This is a reprise of one of our first collaborations, something we did almost two years ago when we first met on HC.

Casper on electric, me on everything else. You will shit when you hear what Casper does this time, a little Bensoning fo yo asses. Thanks for listening.

*Updated as per Thamiam, Wayrockin, Old Geezer's feedback.

Lyrics:

You get the car,
I'll bring the pain.
It isn't far.
Its just the way of the world.

God knows, you got the blues.
Even mama's given up on you,
She gotten used to it.
Its just the way of the world.

A line of cars.
Still in the rain.
Like camera paused
Dye in my veins.

God knows, you got the blues.
Even mama's given up on you,
She gotten used to it.
Its just the way of the world.

Very very nice.

The vocal effects are a little odd, make me kinda uncomfortable. But the song is really well crafted, and that harmonica blends so nice with that electric guitar.

Great effort, fellas!

Thankee kindly, Tham. I appreciate it. I'm just getting into the harp, I'm just blown away by how great it sounds recorded, really cuts through anything.

On the vocal effects, can you be more specific? Too much verb on the backup vocals? Something about the lead vocal? I'd like to fix it.

Really good tune! I like the lyrics and love the chord progression. The peaceful feeling of the chords works to underscore the " everything's wrong but it's alright" message of the words. Bravo!

The harp over those verse chords with the congas in the background reminds me of 60's music like The Rascals. Very cool.

Mix-wise, all the instruments sound good; I'd just spread them out a little more. Everything seems to be panned in a fairly narrow range, say between 11 and 1 o'clock, except for maybe the harp. Kind of sounds a little crowded in spots.

Good stuff, guys!

My kind of music Doc and Casper. The mood of the song is great. Nice production and playing.
The chorusing as you go into "Its just the way of the world" is just a little confusing as to timing.
I wish I could do as well though.

After listening to it closer Doc, the timing I was speaking of is a matter of the effect you were using on the backing vocals. They may be a little wet, causing them to seem a little out of sync.

Damn, I feel shitty saying anything about it. It's a great song and I definitely couldn't do as good a job.

Thanks, fellas. Yall got some good ears. Way, your points on the spread were right on, you handsome polecat. I updated the mp3 with it spread out, I think its a real improvement. I went with the original ending, before I chickened out to a fade.

Geezer, your right about those vox, I hear it now, thats probably what Tham is talking about, too. I'll fix them for the next mix.

Doc Wilson

No, no, Geezer, don't feel shitty, I love for someone putting some real ears to it and helping me make it better. Rock on, you old hoss thief.

Great song and performances, guys! I do have a comment about the engineering, though. The panning is way too precise. I like the idea of having it sound like the acoustic guitar is on the other side of the stage from the electric, but in real life it wouldn't be that clear cut, much of the sound from each instrument would bleed into the middle. I think something like L46 and R46 would have sounded more natural than L64 and R64 (that sounds like what you were doing, excuse me if it wasn't). Am I making sense? Excuse me if I am not. :)

Doc Wilson
01-14-2003, 07:21 AM
It does make sense, Nervey. At first I had them in too tight, and in response to feedback from Way I spread them out to about r44, L45. What I think I need to do is clone the acoustic guitar track and set the clone lower in the mix and to the right so It doesn't sound so stark on the left. Capish?

Really laid back groove, nice! What was the problem with the original vox? Whatever you did, Doc, they sound fine now.

Thanks for music!

PS- casper, I hate you ;)

Mmmmmmmm, this goes along with Jennifer #1, my favorite Doc and Casp collab.

I'm very impressed with the drums since these are sequenced samples. Not usually a big fan of the mouth harp, but it fit in nice and easy and not glaring at all.

Casp is a bastard. He can rot in hell with his damn talent and his damn precise control of the fretboard. ;)

You da man, doc. Another sweet and easy song to go into my rotation and I think this goes into my Top 3 fav Doc/Casp jams.

Two hairless monkey toe-thumbs up.

why do you hate me? :(

hey, doc didn't mention this, but for those of you who have good systems to listen through, you may be able to make out what sounds like scat singing where the little lead bits come in. it happened by accident, but the result was kind of neat. i had been doing some recording across town and didn't have the trusty old sm57 handy to close mic, so i just set up the condenser back in the room. i was not sure what i wanted to play, so i was humming in a "head voice" what i thought i might want to do as i was playing (a good tool for coming up with stuff) and the mic just caught me in the act. since the humming wasn't out of tune i figured i would send it to doc. the only downside is that this was the first pass at it, and i really believe if i spent more time experimenting i might have come up with something smoother. but that's just "the way of the world" ;)

Doc Wilson
01-14-2003, 07:56 AM
Har, thanks munk. The reason you liked those drums is because they weren't sequenced samples, they are real drums played by a real drummer. My best purchase of '02, a CD full of drum lines expertly played and organized to make it easy to mix and match em.

If you send me a SASE, I'll hook you up.

Casp, I did make a reference to you "bensoning", but I didn't want to give the surprise away.

To me its really neat how your part interacts with the tune. I'm singing these dark, fatalistic yet accepting lyrics and then you come in and its like you are humming a happy yet bittersweet little tune along with me. Fits perfectly, and that breath in your head voice is pure ear candy to me.

Some of your best work yet, brother. Really inspired. You are the one take master.

I'll try to make it out when I take this one home and listen on my headphones. I THOUGHT you were using some room 'verb there. I was thinking how natural the reverb sounded on the electric and you were using the DG stomp or something.

i didn't even think to use the dg stomp munk. my bit is pretty dry on there and doc didn't treat it after the fact either. i used the old flame amp and it has a nice reverb. i am sure i had at least a touch of it coming through. i do wanna try to use the dg stomp sometime for recording though. just to see what it sounds like recorded. doubt i will ever try to use it direct, but ya never know.

Thanks, Doc for the offer. PM me your mailing addy and I'll holla at you.

Casp is also the master of the perfect subtle blend. I guess that's what separates the pros from the noodlers. His part just fits like a glove into the tune without wanking out at you.

I think your part really sounds nice and natural, which seems to be a good match for the song.

The only reason I'd use direct recording is if you're in a situation where you can't be too loud before your neighbors get pissed off at you.

Damn, you call Georgia cold? You should come up to NY sometime this week. The highs aren't even going up to freezing.

Hey, I just thought up a new use for those Kramer six-packs: Fire logs. :D

Really nice vibe, guys!

Doc, your voice is just too cool and the guitar, the harp, etc, is just top notch.

Casper, way to go! That solo just fits right in and it flows real well.

Great job to both of you.

Great tune :) Nice vibe, sweet acoustic tone and Capsper's cool chops top it off. I'd really like to hear ya voice with nothing but a nice verb on it though, maybe a subtle delay. You've gradually been lessening the amount of effects on there since I've been about and, imho, it sounds better each time you do. I dunno whether you just like that effect or whether u arent too confident in yer voice. It sounds good to me mate and suits yer music well :)

hey doc and casper,
i hope you read my other reply. you guys got a sound man!!! i havn't listened with headphones, but thru my alesis monitor ones this sound sounds huge. i think you have a great idea about double tracking the guitar to get a stereo effect from it, a little quieter on one side. could you just pan the channel, and then send it thru your buss straight up at 12 oclock? that should still send it panned but with a distant image of it on the outher chnl. too.? the singing (scatting)along with the solo, i thought sounded very natural. you did a wonderful job guys!! congrats! myles loud :D

thanks for the kind words folks. bear in mind how easy it is to put something down on tunes that doc writes. they kind of work themselves out without much laboring. i wish the old hound dog lived in atlanta. ;)

jack, doc turned me on to one of the tunes you sent him. really cool stuff. i am spending most of my practice time trying to tap into that world. dunno how i could have been so ignorant to what is happening in that genre. just awesome stuff.

Thanks casper. That stuff I sent to Doc was my attempt to do something a little bit different. I'm not sure which one you heard but the two songs I sent to the Doctor were my first two forays into the world of computer recording.

You guys are talking about cold, I went out this morning with my hair a little wet and by the time I completed my 7 block walk to the subway my hair was frozen. It was a balmy 5 degrees above zero on my way in.
