I don't know. I could go on all day posting botched Smoke on the water videos. I don't know why that song throws so many people for a a loop.

Maybe because it was overplayed to death?

Maybe because it isn't a guitar riff at all, but an organ riff? :)

It's the oddest thing. I know that song by heart on every instrument, if a band wants to do it and they need a __________ (fill in the blank: drummer, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist) I can nail it for them.

But I hadn't played it on guitar in many years. Last year, one of my wife's hot girlfriends asked me to play it on guitar for her. Grabbed my Stratocaster, plugged it into the Marshall.... and promptly screwed it up! lol

Hammond into Marshall. The part is doubled on guitar.

Hammond into Marshall. The part is doubled on guitar.

The opening riff is just guitar, the organ kicks in the third time through when the drums start. Regardless, none of the people in the videos is even remotely close to the right guitar part. Surprisingly few people get the guitar right, organ or not.

I do remember reading somewhere that it was first played by Jon Lord and that the guitar was added later.

Why are people who are obviously just starting lessons, giving them?

While I appreciate you on topic contributions to the fail forum, you may want to listen to it again.
