If you sing more than 20 hours a week, every week, you'll sound like you smoke two packs a day without lung cancer. I'm a non-smoker who did that and my speaking voice became a singers speaking voice. When I stopped singing that much, the effect went away. Don't start smoking to get a particular vocal sound. Get a voice coach instead. They're cheaper in the long run.

nahhh not as much as your making out.
what if you could meat your goal in a year or so?.....please allow me to lead the way...
make yourself vomit twice a day. fingers down throat, and puke your life out. at least2 time daily.
you will have a raspy voice forever like...20 yrs of coffe and cigerettes.

Seriously, I had a 2-1/2 pack a day habit and quitting totally ruined my voice. Took all the harmonics and complexity out of it. I was a pretty good rock singer with a nice husky growl and lots of control. After I quit I had to develop a completely different style because I sounded like Davy Jones of the Monkees. It was worth it anyway, because I might not even have vocal cords now if I hadn't given that shit up, but damn.
