Or at least get rid of all the SPAM threads. :cop:

I've deleted over 30 of them just today. Think how bad this place would be if I didn't stop by at least 3 times a day to check for spam...I can't be on here 24/7. For example, I also spent from 9AM to 5Pm editing nine AES videos (which are now in the Theater, so check 'em out!).
I greatly appreciate those who are reporting posts as that makes it easier to find the spam threads. At this point, I don't even ban the spambots...they do one post then disappear. I just delete the threads they start. If they have more than one post, I delete the other ones as well.
And don't forget this is going on in other forums as well...if it was just happening in one forum, I could handle it.

I must say I don't envy you the moderator job, I would have banned everyone by now and be sitting here talking to myself.

OK. Sorry. I'll start reporting them.
I don't like to report anything. But I'll start doing it with SPAM threads.

Thanks. I just signed on for the first time today, and deleted three spam threads. I'm sure there will be more...
BTW when it comes to humans vs. bots, the humans will always lose. BUT as we look at how to upgrade the forums, we are looking at ways to fight bots with bots - e.g., the ability to spot spam based on things like weird characters, non-parseable sentences, excessive numbers of links, etc. In other words, we hope to have the software itself eventually identify, report, and possibly even auto-delete spam. It won't happen tomorrow, but rest assured, we're working on it.

Careful with those, the heuristics can often make the cure worse than the illness. Most of the captcha systems have been broken again, as well

I just zapped a spammer who had been here under five or six user names, but one IP addy.
That IP address is now on the "blocked" list. Probably the equivalent of trying to bail water out of the Titanic with a teacup, but if it makes their life harder, then I can take some personal satisfaction in the payback. ;)
Please keep those "reports" coming folks - it really does help us to deal with the problem.

As always...thanks, Phil, for your exceptional dedication to keeping the spammers at bay. I asked the powers-that-be at HC to put in a budget request for a bigger teacup for you :)

Thanks to the Mods for their dedication.
But could someone please explain the posts that are moved from elsewhere to this forum, which appear to be some sort of spam (current example: "self cert mortage")? Who would move spam?
I click on it to just see what it is and get a message that I'm not authorized to view it.
If there's anything I hate more that spam, it's spam that I'm not authorized to view.

"Moved" means it's been moved from this forum to what we call the "Thread Jail," a secured place (which is why you can't read it) where spam, legally questionable threads, porn bombs, personal attacks, and other unsavory threads dwell. Eventually threads that have been moved either disappear from this forum on their own, or are deleted manually.

In our haste to get rid of it (by moving it to Thread Jail), one of us probably neglected to select the "leave no redirects" option... sorry 'bout that. :o :)

You make it sound like cyberspace hell, which I imagine it is.
No fun being a mod I guess. Thanks for the help, we appreciate it a lot.

Yeah, I hear you. I've only flagged one thread since I joined the forums, and I still can't get that image it contained out of my mind.

I've deleted more than a hundred spam posts from this forum now. It's not too bad when there's a bunch by the same spammer, you just find more posts, click and delete.
Sometimes I ban them and sometimes I don't. Late at night I've experimented to see if once the initial burst is done, if the spammer returns for more. Seems to be the answer is never. :idk:

More so than, say, the Electric Guitar Forum?
If so, it would lend some weight to my theory that having the word "Counterfeit" in the forum's title might somehow draw spammers.

Many times worse than in EG.
However, also easier to find since this forum has light traffic and you can see them from the index page - especially at night.

P.S. Just deleted yet another. :freak:

Maybe also because it is up at the top of the forum lists, makes it an easy target.

Maybe you could put a decoy forum at the top of the list to catch the spam.

I run a few websites and have ran a few message boards that were pretty successful. I shut down all of the spam by in the registering used my own images and they were basic images and it would say "What is this?" and it would be a guitar and they would just have to type in guitar. If you use your own images then there is no way the bots can recognize it. I also made it so if you start a thread you have to type in a 3 randomly generated letters, since most people dont start threads a lot it wasnt a hassle. I shut down all of the spam by doing this and the edits only took me maybe an hour to put in but saved me and my moderators a lot of time.

We're ALL moderating it.
The spammers love this forum, for some reason. And they're very prolific!
As for your question, the ADMINS moderate the moderators. I suppose Craig moderates the admins, MF moderates Craig, GC moderates MF, Bain Investments moderates GC, and Mitt Romney stands atop the mountain overlooking it all. :idk:
