HOW WRONG I WAS!

I once played a gig (I told this once before I think)....in my nearest city and put up flyers all over the place.

The only people who came were the friends we'd brought from our town... :o

At teh end of a pretty embarrassing set (there were only about 10 of them) I walked off stage thinking I could at least go and collect my thoughts backstage and let them go and have a few drinks. Unfortunately, I had only managed to walk into a small cupboard where they kept the cleaning supplies.

I toughed it out for about 5 or 10 minutes and when I came out, everyone was just looking at me like the tool I had been, knowing that I had just spent the whole time in a dark sad and lonely place.

We were booked at a small place in LA. The owner didn't promote at all and we played for like 3 people... At the end the lead singer asked to be paid and the owner threw a 20 at him and said get the fuck out.

So I went into the bathroom and pissed all over the cabinets and in some drawers... Why they had a chest of drawers and books in the bathroom Ill never understand... Bad, bad decision on their part.

Moral of the story... If while you were in the closet you had peed on something- it would have come off as cool or funny and not depressingly sad...

I played a wedding where the band was seated at the front of the church. To get a visual perspective of this, you walk into the foyay of the church, which is a reasonably large open area, then you walk through a set of glass doors into the actual church. So we're all sitting (I don't have a strap on my guitar so I can't really get out of my seat and move), and at the end of the wedding we had to keep playing. The only thing was, everyone got up and started walking out of the church while we played, which meant close to 1000 people started litterally walking through the band as we played. So I'm basically shifiting around like an idiot in my chair to avoid people bumping into the headstock on my guitar, while I'm expected to play.

It was one of those, "Why did I sign up for this?" moments.

My band is use to playing at bars and drunken parties. Our bass playing found us a good paying new years gig out of town. The gig turn out to be for kids 0-10 years old. We had a clown open for us and hundreds of poopy diaper kid dancers. It was fun but not what I imagined.

I once played a gig where we all had to wear Mickey Mouse heads, Donaold Duck heads etc. because we found out on arriving at the venue that the audience were all local tax benefit people and we were all on benefit at the time.

We filled in for a band as host of an Open Mic Night. We were told we'd get 30% of the profits on the night. We honestly weren't too concerned about that too much because we looked at it as a practice. It was just another Thursday night in a small bar. No real setlist, just jamming and messing around with some other musicians. At the end of the night, we made our way over to the owner, who was smashed. We asked about our money. He said he didn't think he made much that night and asked us if $50 sounded good. We usually get at least $100 a person but as I said, we weren't too concerned about it. We agreed. He tells the bartender and she hands us $50....total. We had a good laugh at the pain of hauling our shit up there for $12.50 a person. We paid more than that on beer for ourselves! Next time, we'll just play for free beer.

Had a job in a neighboring state. Nice big house, but it must have been a school or firehouse once. BIG bathroom. Lotsa showerheads. Commodes lined up with no dividers, etc. Industrial. Not a homophobe myself, but I have to say the proprieter was a bit flamboyant. Whenever we arrived all business about loading in etc was discussed... While he was in the shower. That means, sans dividers, we were in the same room, the same shower space... uncomfortable to me. I've had hetero business partners who would do business in the bath as well. Don't feel comfy with it yet, but I guess you just go on. Maybe I am unreconstrucibly inhibited on this kind of thing but Man, I don't even talk on the phone when I'm in the bath.

Oh...I just remembered another one. I played at a Christmas party in one of the rougher areas of London as part of a 70s disco covers band. We wore loud shirts and afros. (it wasn't my band... I was depping)...

Anyway, it turns out that just about every person in the audience was black and we looked like the biggest bunch of racist cunts ever. :o

speaking about peeing on shit. i went to a job interview at a grocery store, and they never called me back. the next time i was passing by i decided to use the restroom. their TP dipenser was broke so they had 4 or 5 rolls sitting in a tupperware cake pan looking thing. i just let 'er rip and filled up the bowl. i just feel sorry for the sucker that used the bathroom after me.

First time playing a popular local bar/restaurant, on a patio in the early 90's. Someone else in the band had booked it, we were told X amount of dollars and one free drink a set. The assistant manager came through, and said "Oh no, you guys get free food, free drinks all night, and free pool. That includes the band girls". After telling us this, she went into the back kitchen and quit on the spot. We didn't hear this part of the story until the end of the evening...

We called all the band wifes/girlfriends that weren't already there to have them come by, partied it up, and we owed them $125 when it was all said and done.

I was running sound for a band and there was a gig in a little shithole bar that was about an hour drive away. The band was trying to get $600 and a $50 bar tab. The owner wouldn't go for it but offered $500 and an open bar tab. Big mistake. Our tab at the end of the night was a little over $350. The owner came out at the end of the night and told the bartender the tab was comped, then gave us the pay. About 20 minutes later we hear "WHAT THE FUCK" come loudly from the office. She had finally looked at the tab she comped. LOL. She never did say a word to any of us about it though.
