Recently, we have been playing a few wineries for fun and profit. I like doing them because it is a nice environment and a good fit for our acoustic set of original music.

We got booked into a place we've played before for a well-paying (for us) "member appreciation dinner". When we showed up, the manager had decided to set us up in direct sunlight, even though there was a shady place that would have worked fine. The area she chose also was a high foot traffic area, so we had to contend with people walking through our gear all through set up. So far, not so good.

Finally, the punters arrived (evidently some folks with a lot of coin in their pockets), and sat down to enjoy the dinner. We started to play our set (which has gone over very well at these sorts of events in the past) and after our first tune we heard nothing but crickets. We played for two hours and not a fucking clap was heard. Just 350 people staring at us. Nice.

Highlight of the show for me was a few songs into the set when my cell phone (which I forgot to turn off) starting polling loudly through our PA at the instant I was going into a guitar solo.

What blew me away was how many people came up after the show and said they loved us, including the manager. Interesting way to show it.

The rich are not the same as you and me.

Duly noted. If the rich man claps, tis a bad thing.
