and the other main thread has over 1,500. Just because some people insist on seeing evil motives doesn't reduce the interest of the people who've enjoyed a look into how these guitars are made. Besides, I already commented on this in the main thread:
"Any kind of media likes exclusives. PRS is a big name in the industry, we got an exclusive look, we're going to do something with it. Besides, these "topical" forums don't last forever, any more than the NAMM or AES discussion forums last forever...they're of the moment, they're interesting, people look at 'em, we move on. That's why we have the section for Archived forums: The material is still available, but doesn't interrupt the regular flow.
The factory tour thread has well over 3,400 page views, so obviously, a lot of people are digging it. This complements the video factory tours over in the Theater...we have a ton of them, and they get a lot of downloads. If there's one thing we've learned by scrutinzing the site stats, it's that people like trade show, artist, and factory tour videos.
I can also guarantee you that if the factory tour thread here had gotten 100 page views instead of thousands, it would already have been archived We go with the flow...we used to have four international forums, but only the Spanish one took off, so we kept that are deleted the rest.
When page views for the factory tour start falling off, this forum will make the short trip to archive-land. Fair enough?"
Last week we discussed whether it was time to archive this but we felt there were still enough new page views to keep it up another week or two. Note that in the last three weeks, the factory tour thread got approximately 1,400 page views.
And there's no law that says forums have to stay up forever or deal with timeless topics. The Pro Reviews have been extremely successul and so have the Trade Show forums. They get archived eventually.
I realize that my sitting there holding a gun to your head saying "You must click on this and watch the factory tour over and over" may be disconcerting, though, so I'll stop doing that :)

Thanks, but there's been other respected members voice their opposite opinion as to this forum's existence, you have made your decision....it's good to be king. I guess PRS is lucky to have such a fan.
BTW- I don't understand why a company has to "invite you in" to get a forum.

...because I believe they have ascribed base motives where there are none. IF it was about a company instead of an event, IF our going there had been paid for (BTW HC paid for Jon to cover this), IF we were paid to put it up, IF there had been pressure from HC or MF, or IF this wasn't a temporary forum, I would be the first to agree and would have taken it down as soon as Jon put it up.
You have made your decision....it's good to be king.
It's good to be the king, but it's better to watch the page view counter - that's what made the decision. I see no need to remove something because a few people have a problem with it when thousands of others are enjoying it. If vocal minorities ruled, there would be no forums left except DIY and maybe Woodwinds and Brass...they're the only ones where I don't recall receiving any complaints.
I guess PRS is lucky to have such a fan.
First of all, I didn't open this forum, Jon did...I just happen to agree with his reasoning. But in the spirit of full disclosure, I own two PRS guitars (that I paid for) and I think they are exceptionally fine guitars...but I also play and use guitars from Gibson, Fender, Guild, Rickenbacker, Becvar, Peavey, Ibanez, and Dan Armstrong. In fact, I just came back from Germany after helping put together templates with Ableton and Native Instruments for the software that's going to ship with Gibson's Dark Fire guitar, and I use Gibson's Digital Guitar on stage in my band EV2, which consists of me and Brian Hardgroove from Public Enemy. I'm a fan of many products from many companies. And many types of music, too.
BTW- I don't understand why a company has to "invite you in" to get a forum.
I can tell you don't understand it, so one more time...
* This forum covers an EVENT, not a COMPANY. If Gibson had done an "Experience Gibson 2008" open house, we would have covered that and this would be an "Experience Gibson 2008" forum. Does that make it a Gibson forum? Of course not.
* This is a TEMPORARY forum, like Pro Reviews and Trade Show Discussions. No matter how many page views it gets, it won't make it past the end of December because it's an event from 2008.
* As long as thousands of people click on it, enjoy it, and check it out, it seems counter-productive to remove it because a few people have a problem.
* We like to try different things and see how people react. In this case, some people didn't like the concept, most people did. But that gives us useful data. Maybe it would be best to have a "Temporary Forum" section for things like this, trade show discussions, the Ray Luzier event that's happening in the drum forum, and the like; maybe that way people wouldn't misinterpret what the forum's about.
In any event, just don't click on it if you don't like it. One day you'll wake up and find it's been moved to the Archived Forums area, and then balance will have been restored in the universe. :)

The one thing HC promised me when I signed on as Editor in Chief was editorial control, and they've kept their word 100%. Now, this doesn't always mean that they or the community are going to agree with how I exert that control, but at least it's me doing it and not the parent company.
I actually like the fact that you all feel this degree of ownership in the site and care about it this much. That's why I take the time to explain what's going on instead of just saying "Take it or leave it." This IS a community, and I'm accountable to the community as well as the owners.
I have reasons for what I do and while I can't guarantee they're always right, I love this place and I'm doing my best to expand its scope while retaining what made it great in the first place. It's a balancing act...but isn't everything?
Thanks for the input.

If you don't like PRS guitars, why enter the forum?
If you are offended by the inclusion of a forum discussing an open house at a major guitar manufacturer (something the other major manufacturers have not done), then don't read it. Save the analysis of your inferiority complex with your shrink.
Is this all people have to do? Really?
