As in...do you get really involved in the recording process, or would you rather just play and let them take care of everything...or somewhere in between? Do have a preference for how your drums are miked? Any insights would be appreciated.

Yeah... I'm pretty involved in the recording process from the start, although I like to let the engineers so their thing first. Most of the studios I work at have top notch people working there in Los Angeles.
I always try to make sure that my drums are in tune and bring plenty of variety of them to the session. Sometimes, I'm fortunate enough to have a drum tech to tune so I can focus more on the tunes.
I love the recording process and I'm always asking a ton of questions about why a mic is in a specific area or a certain distance from a drum. But you have to be a pro and know when to back off or know when you're being a pest! It's funny though, everyone has a different opinion of how they do things... and everyone thinks that their way is the only way!
I have a small studio at my house and I actually engineered my side band's first cd called Hideous Sun Demons on a Roland VS 2480. You can check out some tunes on: myspace.com/hideoussundemons
