You'e thinking of Lar$ and he not only started out that way, but reverted to it for a few years not to long ago.

I think most drummers start out that way. I used to beat on everything in site until my parents bought me a real kit when I was 8. They've always been SO supportive of my playing and career. I can't believe they put up with all of my racket growing up, I played just about everyday and my bedroom was above theirs! They used to drag me around to high school marching band, jazz, concert band rehearsals. And then I started a rock band way before I had a license and they would take me to shows and rehearsals and NEVER complained once! I have the best parents in the world...they're AWESOME :)

It's refreshing to hear someone speak of their parents that way.

i still play on my mom's pots and pans.

actually i used to play on books, they were always quieter. use the 8" book for the 8" tom, 10" book for the 10" tom, larger books for the floor toms etc. when i got my first kit in 5th grade, i spent over an hour setting it up, then realized i didn't have any sticks. as eager as i was to play on it, i ended up using the cardboard stick part of a wire hanger.. they lasted for a whole 30 mins til one of them gave out on me ha ha. :poke:
