So I just noticed this forum and starting looking through the different threads, and noticed the one about the '08 Les Paul on ebay. One post made mention of getting the serial number and calling the manufacturer.

My question being this: With all the people on Ebay, and craigslist, who are honest and not trying to pull a fast one giving out the serial numbers or posting pictures of them, is it really hard to find a serial number to match whatever fake your trying to pass off? I've always wondered why the sellers didn't reserve that info for the buyers who are more serious about buying the guitar. I know it's hard to tell the difference if someone is determined to get at the info.

A counterfeiter could just as easily go in to a store to get serial numbers.

I don't know if this is pertinent or not but I am a Fender guy.. In looking over some of the stuff on Ebay, I have seen a lot of potential fruads and have even called a seller or two on it.. for example, one can see a seller who has made a guitar from all kind of parts available on ebay, and then call it a legit Fender. How can you tell it is homemade.. Just look at his buying history and see all the items he buys and then what he see what he sells. The problem is, he can call it a 'vintage' instrument because he happens to put a 1994 Neck on a 2005 MiM body.. How can you tell the difference by seeing a few Pics? And with all the 'mods' they put in them on their word, how can you be sure about the legitimacy of it. Example... Can anyone tell me the difference in a Seymore Duncan Pickup and and Mim pickup without the covers?
Just my thought... see ya
