What should I look for in an extension cord? Are the ones built into power strips any good or do I have to buy that separate?

Extension cords with thicker guage wires inside are usually better if you're drawing a lot of power or going long distances. It's worth the $60 at home depot.
Get the power strip separate, and buy what you need (# of outlets, surge protection, etc).
